Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American Telecommunications: Telefónica's Conquest offers an excellent overview of the political, economic, and social factors in Spain and Latin America that have aided the miraculous transformation of the semi-public Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica. What was once a national telephone company lagging behind its Western European counterparts has evolved into a global telecommunications giant conquering most of the Latin American telecom market. By examining the beginnings of Telefónica as an ITT subsidiary as well as its nationalization under Franco's regime and its later privatization in recent years, this book provides insight into the institutional growth as well as geographical expansion of this company, especially in Latin America where all state-run telecommunications enterprises became privatized throughout the 1990s and many were bought by Telefónica. This book is unique because it brings Telefónica's media integration to the fore, tracing and analyzing its many assets and partnerships, which range from television and film studios to multiplatform media content production and distribution companies. Telefónica's close ties with Endemol, Disney, and Bertelsmann among others are examined in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together experts on Latin American countries, and providing a comprehensive view of what individual countries are doing to build a telecommunications capability, Telecommunications in Latin America addresses the complicated economic and policy issues of each country's telecommunications. The editor and his staff have skillfully integrated the chapters into a coherent volume, keeping the information accessible to non-specialists. Particular attention is paid to telecommunications as a link in the chain of the regional development process and to the privatization process that has swept across the subcontinent. This study will be of interest to students and professionals in the areas of communication, international telecommunications companies, and country governments in Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications in Developing Countries (1990) stresses the importance of modern, micro electronics-based telecommunications for developing economies in providing a basic communications infrastructure for economic and industrial development and the springboard for new information technology activities. Although progress in telecommunications has so far been concentrated in the most advanced regions of the world, some developing countries can bypass older, less efficient forms of telecommunications and go straight to microelectronic technology. This book is the first to examine the challenges and difficulties facing developing countries in this field. extending existing theories of technology transfer and diffusion, Michael Hobday offers an explanation of the forces for change in the telecommunications industry. He then examines Brazil's experience in telecommunications, from developing the technology and building up a modern infrastructure to controlling multinational suppliers of equipment. Dr Hobday explains why Brazil's efforts in this area have succeeded, and offers lessons for other developing countries.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent economic history of Latin America no country has yet found the means to combine effectively economic growth with equity. Unavoidable Industrial Restructuring in Latin America compares the development path of Latin America with that of the East Asian newly industrialized countries (NICs), the United States, and Europe in the 1970s and 1980s to show the national policies and international cooperation necessary to set Latin American countries on the road to healthy economies. Fernando Fajnzylber argues that technological and industrial progress is the driving force of a positive relationship among dynamism, competitiveness, austerity, and equity. Latin America's failure to master this technological progress underlies its economic difficulties. To overcome the inheritance of past mistakes, the author maintains, Latin America must undergo not only macroeconomic stabilization and a reduction of the debt burden, but also a complete transformation of the production structure. The role of the state and the institutional setup need to be modified and new social and sectoral policies devised. Fajnzylber sees this radical restructuring as an unavoidable step if Latin America is ever to achieve a workable balance between growth and equity.
