Book excerpt: The second book of my publication, and the very first in the series “Introduction to Microbiology”, is made of two parts. The first part takes one through the microbial world of diversity by introducing to each of the diverse group of microorganism that exist around us and are omnipresent. The information and understanding about the diverse world of microbes is due to the tireless efforts and dedication of various microbiologist working in diverse areas of microbiology. The developments occurring through time and in different areas are discussed in the second chapter of the book. An important tool used to study the microorganism is microscope. A chapter has been dedicated to different microscopes including some of the newer micrcorscope. The techniques for microscopy are also dealt using figures for easy understanding. Part one has also included a chapter of ‘Biomolecules’. The second part of the book is basically about the physiology of prokaryotes. It begins with the various types of classification of organism and criteria, methods used for classification of organism. The later chapter of this part deals with the ultrastructure of proparyotic cell, its nutritional requirements and growth of microbes..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated second edition of Molecular Typing in Bacterial Infections, presented in two volumes, covers both common and neglected bacterial pathogenic agents, highlighting the most effective methods for their identification and classification in the light of their specific epidemiology. New chapters have been included to add new species, as well as another view of how bacterial typing can be used. These books are valuable resources for the molecular typing of infectious disease agents encountered in both research and hospital clinical laboratory settings, as well as in culture collections and in the industry. Each of the 21 chapters provides an overview of specific molecular approaches to efficiently detect and type different bacterial pathogens. The chapters are grouped in five parts, covering respiratory and urogenital pathogens (Volume I), and gastrointestinal and healthcare-associated pathogens, as well as a new group of vector-borne and Biosafety level 3 pathogens including a description of typing methods used in the traditional microbiology laboratory in comparison to molecular methods of epidemiology (Volume II). Comprehensive and updated, Molecular Typing in Bacterial Infections provides state-of-the-art methods for accurate diagnosis and for the correct classification of different types which will prove to be critical in unravelling the transmission routes of human pathogens.

Book excerpt: The ability of pathogens, such as parasites, bacteria, fungi and viruses to invade, persist and adapt in both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts is multifactorial and depends on both pathogen and host fitness. Communication between a pathogen and its host relies on a wide and dynamic array of molecular interactions. Through this constant communication most pathogens evolved to be relatively benign, whereas killing of its host by a pathogen represents a failure to adapt. Pathogens are lethal to their host when their interaction has not been long enough for adaptation. Evolution has selected conserved immune receptors that recognize signature patterns of pathogens as non-self elements and initiate host innate responses aimed at eradicating infection. Conversely, pathogens evolved mechanisms to evade immune recognition and subvert cytokine secretion in order to survive, replicate and cause disease. The cell signaling machinery is a critical component of the immune system that relays information from the receptors to the nucleus where transcription of key immune genes is activated. Host cells have developed signal transduction systems to maintain homeostasis with pathogens. Most cellular processes and cell signaling pathways are tightly regulated by protein phosphorylation in which protein kinases are key protagonists. Pathogens have developed multiple mechanisms to subvert important signal transduction pathways such as the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and the nuclear factor kB (NF-kB) pathways. Pathogens also secrete effectors that manipulate actin cytoskeleton and its regulators, hijack cell cycle machinery and alter vesicular trafficking. This research topic focuses on the cellular signaling mechanisms that are essential for host immunity and their subversion by pathogens.

Book excerpt: This collection of photographs is not a pictorial history of the Colony of Natal - it is essentially an entertainment; glimpses of the activities and events in the daily lives of ordinary people. While this book does not claim to be a pictorial history, photographs from the past are part of the historical record and, while some pictures are complete in what they depict, others need some background historical knowledge to be fully appreciated. Therefore the book provides a brief outline of some of the more important events in the history of the colony. They have been given at intervals in the book and it is hoped that they will serve to remind readers of the events of the period covered by the photographs. Secondly where possible a caption has been used against each photograph and a quotation by a contemporary or authoritative author.
