This book was released on 1980 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microplanktonic ATP-biomass and GTP-productivity were studied in upwelling features off Pt. Sur, California. Biomass, determined by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and chlorophyll a, was found to have a definite preferential location in the strong gradients of temperature and nutrients on the equatorward edge of the feature. Productivity, as sampled using the new method of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) sampling was found to be high throughout the thermo-nutrient gradient associated with an upwelling feature in an early stage of development. The measurement of productivity and 'growth potential' using GTP and GTP/ATP ratios was found to be a valuable tool in examining rapidly changing upwelling features. Preliminary results obtained using the GTP technique suggests a relationship between the flux of nutrients across ocean fronts and planktonic productivity associated with frontogenic coastal upwelling systems. This book was released on 1981 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the distribution and production of micro-organisms within a coastal upwelling front located off Pt. Sur, California. Underway measurements of adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) and pigment fluorescence (principally chlorophyll a) were used to estimate the amount of living biomass present at 2.5 m. Specific and absolute productivity were measured by the nucleotide ratio of guanosine-5'-triphosphate (GTP) to ATP and GTP, respectively. The highest concentration of biomass associated with the highest rate of absolute productivity was preferentially located in the strong thermo-nutrient gradient in the warmer stratified water at the equatorward edge of the feature. The measurement of specific productivity using the GTP to ATP ratio was significantly correlated with assimilation numbers (productivity index), lending support to the hypothesis that this ratio is a good indicator of specific community productivity in microplankton (principally phytoplankton). No correlation existed between the GTP concentration which was enzymatically determined, and the concentration of GTP which was inferred from the calculated values of delta ATP. This finding indicates that delta ATP is not a good estimator of GTP in community assemblages of microplankton.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATO Advanced Research Institutes are designed to explore unre solved problems. By focusing complementary expertise from various disciplines onto one unifying theme, they approach old problems in new ways. In line with this goal of the NATO Science Committee, and with substantial support from the u.s. Office of Naval Research and the Seabed Assessment Program of the U. S. National Science Founda tion, such a Research Institute on the theme of Coastal Upwelling and Its Sediment Record was held september 1-4, 1981, in Vilamoura, Portugal. The theme implies a modification of uniformitarian thinking in earth science. Expectations were directed not so much towards find ing the key to the past as towards exploring the limits of interpret ing the past based on present upwelling oceanography. Coastal up welling and its imprint on sediments are particularly well-suited for such a scientific inquiry. The oceanic processes and conditions characteristic of upwelling are well understood and are a well packaged representation of ocean science that are familiar to geolo gists, just as the magnitude of bioproduction and sedimentation in upwelling regimes --among other biological and geological processes- have made oceanographers realize that the bottom has a feedback role for their models.

Book Synopsis Comparative Protozoology by : Orvil Roger Anderson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protozoa are an eclectic assemblage of organisms encompassing a wide range of single-celled and multiple-celled colonial organisms lacking tissue organiza tion, but exhibiting remarkably refined biological behavior. In some modern classifications, they are classified as a subkingdom among the Protista (eukary otic single-celled organisms). Although they are not considered a formal cate gory by some taxonomists and some biologists consider the name inappropriate (inferring that they are the first unicellular animals, although some photosynthe size), it is still convenient to consider this group of organisms as an informal collection under the heading of protozoa. Their cosmopolitan distribution, sig nificant ecological role in mineral recycling and enhancement of carbon flow through lower trophic levels of food webs, and remarkable cellular adaptations to enhance survival in diverse environments make them significant organisms for biological investigation. In some cases, biologists are introduced to this group in first level courses or in invertebrate zoology, but never develop a full appreciation for the diverse and biologically sophisticated characteristics of these organisms. This book is intended as a survey of broad concepts in protozoan biology with an emphasis on comparative data. The focus is on the zoological aspects of the group. Topics more closely related to plantlike characteristics, as presented in books on phycol ogy, are not considered in detail here. A sound background in modern biology and an introduction to cellular biology will be helpful in understanding Chapters 15 and 16, which include a substantial amount of information on biochemistry.
Book Synopsis Starvation in Bacteria by : S. Kjelleberg
Download or read book Starvation in Bacteria written by S. Kjelleberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerted efforts to study starvation and survival of nondifferentiating vegeta tive heterotrophic bacteria have been made with various degrees of intensity, in different bacteria and contexts, over more than the last 30 years. As with bacterial growth in natural ecosystem conditions, these research efforts have been intermittent, with rather long periods of limited or no production in between. While several important and well-received reviews and proceedings on the topic of this monograph have been published during the last three to four decades, the last few years have seen a marked increase in reviews on starvation survival in non-spore-forming bacteria. This increase reflects a realization that the biology of bacteria in natural conditions is generally not that of logarithmic growth and that we have very limited information on the physiology of the energy-and nutrient-limited phases of the life cyde of the bacterial cello The growing interest in nongrowing bacteria also sterns from the more recent advances on the molecular basis of the starvation-induced nongrowing bacterial cello The identification of starvation-specific gene and protein re sponders in Escherichia coli as weIl as other bacterial species has provided molecular handles for our attempts to decipher the "differentiation-like" responses and programs that nondifferentiating bacteria exhibit on nutrient limited growth arrest. Severallaboratories have contributed greatly to the progress made in life after-log research.
Book Synopsis Respiration in Aquatic Ecosystems by : Paul del Giorgio
Download or read book Respiration in Aquatic Ecosystems written by Paul del Giorgio and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-01-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Respiration represents the major area of ignorance in our understanding of the global carbon cycle. In spite of its obvious ecological and biogeochemical importance, most oceanographic and limnological textbooks invariably deal with respiration only superficially and as an extension of production and other processes. The objective of this book is to fill this gap and to provide the first comprehensive review of respiration in the major aquatic systems of the biosphere. The introductory chapters review the general importance of respiration in aquatic systems, and deal with respiration within four key biological components of aquatic systems: bacteria, algae, heterotrophic protists, and zooplankton. The aim of this first part is to provide the backbone for the analysis and interpretation of ecosystem-level respiration in a variety of aquatic environments. The central chapters of the book review respiration in major aquatic ecosystems including freshwater wetlands, lakes and rivers, estuaries, coastal and open ocean and pelagic ecosystems, as well as respiration in suboxic environments. For each major ecosystem, the corresponding chapter provides a synthesis of methods used to assess respiration, outlines the existing information and data on respiration, discusses its regulation and link to biotic and abiotic factors, and finally provides regional and global estimates of the magnitude of respiration. The final chapter provides a general synthesis of the information and data provided in the different sections, and further attempts to place aquatic respiration within the context of the global carbon budget.

Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
