Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the report, the structural relaxation process of Fe10Ni65B15Si10 amorphous spin glass is described. The ribbon samples were prepared by melt spinning and heat treated using two different annealing processes AP1 and AP2. The techniques employed to investigate structural changes in the three alloy states (AQ (as-quenched), AP1 and AP2 were as follows: transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with X-ray analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and density determination. Differences were detected in the amorphous structures for two states of relaxation in the alloy. The formation of clusters is proposed for one alloy state and the influence of clustering on the early stages of crystallization is discussed. Originator furnished keywords include: Spin glasses, metallic glasses, magnetic clustering, Fe-Ni-B-Si, and electron microscopy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "metallic glasses" is widely used to denote the amorphous alloys obtained by rapid quenching techniques. These materials are characterized by short range atom ordering without translational periodicity of the structure. Kinetic and thermodynamic metastability is one of the main characteristics generally related to metallic glasses, while their thermally induced microstructural transformations could result in deterioration or improvement of the functional properties. Due to their favorable magnetic, electrical, mechanical, and anti-corrosion properties, metallic glasses as new and attractive materials have found application in many areas of modern industries - electronics, construction industry, aerospace industry; as well as chemistry, biomedicine, and surgery.

Book excerpt: This book presents the findings of experimental and theoretical (including first-principles molecular dynamics simulation) studies of nanostructured and nanocomposite metal-based materials, and nanoscale multilayer coatings fabricated by physical or chemical vapor deposition, magnetron sputtering, electrospark alloying, ionic layer absorption, contact melting, and high-current electron beam irradiation. It also discusses novel methods of nanocomposite formation, as well as the structure of the deposited films, coatings and other nanoscale materials, their elemental and phase composition, and their physical–mechanical, tribological, magnetic and electrical properties. Lastly, it explores the influence of a various surface modification methods, such as thermal annealing, pulsed laser modification, and thermomechanical and ultrasonic treatment, as well as different properties of nanostructured films.

Book excerpt: Many macroscopic properties of materials are determined primarily by inhomogeneous structures and textures. These intermediate-scale structures often arise from competing interactions operating on different length scales within the material. Our understanding of such phenomena has increased substantially with the identification and theoretical description of solid-state materials with incommensurate and long-period modulated phases, such as ferroelectrics, charge-density-wave compounds, epitaxial layers and polytypes. Experimental diagnosis of inhomogeneous ground states and metastable phases has advanced so far that these are now well-accepted phenomena. These proceedings bring together the work of physicists and materials scientists to review developments in this area and to examine possible future directions, such as how the microscopic understanding emerging in bench-top solid-state systems can be applied in materials science.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and up-to-date encyclopedia to the fabrication, nature, properties, uses, and history of glass The Encyclopedia of Glass Science, Technology, History, and Culture has been designed to satisfy the needs and curiosity of a broad audience interested in the most varied aspects of material that is as old as the universe. As described in over 100 chapters and illustrated with 1100 figures, the practical importance of glass has increased over the ages since it was first man-made four millennia ago. The old-age glass vessels and window and stained glass now coexist with new high-tech products that include for example optical fibers, thin films, metallic, bioactive and hybrid organic-inorganic glasses, amorphous ices or all-solid-state batteries. In the form of scholarly introductions, the Encyclopedia chapters have been written by 151 noted experts working in 23 countries. They present at a consistent level and in a self-consistent manner these industrial, technological, scientific, historical and cultural aspects. Addressing the most recent fundamental advances in glass science and technology, as well as rapidly developing topics such as extra-terrestrial or biogenic glasses, this important guide: Begins with industrial glassmaking Turns to glass structure and to physical, transport and chemical properties Deals with interactions with light, inorganic glass families and organically related glasses Considers a variety of environmental and energy issues And concludes with a long section on the history of glass as a material from Prehistory to modern glass science The Encyclopedia of Glass Science, Technology, History, and Culture has been written not only for glass scientists and engineers in academia and industry, but also for material scientists as well as for art and industry historians. It represents a must-have, comprehensive guide to the myriad aspects this truly outstanding state of matter.

Book excerpt: The phase of condensed matter known as spin glasses has become a vital and productive area of research. Historically, experiment has suggested unusual effects which have brought the theoretical study of the spin glass problem onto the same footing as the experimental study.; Experiments in the late 1960s on magnetic alloys presented interesting effects which were difficult to explain. It took until the mid 1970s for new developments in condensed matter theory to reveal that a sharp phase transition was at the root of the phenomenon.; John Mydosh tells the story of the spin glasses in a phenome.
