Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume analyses and discusses the systematisation of Polish socio-economic transformations of the last three decades using selected examples of the most important changes. 1989 marked the onset of the political transformation process in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The transition involved a shift from a socialist system to a parliamentary democracy and from a command economy to a market one. Due to the deep economic crisis that culminated in 1988 and the peaceful model of change developed and implemented in Poland, the magnitude and manner of implementing various initiatives was unprecedented and had specific implications. This transformation opened Polish society and the Polish economy to the impact of global social and economic changes, triggering successive transformations, often overlapping in terms of their causes and consequences. This publication aims to present the course and effects, in particular territorial, of Poland's socio-economic transformation in the years 1990–2020. The analysis covers the key aspects of this transformation, illustrated with references to the concepts and theories of development, domestic and foreign literature, own empirical research and existing or newly developed model approaches to transformation in the territorial dimension. The book appeals to researchers and student in the fields of geography, spatial management, economics and business, sociology and political sciences, public and private economic research institutes, employees of governmental bodies and corporations, consultants in public administration, journalists and policymakers.

Book excerpt: Contains papers from an August 1995 symposium held at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany. Contributors discuss the significance of a microeconomic approach to the transformation process in Eastern Europe from theoretical and empirical perspectives. They demonstrate that modern microeconomics goes fay beyond the neoclassical approach in analyzing the transformation process, explain the need for new institutions, and argue that the state must play a strong role in shaping new institutions. Book excerpt: This book discusses the transition to a market economy, political democracy and civic society in Poland, the central European country which initiated the process of post-communist transformation sixteen years ago and which is now a member of the European Union. Poland is an instructive case in terms of: comparative economics; structural reforms; institutional build up; integration in the world economy; a successful emerging market. For these reasons the book will be a valuable publication which will attract the attention of both researchers and practitioners. The book has been written by an excellent team of researchers with extensive experience of policymaking and comprehensive research output within the field of comparative and development economics and economic policy. It includes macro- and micro-economic analyzes as well as political approaches to the issues under discussion.

Book excerpt: In 1994, the Asia Foundation's Center for Asian Pacific Affairs began a two-year project to compare the transitions of selected East European and Asian economies from centrally-planned communist systems to market economies. The goal was to shed light on the transition process through an understanding of the underlying economic and institutional dynamics. This volume is the culmination of that project. The volume is divided into three parts. In the first part, an overview, the editors review the authors' findings and highlight major themes. The second part looks closely at the transition process in seven Asian and East European economies: China, Vietnam, Mongolia, Russia, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. The third part contains six comparative studies that explore key elements of the transition process. The papers incorporate feedback obtained from meetings with cabinet members and high government officials, conferences, and seminars in Prague, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Beijing, Ulan Bator, and Washington, D.C.
