Book excerpt: The essays in this volume constitute a portion of the research program being carried out by the International Society for Phenomenology and the Human Sciences. Established as an affiliate society of the World Institute for Ad vanced Phenomenological Research and Learning in 1976, in Arezzo, Italy, by the president of the Institute, Dr Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, this particular society is devoted to an exploration of the relevance of phenomenological methods and insights for an understanding of the origins and goals of the specialised human sciences. The essays printed in the first part of the book were originally presented at the Second Congress of this society held at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, 12-14 July 1979. The second part of the volume consists of selected essays from the third convention (the Eleventh International Congress of Phenomenology of the World Phenomen ology Institute) held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1981. With the third part of this book we pass into the "Human Rights" issue as treated by the World Phenomenology Institute at the Interamerican Philosophy Congress held in Tallahassee, Florida, also in 1981. The volume opens with a mono graph by Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka on the foundations of ethics in the moral practice within the life-world and the social world shown as clearly distinct. The main ideas of this work had been presented by Tymieniecka as lead lectures to the three conferences giving them a tight research-project con sistency.

Twenty years of sexual repression culminated in an extreme case of pelvic floor dysfunction, one of the various types of female sexual disorders. The testimony gathered in these leaves carries into the wind a wounded soul, healed along with her body by the curative balm of expert hands and by the providential warmth of a ray of Sun over a world made green anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards in the Essay category From award-winning, internationally known scholar and translator Ilan Stavans comes On Self-Translation, a collection of essays and conversations on language in its multifaceted forms. Stavans discusses the way syntax is being restructured by texting and other technologies. He examines how the alphabet itself is being forgotten by the young, how finger snapping has taken on a new meaning, how the use of ellipses has lapsed, and how autocorrect is shaping the way we communicate. In an incisive meditation, he shows how translating one's own work reinvents oneself in another tongue. The volume includes tête-à-têtes with Pulitzer Prize–winner Richard Wilbur and short-fiction master Lydia Davis, as well as dialogues on silence, multilingualism, poetry, and the durability of the classics. Stavans's explorations cover Spanish, English, Hebrew, Yiddish, and the hybrid lexicon of Spanglish. He muses on the meaning of foreignness and on living and dying in different languages. Among his primary concerns are the role and history of dictionaries and the extent to which the authority of language academies is less a reality than a delusion. He concludes with renditions into Spanglish of portions of Hamlet, Don Quixote, and The Little Prince. The wide range of themes and engaging yet informed style confirm Stavans's status, in the words of the Washington Post, as "Latin America's liveliest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On their return to New Mexico from El Paso after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, the New Mexican settlers were confronted with continuous raids by hostile Indians tribes, disease and an inhospitable landscape. In spite of this, in the early and mid-eighteenth century, the New Mexicans went about their daily lives as best they could, as shown in original documents from the time. The documents show them making deals, traveling around the countryside and to and from El Paso and Mexico City, complaining about and arguing with each other, holding festivals, and making plans for the future of their children. It also shows them interacting with the presidio soldiers, the Franciscan friars and Inquisition officials, El Paso and Chihuahua merchants, the occasional Frenchman, and their Pueblo Indian allies. Because many of the documents include oral testimony, we are able to read what they had to say, sometimes angry, asking for help, or giving excuses for their behavior, as written down by a scribe at the time. This book includes fifty-four original handwritten documents from the early and mid-eighteenth century. Most of the original documents are located in the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, although some are from the Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley, the Archivo General de la Nacion in Mexico City, and elsewhere. They were selected for their description of Spanish Colonial life, of interest to the many descendants of the characters that appear in them, and because they tell a good story. A translation and transcription of each document is included as well as a synopsis, background notes, and biographical notes. They can be considered a companion, in part, to Ralph Emerson Twitchell’s 1914 two volumes, The Spanish Archives of New Mexico, summarizing the documents of the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, now available in new editions from Sunstone Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following poems are prayers and songs. Except for Cuba Errante, which is a plea to the Mother of God to intercede for the difficult plight of Cubans both at home and abroad-- these songs are meditations based on biblical passages and themes. I call them poetic icons because, like the ancient pictorial icons of our Judeo-Christian heritage, the intent of these poems is also, first, to focus the attention of the reader into the scene that is being depicted, in order to see the presence of God at work in that particular scene and in its characters; second, the intent is to help readers catch a glimpse of the divine presence and warmth that illuminates each particular scene. Third, as is the case with sacred pictorial icons, it is also the intent of these poems to help readers in the present time identify with the struggles of those ancient biblical characters, and with the way the Spirit of God is still at work now in each of the readers that contemplate these scenes. I was inspired to write some of these poems in English; others, in Spanish. In some cases, I made the effort to make the poems available in both languages. Thank you for your patience with the bilingual nature of this collection. Is there music to these songs? Yes, and it is our hope to make it available to you in an ensuing publication. Thank you again!

Book excerpt: I dedicate these short essays and poems to all the men and women that have been hurt by the spouse or that have been responsible for hurting their spouse and faced separation or divorce. For women that had chosen abortion to please a man they love and had been unable of protecting their precious child. For the ones that are in transition, and the ones that are searching for truth and love. For the men and women who are waiting on God to provide them the right spouse but they are facing sexual needs that need to be kept under control until they get married. For all the married couples who enjoy sex as an act of love; where a man and a woman become one physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to experience the higher expression of God given to mankind after the love of the Father.

Book excerpt: In contemporary popular culture, armed women take center stage - but how can they be read from a feminist perspective? How do films, comics, and TV series depict the newly fashionable gunwomen between objectification and feminist empowerment? The contributions to this volume ask this question from different vantage points in cultural and literary studies, film and visual culture studies, history, and art history. They examine military and civic gun cultures, the rediscovery of historical armed women and revolutionaries, cultural phenomena such as gangsta rap, narcocultura and US politics, Bollywood and French cinema, and distinct genres such as the graphic novel, the romance novel, or the German police procedural Tatort.
