MSMEs not only play a crucial role in providing large employment opportunities, at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries, but also help in the industrialization of rural and backward areas, thereby reducing regional imbalances and assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth. MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and contribute enormously to the socio-economic development of India. The sector is significant to the manufacturing output, employment, and exports of the country. However, MSMEs face a number of problems which have resulted in their retarded growth. Inadequate working capital, a shortage of trained personnel, and obsolete technology are the major barriers to the growth of MSMEs in India. This present volume provides an exhaustive analytical account of the functioning of MSMEs in India. It discusses their role in the country's economy, policies, and programs of the government to promote them, and the problems faced by them in the context of globalization and liberalization of world economies.

MSMEs not only play a crucial role in providing large employment opportunities, at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries, but also help in industrialisation of rural and backward areas, thereby reducing regional imbalances, and assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth. MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and contribute enormously to the socio-economic development of the country. The sector contributes significantly to manufacturing output, employment and exports of the country. MSMEs, though important, face a number of problems which have resulted in their retarded growth. Inadequate working capital, lack of information to access domestic and international markets, shortage of trained personnel and obsolete technology are the major barriers to the growth of MSMEs in India. In the post-WTO agenda, domestic markets have been opened up for imports, creating severe competition for the local industries. At the same time, it has created opportunities for small industries to tap global markets. The growth of the MSMEs sector must be a central focus of Indias manufacturing strategy. This sector is the foundation for a strong manufacturing area providing greater employment with less capital. It has a complementary relationship with large industries because it supplies components and inputs to them. It is the entry point for workers and entrepreneurs who move through it to large-scale enterprises. The present volume contains 13 scholarly papers, authored by experts in the field, which provide an analytical account of the functioning of MSMEs in India.

Book excerpt: The resignation of Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI from the technology giant, Google, in May 2023, has triggered debates on the evolving techno-economic paradigm that is being unfolded, with possible unfavorable stakes on jobs and business sustainability. Besides its usual annual review of policy, practice, and developments, this twenty-sixth issue of the ‘India MSME Report series’ closely examines such scenario, and explores new directions in public policy and strategies. Bringing together the two streams of thinking, ie, the “Vikasit Bharat” agenda of the Government of India, and the vision of “Unleashing entrepreneurship”, as outlined by the United Nations, it puts forth the motto of “India First; SMEs First”, as the way forward. This Report puts forth a new vision and horizon for MSMEs in the country: ‘decentralized smart manufacturing’.

However, emerging economies have a long way to go before they achieve the same levels of competitiveness as a developed economy. Lack of firm institutions, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of trust in the legal system are urgent and unavoidable factors that emerging economies must address. The Handbook of Research on Increasing the Competitiveness of SMEs provides innovative insights on integrating, adapting, and building models and strategies compatible with the development of competitiveness in small and medium enterprises in emerging countries. The content within this publication examines quality management, organizational leadership, and digital security. It is designed for policymakers, entrepreneurs, managers, executives, business professionals, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are an important instrument of growth for India's economy. The contribution of the MSME sector to India's gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to be around 8 to 9 percent in 2012 after agriculture; MSMEs have emerged as the second largest source of employment in India. For growth to be inclusive and equitable, it is critical to understand how to enhance the role of women in the economy and in particular in the MSME sector. In order to fill the gap, the World Bank has commissioned International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW), Asia Regional Office, New Delhi to conduct a short, field based assessment of gender issues in MSMEs in India. The study involved field-based assessment of gender related issues in select MSME clusters to identify challenges and opportunities for inclusion of women in higher numbers and at higher levels of growth in the MSME sector. The study findings will ultimately be operationalized into a Bank-supported MSME project in India and help inform Government of India policy on more inclusive growth of the MSME sector, especially towards strengthening gender equality and economic empowerment of women in the sector.

Book excerpt: Small enterprises exist in the form of factories, workshops, and trade and service organizations, ranging from the simple and traditional to the most modern. The operational range varies from independent enterprises to ancillaries, sub-contractors, and vendors engaged in catering to the needs of the markets, extending from the domestic to the global horizon. These enterprises exist in various forms, such as proprietorship, partnership, companies, or co-operatives. Though the main objectives of small enterprises are almost the same, they are defined and viewed differently in different countries. In India, prior to the enactment of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006, small industries were comprised of tiny, cottage, traditional, and village enterprises. These enterprises were fragmented across various ministries/departments of the government of India for the purpose of development schemes and concessions. In order to streamline procedures, correct discrepancies, and avoid neglect of certain sectors, the MSMED Act was enacted on June 16, 2006. This Act provides the first-ever legal framework recognizing the concept of 'enterprise' (comprising both manufacturing and service entities), defining medium enterprises, and integrating the three tiers of these enterprises, namely micro, small, and medium. Ã?Â?Ã?Â?This book deals with various aspects of the development of small enterprises in India, including their advantages, performance, and problems. More importantly, it suggests measures which would enhance the competitiveness of small enterprises in order to enable them to compete in the globalized world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector plays a crucial role in economic development of the nation. Growth cannot be inclusive unless and until the fruits of the growth is percolated to the bottom of pyramid. Specifically in a developing nation like India where inequality in distribution of wealth and income is significantly high, sustained increase in per capita income cannot be translated automatically to sustained increase in standard of living. In order to alleviate the curse of poverty, inequity, unemployment and underemployment, adequate employment opportunities should be created for the poor mass which will facilitate them to meet their subsistence level of consumption demand. The MSMEs players can discharge the responsibility of adequate employment creation provided major impetus is provided by the Government to boost the sector through appropriate policy prescriptions. The objective of the proposed research paper is to analyze the current status of MSMEs in India, to determine the extent of funding the sector receives from different sources, to identify various risks and challenges that the sector is facing across the nation and to develop the strategies for the MSMEs players so that they will be able to provide maximum benefit to the maximum number of stakeholders of the nation. The methodology of the proposed work consist survey of existing literatures from different scholarly research articles available in several reputed national and international journals and analysis of secondary data. The paper will focus on an alternative economic model where adequate impetus will be given to the small scale entrepreneurs instead of providing excessive leverage towards large corporate players. The paper will add a new dimension in the sphere of distributive justice.
