Book excerpt: Dramatic developments in understanding the fundamental underpinnings of life have provided exciting opportunities to make marine bioproducts an important part of the U.S. economy. Several marine based pharmaceuticals are under active commercial development, ecosystem health is high on the public's list of concerns, and aquaculture is providing an ever greater proportion of the seafood on our tables. Nevertheless, marine biotechnology has not yet caught the public's, or investor's, attention. Two workshops, held in October 1999 and November 2001 at the National Academies, were successful in highlighting new developments and opportunities in environmental and biomedical applications of marine biotechnology, and also in identifying factors that are impeding commercial exploitation of these products. This report includes a synthesis of the 2001 sessions addressing drug discovery and development, applications of genomics and proteomics to marine biotechnology, biomaterials and bioengineering, and public policy and essays contributed by the workshop speakers.

Book excerpt: In 1966 Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act to promote marine research, education, and extension services in institutions along the nation's ocean and Great Lakes coasts. In Maryland a Sea Grant Program -- a partnership among federal and state governments, universities, and industries -- began in 1977, and in 1982 the University of Maryland was named the nation's seventeenth Sea Grant College. The Maryland Sea Grant College focuses its efforts on the Chesapeake Bay, with emphasis on the marine concerns of fisheries, seafood technology, and environmental quality. This report addresses the emerging science and developing technologies encompassed by marine biotechnology. It contains a broad overview of marine biotechnology, sets forth industrial realities, and assesses the future potential of this new field of biotechnology. The report has eight chapters. The first contains a wide range of major scientific achievements in marine biotechnology. The subjects encompassed within marine biotechnology are grouped within six areas: aquaculture, marine animal health, marine natural health, marine natural products, biofilm and bioadhesion in the marine environment, bioremediation, and marine ecology and biological oceanography. The remaining chapters detail an extensive survey and status report on marine biotechnology in the United States, Japan, Australia, and Norway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Past efforts to colonize the environment and domesticate living species, coupled with scientific research, have resulted in the possession (but not always the real control) by humans of any available terrestrial space. However, oceans, which represent up to two thirds of the surface of the planet, had not been really approached until the middle of this century. As oceanographic science develops, the picture of a rich, diverse, complex and also, in many respects, specific marine life, is coming into view. In a broad sense, marine biotechnologies can be understood as the various means or techniques of managing marine living systems for the benefit of mankind. The first goal we have is for marine life to provide biomass for food. However, today it is not certain that a significant increase of total world fisheries' catches will be possible in the future. There are several ways to address this. First, we need to generate better, more complete, or different uses of the biomass actually fished. This is mainly a matter of upgrading fish and fish wastes. Second, we need to artificially grow the living species. This falls within the scope of cell cultivation and of aquaculture. Both approaches have to be appreciated si multaneously in terms of biology, ecology, and economy. In both approaches, profit improvements are linked to the introduction of biotechnological methods and to the use of biotechnological processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as essential reading for research scientists and biotechnologists from both academia and industry working in marine biotechnology and related disciplines. The book discusses recent advances and challenges in terms of science, technology, innovation, and policy for the development of the field; and how marine biotechnology may provide new solutions to some of the grand challenges faced by our society. Written in an accessible language, the book is also recommended as a reference text for decision-makers in government and non-governmental organizations in their efforts to foster the development of a global blue economy. With less than 5 % of the vast and rich marine environment explored, our seas and oceans represent a virtually unexplored resource for the discovery of novel product, processes, and development of bio-inspired synthetic drugs with biotechnological potential. As such, the marine environment has been considered Earth's last frontier of exploration. Recent advances in molecular techniques are providing the necessary tools to access on a larger scale the still-untapped ocean resources and, consequently, unveil the promise of the blue biotechnology. Governments are recognizing the potential of marine biotechnology to provide solutions to some of the Grand Challenges of the 21st Century such as sustainable energy and food sources, identification of novel drugs for improved health treatments, and providing new industrial materials and processes. For this reason, advances in marine biotechnology may foster the much-needed source of innovation and economic growth in many countries, and pave the way towards the development of a global blue economy, i.e. a new economic model based on the sustainable exploration of our ocean ecosystems.

Book excerpt: BACTERIAL ADHESION Molecular and Ecological Diversity Edited byMadilyn Fletcher Over the last twenty years, research has revealed the enormouscomplexity underlying the phenomenon of bacterial adhesion. Theinitial research goal was to understand the mechanism of attachmentand its effects on the bacteria as well as the host. As researchprogressed, however, it became evident that many differentattachment mechanisms exist. These diverse forms of adhesion arethe results of numerous evolutionary pressures, and each may bepart of a larger behavioral strategy. This comprehensive overview details how diversity in habitat andecological requirements has led to enormous variety in adhesivecell components, underlying genetic determinants, and behavioralstrategies. It presents the latest research on adhesion mechanismsand strategies found in diverse environments and microorganisms, including the new environment of biomaterials. Bacterial Adhesion: Molecular and Ecological Diversity examinesadhesion as a strategy for nutrient access and as a phase in thecomplex behavior of life cycle processes. It covers the latestresearch and innovative approaches in the field, including: * Conceptual advances in research on the adhesion of bacteria tooral surfaces * Enhancing colonization in a fluctuating environment * The cellulosome: a cell-surface organelle for the adhesion to anddegradation of cellulose * Pseudomonas aeruginosa--versatile attachment mechanisms * Sensing, response, and adaptation to surfaces * Myxococcus coadhesion and role in the life cycle Edited by a leading authority on bacterial adhesion and featuringcontributions from the field's leading experts, this book speaks toresearchers in all areas of microbiology, biotechnology, environmental technology, and environmental science, as well asurology, immunology, and infectious diseases. Bacterial Adhesion: Molecular and Ecological Diversity is thelatest addition to the Wiley Series in Ecological and AppliedMicrobiology. Recent books in the series include: * Microbial Transformation and Degradation of Toxic OrganicChemicals edited by Lily Y. Young and Carl E. Book excerpt: Marine Enzymes Biotechnology: Production and Industrial Applications, Part I, Production of Enzymes provides a huge treasure trove of information on marine organisms. Nowadays, marine organisms are good candidates for enzymes production and have been recognized as a rich source of biological molecules that are of potential interest to various industries. Marine enzymes such as amylases, carboxymethylcellulases, proteases, chitinases, keratinases, xylanases, agarases, lipases, peroxidase and tyrosinases are widely used in the industry for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages, and confectioneries, as well as in textile and leather processing, and in waste water treatment. The majority of the enzymes used in the industry are of microbial origin because microbial enzymes are relatively more stable than the corresponding enzymes derived from plants and animals. Focuses on the isolation, characterization, and industrial application of marine enzymes Provides current trends and development of industrial important marine enzymes, including amylases, carboxymethylcellulases, proteases, chitinases, keratinases, xylanases, agarases, lipases, peroxidase, and tyrosinases Presents insights into current trends and approaches for marine enzymes
