Les aspects fondamentaux et moléculaires de la Microbiologie sont abordés de manière à permettre au lecteur de mieux comprendre les applications biologiques et technologiques actuelles, utilisées par les professionnels Pharmaciens, Médecins ou Scientifiques. Cet ouvrage contient les bases solides sur la biologie des bactéries et des virus, un aperçu sur le champ immense des applications de ces notions, débouchant non seulement sur des activités professionnelles classiques (Officine, Biologie, Industrie), mais aussi sur des activités traditionnellement moins explorées par le pharmacien, comme le contrôle, la protection de l'environnement, l'alimentation humaine et animale, l'hygiène des établissements de soins, la recherche des activités bénéfiques ou délétères des micro-organismes sur les produits et matériaux. Ensuite, sont détaillés les différents agents antibactériens et antiviraux, ainsi que l'évaluation de leurs mécanismes d'action. Puis sont traitées les applications de ces notions, comme le principe du diagnostic des bactéries et des virus, les conséquences sur l'écologie microbienne et la santé humaine. Le pouvoir pathogène et la virulence des micro-organismes sont abordés avec leurs conséquences sur la pathogenèse. Le livre se termine en évoquant les méthodes de contrôle microbiologique, des notions de sécurité bactérienne et virale des aliments et des médicaments, ainsi que des risques infectieux au laboratoire.
