Book Synopsis Micropropulsion Research at AFRL. by :
Download or read book Micropropulsion Research at AFRL. written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increased requirement for microsatellites to support such future missions as formation-flying space-based surveillance, space control, and on-orbit satellite servicing. Devices that can provide precise impulse bits in the 10-micro newton range may be enabling for a new fleet of 25-kg class spacecraft supporting these missions. in response to this need the Air Force Research Laboratory is developing a miniaturized propulsion unit: the Micro-Pulsed Plasma Thruster (Micro-PPT). Like a standard PPT, the Micro-PPT uses a surface discharge across the face of a solid Teflon(TM) propellant to create and accelerate a combination of plasma and neutral vapor. The Micro-PPT substantially differs from the standard design by using a self-igniting discharge and eliminating the separate igniter circuit from the thruster. This simplification enables the order-of-magnitude reductions in the thruster size and operational power level required to meet microsatellite propulsion requirements.

Book Synopsis Development of a Thrust Stand Micro-Balance to Assess Micropropulsion Performance by :
Download or read book Development of a Thrust Stand Micro-Balance to Assess Micropropulsion Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As proposed spacecraft and their associated thrusters have become smaller, technology has been developed to meet the demand for performance measurements for the extremely low force levels produced. For such thrusters, it is also desirable to measure the mass changes resulting from the utilization of propellant associated with either the steady state thrust or transient impulses. A thrust stand and novel data analysis method is presented to make both thrust (or impulse) and mass change measurements concurrently. It is shown that very accurate and repeatable measurements of mass can be made using an existing thrust stand system. Furthermore, it is shown that impulse and mass measurements can be resolved at the same time from a single thrust stand trace.

Book Synopsis AFRL MicroPPT Development for Small Spacecraft Propulsion by :
Download or read book AFRL MicroPPT Development for Small Spacecraft Propulsion written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of miniaturized pulsed plasma thrusters (PPT), known as MicroPPTs, is currently in development at the Air Force Research Laboratory. The MicroPPTs use a surface discharge across solid Teflon(TM) propellant to provide precise impulse bits in the 10 microN-s range. In the near term, these thrusters can provide propulsive attitude control on 150-kg-class spacecraft using 1/5th the dry mass of conventional torque rods and reaction wheels. Eventually these thrusters are designed for primary and attitude control propulsion on future 25-kg class spacecraft envisioned for such missions as formation flying sparse aperture arrays for space-based surveillance, on-orbit satellite servicing, and space control. A synopsis of the status of the thruster is presented, discussing development, lifetime, performance, and environmental testing.
Book Synopsis MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications by : Robert Osiander
Download or read book MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications written by Robert Osiander and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of MEMS for aerospace applications has been germinating for years, and current advances bring the field to the very cusp of fruition. Reliability is chief among the challenges limiting the deployment of MEMS technologies in space, as the requirement of zero failure during the mission is quite stringent for this burgeoning field. MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications provides all the necessary tools to overcome these obstacles and take MEMS from the lab bench to beyond the exosphere. The book begins with an overview of MEMS development and provides several demonstrations of past and current examples of MEMS in space. From this platform, the discussion builds to fabrication technologies; the effect of space environmental factors on MEMS devices; and micro technologies for space systems, instrumentation, communications, thermal control, guidance navigation and control, and propulsion. Subsequent chapters explore factors common to all of the described systems, such as MEMS packaging, handling and contamination control, material selection for specific applications, reliability practices for design and application, and assurance practices. Edited and contributed by an outstanding team of leading experts from industry, academia, and national laboratories, MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications illuminates the path toward qualifying and integrating MEMS devices and instruments into future space missions and developing innovative satellite systems.

Book Synopsis A Proposed On-Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed-Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications by :
Download or read book A Proposed On-Orbit Demonstration of an Advanced Pulsed-Plasma Thruster for Small Satellite Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USAF Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Electric Propulsion Group is developing an Advanced pulsed-plasma thruster (PPT) technology demonstration for small satellites. The initial flight opportunity was on MightySat 11.2 - a satellite bus specifically designed to advance AFRL-developed technologies and serve as a risk reduction mission for systems required for TechSat 21. This experiment will demonstrate a high performance PPT, making it a viable thruster for various applications such as orbit raising and initiating and maintaining clusters of small satellites. The experiment will also be the first flight of a new micro-propulsion thruster - a miniaturized version of the PPT, known as the micro-PPT (%-PPT). The u-PPT is ideal for very precise attitude control and pointing, formation flying, and for primary propulsion on microsatellites. A novel on-board diagnostic package will be used to assess the contamination of optical and thermal control surfaces as a result of firing the PPTs. Ground-based observations will also be conducted to assess the on-orbit performance and possible communication impacts of the thruster firings.
