Book excerpt: The scattering of a distinguishable projectile from a nucleus is considered assuming that the underlying interaction Hamiltonian is a sum of two-body potentials. The effective interaction of the projectile with the nucleus in a truncated nuclear model space can be calculated as a linked cluster expansion. The shell-model interaction is required to be an energy-independent, hermitian potential; its expression is terms of the underlying two-body potential is given by folded diagrams. The terms in the expansion of the effective projectile-nucleus interaction must also contain folded diagrams but, unlike the shell-model potential, these are energy dependent in order to describe the singularities associated with the crossing of the scattering thresholds as the projectile energy is varied. Once the effective interaction is known, elastic and inelastic scattering may be evaluated numerically by solving a finite-dimensional coupled-channel equation. 24 refs., 12 figs.

Book excerpt: Nucleon-Nucleon (NN) interaction derived from nuclear realistic potential, is used to study elastic and inelastic electron scattering form factors in light nuclei, where a microscopic theory is employed to include the effects of high configuration outside the 1p-shell model space, which is called core-polarization (cp) effects. Higher energy excitations from 1s-shell core orbits and also from the valence 1p-shell to higher allowed orbits up to 1d5/2 2s1/2 1d3/2 are considered for core-polarization calculations. the outlined theory of elastic and inelastic electron scattering were presented in chapter two. Chapter three of this book devoted to the derivation of the core-polarization effects with higher configuration in the first order perturbation theory and the two-body matrix elements of three part of the realistic interaction: central, spin orbit and strong tensor force, where the two-body matrix elements calculation in harmonic oscillator single-particle basis using Moshinisky transformation. Results, discussions and conclusion are presented in chapter four.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct Nuclear Reactions deals with the theory of direct nuclear reactions, their microscopic aspects, and their effect on the motions of the individual nucleons. The principal results of the theory are described, with emphasis on the approximations involved to understand how well the theory can be expected to hold under specific experimental conditions. Applications to the analysis of experiments are also considered. This book consists of 19 chapters and begins by explaining the difference between direct and compound nuclear reactions. The reader is then introduced to the theory of plane waves, some results of scattering theory, and the phenomenological optical potential. The following chapters focus on form factors and their nuclear structure content; the basis of the optical potential as an effective interaction; reactions such as inelastic single- and two-nucleon transfer reactions; the effect of nuclear correlations; and the role of multiple-step reactions. The theory of inelastic scattering and the relationship between the effective and free interactions are also discussed, along with reactions between heavy ions and the polarizability of nuclear wave functions during a heavy-ion reaction. This monograph will be of interest to nuclear physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date, self-contained account of deep inelastic scattering in high-energy physics, intended for graduate students and physicists new to the subject. It covers the classic results which led to the quark-parton model of hadrons and the establishment of quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong nuclear force, in addition to new vistas in the subject opened up by the electron-proton collider HERA. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions, a key input for physics at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is described in detail. The challenges of the HERA data at 'low x' are described and possible explanations in terms of gluon dynamics and other models outlined. Other chapters cover: jet production at large momentum transfer and the determination of the strong coupling constant, electroweak interactions at very high momentum transfers, the extension of deep inelastic techniques to include hadronic probes, a summary of fully polarised inelastic scattering and the spin structure of the nucleon, and finally a brief account of methods in searching for signals 'beyond the standard model'.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Review articles on three topics of considerable current interest make up the present volume. The first, on A-hypernuclei, was solicited by the editors in order to provide nuclear physicists with a general description of the most recent developments in a field which this audience has largely neglected or, perhaps, viewed as a novelty in which a bizarre nuclear system gave some information about the lambda-nuclear intersection. That view was never valid. The very recent developments reviewed here-particularly those pertaining to hypernuclear excitations and the strangeness exchange reactions-emphasize that this field provides important information about the models and central ideas of nuclear physics. The off-shell behavior of the nucleon-nucleon interaction is a topic which was at first received with some embarrassment, abuse, and neglect, but it has recently gained proper attention in many nuclear problems. Interest was first focused on it in nuclear many-body theory, but it threatened nuclear physicists'comfortable feeling about nonrelativistic potential theory, and many no doubt hoped that it would remain merely an esoteric diversion within the many-body cult. In the editors' opinion, this subject is now emi nently respectable and a review of it indeed timely. The third topic, nuclear charge distributions, is one which almost every nuclear physicist believed had been weIl in hand for some years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop is the fourth of a series initiated in Durham (March 93), followed by Eilat (February 94) and Paris (April 95). The large interest and the great inflow of experimental data, coming mainly from HERA, are some of the reasons behind the decision to have this annual meeting, presently the most important one for this area of research. During the workshop, experimental results and theoretical aspects have been reported on subjects, which have been organised by working groups on: 1) hadron structure functions; 2) photoproduction and photon structure; 3) diffractive interactions; 4) hadronic final states; 5) spin effects in lepton nucleon scattering; 6) special session on theoretical advances. While the contributions to the working groups offer hot material for specialists, the reports by the conveners, as well as other contributions to the plenary sessions, offer to nonspecialists a complete overview of this research field.
