Book Synopsis Engaged Anthropology by : Stuart Kirsch
Download or read book Engaged Anthropology written by Stuart Kirsch and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does anthropology have more to offer than just its texts? In this timely and remarkable book, Stuart Kirsch shows how anthropology can—and why it should—become more engaged with the problems of the world. Engaged Anthropology draws on the author’s experiences working with indigenous peoples fighting for their environment, land rights, and political sovereignty. Including both short interventions and collaborations spanning decades, it recounts interactions with lawyers and courts, nongovernmental organizations, scientific experts, and transnational corporations. This unflinchingly honest account addresses the unexamined “backstage” of engaged anthropology. Coming at a time when some question the viability of the discipline, the message of this powerful and original work is especially welcome, as it not only promotes a new way of doing anthropology, but also compellingly articulates a new rationale for why anthropology matters.

Book Synopsis Psychology; Or, a View of the Human Soul by : Frederick August Rauch
Download or read book Psychology; Or, a View of the Human Soul written by Frederick August Rauch and published by . This book was released on 1840 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The principal object of the author in writing this book, was to render this noble and delightful science accessible to all classes of readers. A second object of the author was to give the science of man a direct bearing upon other sciences, and especially upon religion and theology. Psychology and theology are connected by their common subject, which is man. The present work is, as far as the author knows, the first attempt to unite German and American mental philosophy. This design has not been executed by bringing together two separate systems or by forming an eclectic compound, which is neither the one nor the other, and the parts of which do not grow forth from one spirit, but are brought together from different sources and united by the writer--a real sphinx in the sphere of science"--Preface. Book Synopsis Experimental Collaborations by : Adolfo Estalella
Download or read book Experimental Collaborations written by Adolfo Estalella and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the accounts compiled in this book, ethnography occurs through processes of material and social interventions that turn the field into a site for epistemic collaboration. Through creative interventions that unfold what we term as “fieldwork devices”—such as coproduced books, the circulation of repurposed data, co-organized events, authorization protocols, relational frictions, and social rhythms—anthropologists engage with their counterparts in the field in the construction of joint anthropological problematizations. In these situations, the traditional tropes of the fieldwork encounter (i.e. immersion and distance) give way to a narrative of intervention, where the aesthetics of collaboration in the production of knowledge substitutes or intermingles with participant observation. Building on this, the book proposes the concept of “experimental collaborations” to describe and conceptualize this distinctive ethnographic modality.
Book Synopsis Divided Bodies by : Abigail A. Dumes
Download or read book Divided Bodies written by Abigail A. Dumes and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many doctors claim that Lyme disease—a tick-borne bacterial infection—is easily diagnosed and treated, other doctors and the patients they care for argue that it can persist beyond standard antibiotic treatment in the form of chronic Lyme disease. In Divided Bodies, Abigail A. Dumes offers an ethnographic exploration of the Lyme disease controversy that sheds light on the relationship between contested illness and evidence-based medicine in the United States. Drawing on fieldwork among Lyme patients, doctors, and scientists, Dumes formulates the notion of divided bodies: she argues that contested illnesses are disorders characterized by the division of bodies of thought in which the patient's experience is often in conflict with how it is perceived. Dumes also shows how evidence-based medicine has paradoxically amplified differences in practice and opinion by providing a platform of legitimacy on which interested parties—patients, doctors, scientists, politicians—can make claims to medical truth.
