Book excerpt: Analyzes the extent to which foreign investment in Mexico's information technology sector brought economic, social, and environmental benefits to Guadalajara. Foreign investment has been widely perceived as a panacea for developing countries—as a way to reduce poverty and kick-start sustainable modern industries. The Enclave Economy calls this prescription into question, showing that Mexico's post-NAFTA experience of foreign direct investment in its information technology sector, particularly in the Guadalajara region, did not result in the expected benefits. Charting the rise and fall of Mexico's “Silicon Valley,” the authors explore issues that resonate through much of Latin America and the developing world: the social, economic, and environmental effects of market-driven globalization. In the 1990s, Mexico was a poster child for globalization, throwing open its borders to trade and foreign investment, embracing NAFTA, and ending the government's role in strengthening domestic industry. But The Enclave Economy shows that although Mexico was initially successful in attracting multinational corporations, foreign investments waned in the absence of active government support and as China became increasingly competitive. Moreover, the authors find that foreign investment created an “enclave economy” the benefits of which were confined to an international sector not connected to the wider Mexican economy. In fact, foreign investment put many local IT firms out of business and transferred only limited amounts of environmentally sound technology. The authors suggest policies and strategies that will enable Mexico and other developing countries to foster foreign investment for sustainable development in the future.
Book Synopsis Cross Border Trade and Investmant with Mexico by : Philip T Von Mehren
Download or read book Cross Border Trade and Investmant with Mexico written by Philip T Von Mehren and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A penetrating study of the impact of NAFTA on Mexico's economic development, this is the only in-depth comparison of Mexican trade law before and after NAFTA, and of how considerations of trade with Mexico altered the provisions (from the earlier Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and the GATT) that formed the basis of the new trilateral project. Mr. von Mehren's book is a point of departure not only for understanding and applying the trade law common to North America but for assessing the likely course of historic negotiations still to come. Published under the Transnational Publishers imprint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference guide to the laws and legal literature of Mexico has been designed carefully by a reference librarian for researchers who do not read or speak Spanish. This basic sourcebook provides answers to the questions that are asked most frequently: Which is the relevant code? Where can the text of the code be found? What secondary material is available? Which material is available in English? This up-to-date guide should be useful as a reference in college, university, law, government, and public libraries and in companies that do business with Mexico. It could also be used in courses dealing with Mexican law and business. An introduction briefly describes Mexico's legal system and provides some historical background. Then the bibliography points to primary and secondary material of importance and is annotated partially. Entries are organized under forty-one subject categories with subdivisions pointing to the laws, the sources for the text of the laws, secondary materials from periodicals, and books and monographs. All Spanish titles are given first in Spanish and then in English. An appendix gives a directory of publishers. Author and subject indexes are included.
Book Synopsis Industry, the State, and Public Policy in Mexico by : Dale Story
Download or read book Industry, the State, and Public Policy in Mexico written by Dale Story and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industrialization process in Mexico began before that of any other nation in Latin America except Argentina, with the most rapid expansion of new industrial firms occurring in the 1930s and 1940s, and import substitution in capital goods evident as early as the late 1930s. Though Mexico’s trade relations have always been dependent on the United States, successive Mexican presidents in the postwar period attempted to control the penetration of foreign capital into Mexican markets. In Industry, the State, and Public Policy in Mexico, Dale Story, recognizing the significance of the Mexican industrial sector, analyzes the political and economic role of industrial entrepreneurs in postwar Mexico. He uses two original data sets—industrial production data for 1929–1983 and a survey of the political attitudes of leaders of the two most important industrial organizations in Mexico—to address two major theoretical arguments relating to Latin American development: the meaning of late and dependent development and the nature of the authoritarian state. Story accepts the general relevance of these themes to Mexico but asserts that the country is an important variant of both. With regard to the authoritarian thesis, the Mexican authoritarian state has demonstrated some crucial distinctions, especially between popular and elite sectors. The incorporation of the popular sector groups has closely fit the characteristics of authoritarianism, but the elite sectors have operated fairly independently of state controls, and the government has employed incentives or inducements to try to win their cooperation. In short, industrialists have performed important functions, not only in accumulating capital and organizing economic enterprises but also by bringing together the forces of social change. Industrial entrepreneurs have emerged as a major force influencing the politics of growth, and the public policy arena has become a primary focus of attention for industrialists since the end of World War II.
