Book excerpt: Abstract: Transportation plays a large part in day to day life by transporting goods from one location to another and giving people a means of arriving to their destination, such as work, school, vacation, and other places of interest. The economy and sustainability of a society is dependent upon its transportation infrastructure network. Transportation modes can also have a large impact on air quality, public health, and public safety on society as well. If local and regional transportation infrastructures are not timely maintained and traffic volumes exceed system capacity limits, the economic development and quality of life could be adversely affected. Accurate and timely collections of traffic attributes are necessary for performance evaluation of transportation systems. Economical and efficient ways of collecting, assessing, and producing accurate traffic data are needed, such as remote sensing techniques, real-time video surveillance, and geospatial analysis. The primary focus of this thesis was to collect and analyze traffic data in a rural area and a megacity to assess transportation system performance and impacts of traffic demand on travel time, safety, and vehicle emissions. The research was accomplished by using traditional onsite traffic volumes, analyze congestion and assess air quality impacts. Traffic flow microsimulation and latest analysis methods were also used to evaluate performance of roadway junction alternatives using traffic flow, crash data, and vehicle emissions. The techniques discussed in this thesis are applied to two specific site studies: Oxford, MS and Karachi, Pakistan. The results for Oxford roundabout study showed significant improvement in traffic flow, crash reduction, reduction in vehicle emissions. For example, the conversion of two stop controlled intersections to two roundabout junctions reduced average vehicle idling time by one fourth, and the mean speed increased by 50 percent. Imagery based traffic volume data from 40 road locations in Karachi, Pakistan were statistically analyzed. The results indicated that the average daily traffic volume was affected significantly by road classification and area of the city (inner city versus outskirts). The 2007 estimated daily traffic volume for the entire megacity was 9.3 million vehicles, which produced about 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide on a typical day. Most major and multilane roads are experiencing levels of service (LOS) of D or worse. The traffic congestion is adversely affecting travel times, productivity, and air quality.
