Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico It is equally true of nations as of individuals, that those who are not entirely assured Of a well-established and unquestioned position, are peculiarly sensitive to criticism, however kindly meant or respectfully expressed. Of no people in the world is this more true than of the Mexicans. They understand perfectly their true position in the estima tion of the world, notwithstanding their characteristic vaunting and gasconade. I think that it is generally true that men are most apt to boast of qualities which they are conscious of not possessing. The Mexican character has much that is good in it, but very much also that is bad. In bearing testimony to the former, I cannot be silent as to the latter - for indiscriminate praise is in its effects censure. My fault has been much more that of extenuation than setting down aught in malice - the latter cum, for I was treated with so much kindness by people of all classes, from the lepero in the streets up to the President, that it would be a source of deep pain to me to know that I had wantonly wounded the feelings of any one person in the broad circumference of the Republic. I assure them in all sincerity that I take a deep interest in their continued advances in the great career Of civil liberty, and 'their ultimate success in establishing Repub lican institutions on a permanent basis. God grant them success, both on their own account as well as for the great cause in which they have so long struggled, and under circumstances so discouraging. We had been discussing the rubber question and its possibilities. I had agreed to take an interest in a plantation but said Missourian-like, Show me, and the agreement to Visit Mexico and this particular plantation was an assured fact before we left the lunch table. While there exist, it is true, many voluminous tomes, by such historians as Zarate, Bustamente, Zavala and others dealing with different epochs, in the story of the Southern Republic, - they are unreliable on account of prejudice and partiality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roy and Ray: In Mexico This volume does not pretend to be a guide book to Mexico, or a history of the country. It is simply the record of an actual journey to seven or eight Mexican cities and towns, as experienced by two intelligent, wide-awake children, with some one at hand to answer their questions and call their attention to things they might otherwise not have noticed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilization of Ancient Mexico Since the time of Prescott no attempt appears to have been made to collate and present within reasonable compass for popular consumption the vast amount of matter, ancient and modern, relating to the history of the Mexican people. The author does not claim to have done this. Others have attempted it, but have usually presented it with their considerations upon other American civilizations. The purpose of this book is to provide not only a merely popular history of Ancient Mexico, but such a sketch of the subject as will appeal to serious students who may Wish to adopt the study of Mexican antiquities. In its scope nothing has been included which is not strictly verifiable from original sources. Speculation has not been altogether abandoned, but has been omitted except in those instances where reasons of special import called for it. At the same time whilst doubtful matter has been almost ruth lessly eliminated, such traditions as appeared to possess any substratum of fact and value from their bearing upon Mexican history, have not been altogether ignored, but have been included in the chapter upon the history of the Nahuan peoples, care being taken to draw particular attention to their legendary origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Mexico The following volume is the outcome of a visit paid to Mexico in the early part of the present year. I had only just returned from the Balkans, where I had accompanied the Servian Army in the war against Turkey, when the editor of the Daily Telegraph commissioned me to proceed to Mexico and investigate the conditions prevailing there. Several of the chapters now included in this book originally appeared in that journal, but these have been, for the most part, rewritten, and some new matter has been added. It was also thought advisable to include an historical sketch, in order that the reader might be able to trace the origin of the Republic and form some appreciation of the causes of Mexican unrest. In dealing with recent events I may appear to some people to take a too adverse view of the results of the policy and administration of the late President Madero. The conclusions arrived at in this respect were formed only after a careful investigation of the evidence available in Mexico itself. The same remark applies to the criticisms made with reference to the attitude of the United States towards the de facto Government of the Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gods of Mexico Although political and financial conditions in Mexico frequently arouse a passing agitation in the minds of British people, the antiquities of that extraordinary land. Various as Greece and mysterious as Egypt, have failed to appeal to them with the same degree of interest. We have not yet, perhaps, quite recovered from the amazement with which in our own day we have seen the secret gates of the East unlocked and the prodigies of Mesopotamia and the endless dynasties of the Nile emerge therefrom. Yet an archaeology less venerable, but no less notable, pleads with us for recogni tion from a continent so closely associated with the spirit of modernity that we can scarcely believe in its ability to present us with the credentials of respectable antiquity. American scientists, however, have in recent years successfully addressed themselves to the problems of Isthmian research, and the antiquaries of Germany and France have, in certain respects, even improved upon their endeavours. Great Britain alone remains insensible to the lure of old Mexico, and small indeed is the band of workers that she has given to this department of archaeology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico in Revolution The various articles in this volume were written, on my return from Mexico, for the New Fork Times, the Chicago Tribune and other important newspapers in the United States. When I began my articles, the revolution which finally overthrew Carranza had not yet triumphed and "the old man" was is still alive. Events moved rapidly while the articles were coming out. Carranza was assassinated and Obregon, with the militarist party, came into power. Works of the moment, these articles record my various impressions of the days during which they were written. They do not, in consequence, show the unity and homogeneity of a book written after the fact on events already complete in themselves and easily appreciable to the person observing them in perspective and as a whole. I might, of course, have remodeled these articles and reduced them to chapter form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico's Dilemma Mexico's Dilemma has three horns. They are: 1. Financial ruin of Mexico and internal disorders unless a loan is obtained. 2. The possibility of subjugation to German influence with all of its liability for external strife. 3. Co-operation with the United States, England, France and America. What will Mexico do? The answer is one which future events will determine. In this book the author has tried to tell what forces and influences are sharpening each of the three horns. There are bandits, disloyal Mexicans, ambitious officials, patriotic citizens, honest business men, Teutonic intriguers, spies, propagandists, diplomats, millionaires, army officers and I. W. W. firebrands at work. Is it any wonder, then, that Mexico finds herself in such a Dilemma? Mexico has always been a home and workshop for foreigners. Several thousand years ago the Chinese settled in that country and, judging from the relics which are found to-day, in and about Mexico City, Chinese civilisation flourished there for a few hundred years. Wild journeys on horse back through the mountains, to Old Aztec ruins, more over, sounded inviting. In some respects Mexico, in this year Of grace 1901, is highly civilised, but in others it remains utterly barbaric. Truly a land of paradox. It is most interesting, always picturesque, sometimes blood-curdling, and Often sad. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Feeling that this was a grand opportunity for a skilful pen upon an interesting subject, and that the requisite talent for the purpose was not lacking in our party, I was reluctant to undertake the work, until sufficient time had elapsed to satisfy me, at least, that unless I took it upon myself it might remain unwritten, and forever lost, except to the memory of a few of those who, like myself, participated in it. This story, which must of necessity be in the form of a diary of events, is made up largely from private memoranda which were made day after day, with the sole object of refreshing the memory, when relating an account of the journey upon my return home. Of books on Mexico published in English during the present generation the most were written by hasty travelers or conventional compilers, whose views and portraitures are inevitably immature, partial, or exaggerated.
