Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a magician [Blust-O] tries to hypnotize a woman [Mica] on stage, giving her the power to fly, she enters a floating world that takes her to the past, the future…and away from the present where she is taken hostage in a theatre by terrorists. The three Micas (present/future/past) live in different historical times…And perhaps in the same brain…with the same passion for truth, the same pulse of sexual energy. Part I / The Present / NYC 35 year-old Mica Paradis thinks her lover, Richard is betraying her. Distraught, she attends a fund-raising event and impulsively volunteers to be hypnotized on-stage by Blust-O, an other-worldly creature with peculiar proclivities and perversities. When gun-wielding terrorists take the entire audience hostage, Mica is still entranced…There is nothing the hypnotist can do to bring her back--except to follow her into the floating world with a strange box strapped to his back. The sand-coloured box contains a gift that is both mythic and erotic. Part II / The Future / Tokyo When a manga artist, Hiro Mitaguri, creates Mica, the Miracle Girl, she surprises him by taking over the story. Inviting him into the plot, she seduces him into writing himself into the story as a character: the Animator. Flying back into his version of the narrative, she battles the evil ACCETES who will stop at nothing to capture her memories and use them to destroy the world. Her quest is to vanquish ACCETES, retrieve the Golden Box from the Theatre of Surprises…and keep control of her brain. And rather than being just a sidekick, the Animator is a sinister voyeur, watching his own creation, a cyborg, become human and more and more sensual. Action shifts back and forth between graphic sequential art episodes (manga)…to even more terrifying natural and unnatural disasters let loose on the planet. In the future---as in the present---fears, hopes and urgencies that confront everyday citizens are ignored by those in power. Part III / 1777 / Vienna When Anton Mesmer demonstrates the miraculous powers of Animal Magnetism, 5-year-old Mica is in the audience watching him bring sight to a blind girl. A bizarre system of fluids and the curative power of light streaming from his fingers disturbs Mica and disrupts her sight. Now she sees beyond the surface of things, and apprehends the future--without understanding the unfolding images in her brain…or the folding and enfolding Universe in which she travels. Mother flirts with Herr Burger and maybe more is going on…Father, sadly, finds the truth. Mother resists Mesmer's powers to cure her of somnambulism by imbuing the Tree of Life plant in her garden with vital fluids that can curtail nightly wanderings. At first the blind girl's father agrees to her further treatments…but then accuses Mesmer of being a charlatan, and causes an uproar

Book excerpt: Marine officer. CIA analyst. President. Jack Ryan has devoted his life to protecting the United States. What if this time he can't? President Ryan and the Campus return in this entry to Tom Clancy's #1 New York Times bestselling series. Freedom may have finally arrived in Iran. As protests break out across the country, the media rejoices over the so-called Persian Spring. Western leaders are ecstatic. Members of Congress and the Cabinet clamor to back the rebels. Only President Jack Ryan remains wary. Meanwhile, he has plenty to handle at home. A deadly strain of flu is ravaging the United States as spring floods decimate the Southeast. An unethical senator wants to bring down the Ryan presidency and is willing to lean on fabricated bot-planted stories to do it. But the scariest story is the most closely guarded one. Two Russian nuclear missiles have been hijacked. The Campus gets its first break when Jack Jr. connects with a rogue Russian intelligence officer in Afghanistan--only to be abducted soon after arriving. John Clark and the rest of the Campus team race to track the missiles and rescue their colleague. As sensationalized stories spin out of control and the stolen missiles remain out of reach, President Ryan's toughest challenge emerges: How do you meet an enemy head on when he won't even show you his face?

An ex-Special Forces bounty hunter, who likes working alone, accepts the challenge of teaching a feisty young woman how to hunt… Former Army Special Forces, Mica Ford, is a bounty hunter now. He likes the work and likes being his own boss. When a hunt goes awry, and a team of hunters from Montana Bounty Hunters provides an assist, he’s persuaded to at least listen to what the head of their agency has to offer and agrees to a meeting. Amy Calloway wants more than anything to prove to the people of Dead Horse, Montana, that she’s not a loser simply because she shares a last name with “those Calloway brothers.” Since she’s not cut out for any other more reputable job, she has set her sights on being a bounty hunter. She’s fit, has spent an afternoon or two at the firing range, and has watched every episode of Bounty Hunters of the Northwest – We’re Dead Horse. When she walks into the MBH office to ask for a job, she knows she’s as ready as she’ll ever be. Mica has no intention of accepting a job with MBH, but he watches Amy work up the courage to demand her chance. Her sincerity and courage impress him, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s cute as hell. He finds himself accepting a trial run working with the team and then commits to training Amy—just to make sure she stays safe. However, keeping her safe while teaching her how to hunt becomes a challenge when Amy starts improvising during takedowns…

Book excerpt: This book, in two volumes, breathes fresh air empirically, methodologically, and theoretically into understanding the rich ceremonial lives, the philosophical-religious knowledge, and the impressive material feats and labor organization that distinguish Hopewell Indians of central Ohio and neighboring regions during the first centuries CE. The first volume defines cross-culturally, for the first time, the “ritual drama” as a genre of social performance. It reconstructs and compares parts of 14 such dramas that Hopewellian and other Woodland-period peoples performed in their ceremonial centers to help the soul-like essences of their deceased make the journey to an afterlife. The second volume builds and critiques ten formal cross-cultural models of “personhood” and the “self” and infers the nature of Scioto Hopewell people’s ontology. Two facets of their ontology are found to have been instrumental in their creating the intercommunity alliances and cooperation and gathering the labor required to construct their huge, multicommunity ceremonial centers: a relational, collective concept of the self defined by the ethical quality of the relationships one has with other beings, and a concept of multiple soul-like essences that compose a human being and can be harnessed strategically to create familial-like ethical bonds of cooperation among individuals and communities. The archaeological reconstructions of Hopewellian ritual dramas and concepts of personhood and the self, and of Hopewell people’s strategic uses of these, are informed by three large surveys of historic Woodland and Plains Indians’ narratives, ideas, and rites about journeys to afterlives, the creatures who inhabit the cosmos, and the nature and functions of soul-like essences, coupled with rich contextual archaeological and bioarchaeological-taphonomic analyses. The bioarchaeological-taphonomic method of l’anthropologie de terrain, new to North American archaeology, is introduced and applied. In all, the research in this book vitalizes a vision of an anthropology committed to native logic and motivation and skeptical of the imposition of Western world views and categories onto native peoples.

Book excerpt: 'Asks what it is to be human. Visceral, mind-bending and tender.' - Inga Simpson In late twenty-first century Australia, Tao-Yi and her partner Navin spend most of their time inside a hyper-immersive, hyper-consumerist virtual reality called Gaia. They log on, go to work, socialise, and even eat in this digital utopia. Meanwhile their aging bodies lie suspended in pods inside cramped apartments. Across the city, in the abandoned 'real' world, Tao-Yi's mother remains stubbornly offline, preferring instead to indulge in memories of her life in Malaysia. When a new technology is developed to permanently upload a human brain to Gaia, Tao-Yi must decide what is most important: a digital future, or an authentic past. Never Let Me Go meets Black Mirror, with a dash of Murakami surrealism thrown in, this is speculative literary fiction at its best.
