Book excerpt: The response of a unidirectional SCS-6/Ti-6Al-4V composite is evaluated under a range of isothermal fatigue (IF) and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) conditions. Both processing and thermomechanical test conditions are simulated using a cylinder in cylinder code, FIDEP, which treats the fiber as thermoelastic while the matrix is characterized using a recent version of the Bodner-Partom constitutive law. Computed stresses and strains in the constituents are obtained after 10 cycles of loading and are used as input into a new and simpler version of a life fraction model. Applied stress at temperature and computed matrix strains are used for the time-dependent and matrix fatigue terms in the model, respectively. Cyclic stress-strain behavior of the matrix material is also computed and used, together with fatigue life data, to identify the governing mechanisms and to explain the observed trends in fatigue life as a function of frequency and applied stress level. Comparisons of fatigue behavior with that of SCS-6/Timetal 21S illustrate differences when tested under nominally similar conditions.

Book excerpt: Fatigue life predictions are conducted for a high temperature composite for hypersonic vehicle structural applications. A SCS-6/Timetal® 21S [0/90]s composite is evaluated under thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) as well as under typical hypersonic mission profiles and segments of those missions. The fatigue life analysis is based on micromechanical stresses which, in turn, are input into a damage summation model. Spectrum loading is decomposed into a series of in-phase and out-of-phase TMF segments whose lives are predicted from a life fraction model which was developed for isothermal and TMF data. Analytical predictions for the mission spectrum and the simple mission profiles are compared with experimental data obtained here as well as in a previous study. The model is demonstrated to be able to predict fatigue life under mission spectrum loading based solely on calibration under simple isothermal fatigue and TMF conditions.

Book excerpt: Titanium matrix composites (TMC) are being evaluated as structural materials for elevated temperature applications in future generation hypersonic vehicles. In such applications, TMC components are subjected to complex thermomechanical loading profiles at various elevated temperatures. Therefore, thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) testing, using a simulated mission profile, is essential for evaluation and development of life prediction methodologies. The objective of the research presented in this paper was to evaluate the TMF response of the (0/90)2s SCS-6/Timetal-21S subjected to a generic hypersonic flight profile and its portions with a temperature ranging from -130 C to 816 C. It was found that the composite modulus, prior to rapid degradation, had consistent values for all the profiles tested. A micromechanics based analysis was used to predict the stress-strain response of the laminate and of the constituents in each ply during thermomechanical loading conditions by using only constituent properties as input. The fiber was modeled as elastic with transverse orthotropic and temperature dependent properties. The matrix was modeled using a thermoviscoplastic constitutive relation. In the analysis, the composite modulus degradation was assumed to result from matrix cracking and was modeled by reducing the matrix modulus. Fatigue lives of the composite subjected to the complex generic hypersonic flight profile were well correlated using the predicted stress in 0 degree fibers. Mirdamadi, M. and Johnson, W. S. Book excerpt: Several methodologies have been developed to predict the lives of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) subjected to thermomechanical fatigue (TMF). This paper reviews and compares five life prediction models developed at NASA-LaRC, Wright Laboratories, and Clarkson University. The models developed at NASA-LaRC and Clarkson University are based on a single parameter, the fiber stress in the load-carrying, or 0°, direction. The two other models, both developed at Wright Labs, are multi-parameter models. These can account for long-term damage, which is beyond the scope of the single-parameter models, but this benefit is offset by the additional complexity of the methodologies. Each of the methodologies was used to model data generated at NASA-LeRC, Wright Labs, and Georgia Tech for the SCS-6/Timetal 21-S material system. Viscoply, a micromechanical stress analysis code, was used to determine the constituent stress state for each test and was used for each model to maintain consistency. The predictive capabilities of the models are compared, and the ability of each model to accurately predict the responses of tests dominated by differing damage mechanisms is addressed.

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional finite element program called VISCOPAC was developed and used to conduct a micromechanics analysis of titanium metal matrix composites. The VISCOPAC program uses a modified Eisenberg-Yen thermo-viscoplastic constitutive model to predict matrix behavior under thermomechanical fatigue loading. The analysis incorporated temperature-dependent elastic properties in the fiber and temperature-dependent viscoplastic properties in the matrix. The material model was described and the necessary material constants were determined experimentally. Fiber-matrix interfacial behavior was analyzed using a discrete fiber-matrix model. The thermal residual stresses due to the fabrication cycle were predicted with a failed interface, The failed interface resulted in lower thermal residual stresses in the matrix and fiber. Stresses due to a uniform transverse load were calculated at two temperatures, room temperature and an elevated temperature of 650 C. At both temperatures, a large stress concentration was calculated when the interface had failed. The results indicate the importance of accuracy accounting for fiber-matrix interface failure and the need for a micromechanics-based analytical technique to understand and predict the behavior of titanium metal matrix composites. Book excerpt: Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) data have been generated for a Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn (Ti-15-3) material reinforced with SCS-6 silicon carbide fibers for both in-phase and out-of-phase testing. Significant differences in failure mechanisms and fatigue life are noted for the in-phase and out-of-phase testing. The purpose of the research reported in this paper is to apply a micromechanics model to analysis of the data. The analysis predicts the stresses in the fiber and in the matrix material during the thermal and mechanical cycling by calculating both the thermal and mechanical stresses and their time-dependent behavior. The rate-dependent behavior of the matrix was characterized and was used to calculate the constituent stresses in the composite. The predicted 0° fiber stress range was used to explain the composite failure. It was found that for a given condition, temperature, loading frequency, and time at temperature, the 0° fiber stress range may control the fatigue life of the unidirectional composite.

Book excerpt: Parameters and models to correlate the cycles to failure of a unidirectional metal matrix composite (SCS-6/Timetal 21S) undergoing thermal and mechanical loading are examined. Three different cycle types are considered: out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue (TMF), in-phase TMF, and isothermal fatigue. A single parameter based on either the fiber or matrix behavior is shown not to correlate the cycles to failure of all the data. Two prediction methods are presented that assume that life may be dependent on at least two fatigue damage mechanisms and therefore consist of two terms. The first method, the linear life fraction model, shows that by using the response of the constituents, the life of these different cycle types are better correlated using two simple empirical relationships: one describing the fatigue damage in the matrix and the other fiber-dominated damage. The second method, the dominant damage model, is more complex but additionally brings in the effect of the environment. This latter method improves the predictions of the effects of the maximum temperature, temperature range, and frequency, especially under out-of-phase TMF and isothermal fatigue. The steady-state response of the constituents is determined using a 1-D micromechanics model with viscoplasticity. The residual stresses due to the CTE mismatch between the fiber and matrix during processing are included in the analysis.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several micromechanical models that are currently being used for predicting the thermal and mechanical behavior of a cross-ply, [0/90], titanium matrix composite are evaluated. Six computer programs or methods are compared: (1) VISCOPLY; (2) METCAN; (3) FIDEP, an enhanced concentric cylinder model; (4) LISOL, a modified method of cells approach; (5) an elementary approach where the [90] ply is assumed to have the same properties as the matrix; and (6) a finite element method. Comparisons are made for the thermal residual stresses at room temperature resulting from processing, as well as for stresses and strains in two isothermal and two thermomechanical fatigue test cases. For each case, the laminate response of the models is compared to experimental behavior, while the responses of the constituents are compared among the models. The capability of each model to predict frequency effects, inelastic cyclic strain (hysteresis) behavior, and strain ratchetting with cycling is shown. The basis of formulation for the micromechanical models, the constitutive relationships used for the matrix and fiber, and the modeling technique of the [90] ply are all found to be important factors for determining the accurate behavior of the [0/90] composite.
