Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Experiments in Mental Tests This book is an attempt to provide, in a manner readily comprehensible to all those interested in the subject, an answer to some of the more important questions that have been asked as to the nature, validity, and methods of application of mental tests, and the conclusions to be drawn there-from. It is not an attempt to theorize, but to illustrate general principles on a strictly empirical and experimental basis, and it is hoped that all who follow developments in education and in psychology may find some points of interest in it. The experiment described in the second part of Chapter V was carried out in the county of Northumberland. The note at the end of Chapter IV was published in The British Journal of Psychology (April 1922), and I am grateful to the Editor for permission to include it in this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mental and Physical Tests: A Book of Directions Compiled, With Special Reference to the Experimental, Study of School Children in the Laboratory or Classroom In the introductory sections of the volume, I have sought to show the general purposes of mental tests, to lay down rules for their conduct, and to explain the methods of treating data. In this connection I discuss the calculation of measures of general tendency, measures of variability, indexes of correlation, and other statistical constants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychological Methods of Testing Intelligence The Objection is Often made that the problem Of intellectual diagnosis can in no way be successfully dealt with until we have exact knowledge Of the gen eral nature Of intelligence itself. But this Objection does not seem to me pertinent. In science there is no such precise sequence Of the different research prob lems. We measure electro-motive force without knowing what electricity is, and we diagnose with very delicate test methods many diseases the real nature of which we know as yet very little. Indeed, it may be asserted, quite on the contrary, that prog ress in testing intelligence may Shed light from a new angle upon the theoretical study Of intelligence and thus supplement the psychology Of thinking in a valuable manner. If it turns out, for Instance, that certain symptoms are relevant and others irrelevant for the differentiation Of the intelligence shown by different persons; if, again, one series of these symp toms exhibit a high degree, another series a less de gree of intercorrelation, then our knowledge Of the structure Of intelligence must thereby be little by lit tle increased, and thus there will develop a fruitful reciprocity between the two phases Of investigation, theoretical and applied. Naturally, we cannot begin our work without a pre liminary definition Of intelligence, however pro visional it may be. And this definition must be neither too broad nor too narrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical survey course in psychology has time for only limited presentation of the research on which our knowledge is based. As a result, many students come away with a limited understanding of the role of experiments in psychological science. Where do experiments come from and how are they conducted? What are the pitfalls and how can we avoid them? What advantages do they have over intuition, authority, and common sense as guides to knowing and acting? What distinguishes research-based psychology from psychobabble? What have we learned from experimentation in psychology? This book presents, in more depth than textbook treatment permits, the background, conduct, and implications of a selection of classic experiments in psychology. The selection is designed to be diverse, showing that even for research in vastly different areas of study, the logic of research remains the sameā€”as do its traps and pitfalls. This book will broaden and deepen the understanding of experimental methods in psychological research, examining where the research questions come from, how questions can be turned into experiments, and how researchers have faced the problems presented by research in psychology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychological Monographs, And, Association Tests: Being a Part of the Report of the Committee of the American Psychological Association on the Standardizing of Procedure in Experimental Tests The present paper forms part of the report of a Committee of the American Psychological Association, appointed in 1906. "to act as a general control committee on the subject of measurements." The Committee consists of Professor James R. Angell, chairman, and Professors Judd, Pillsbury, Seashore and Woodworth. This Committee was authorized to organize sub-committees and to secure the assistance of other members of the Association. A sub-committee on association tests was appointed, consisting of the present authors, and the present paper, the report of this sub-committee, is to be regarded as a supplement to the "Report of the Committee of the American Psychological Association on the Standardizing of Procedure in Experimental Tests," published in 1910 as No. 53 of the Psychological Monographs. The Association entrusted to its Committee two general lines of work: "first, the determination of a series of group and individual tests, with reference to practical application, and second, the determination of standard experiments of a more technical character." The sub-committee on association tests has confined itself to the first of these two lines of work. Leaving aside the more elaborate procedure, with chronoscope and lip key, we have fixed our attention on the "tests" so frequently employed in individual and pathological psychology for determining the speed and quality of association. Tests are needed which shall not require elaborate apparatus nor the expenditure of much time on the part of the individual tested. Many such tests are in use; these we have attempted to sift and, where possible, improve. The manner of giving the tests lias varied from one experimenter to another; and we have attempted to ascertain the advantages and defects of the different procedures, and to make recommendations accordingly. In correlation it need only be borne in mind that we are using an accepted method to estimate the relative necessary relations between the phenomena under con sideration. To make any such comparison at all we must assign our results a place in a scale of values. This is what the method of correlation does. Book excerpt: This classic volume outlines, for both students and professionals, the mathematical theories and equations that are necessary for evaluating a test and for quantifying its characteristics. The author utilizes formulas that evaluate both the reliability and the validity of tests. He also provides the means for evaluating the reliability and validity of total test scores and individual item analysis. The work remains one of the only books on classical test theory to discuss applications, "true score" theory, the effect of test length on reliability and validity, and the effects of univariate and multivariate selection on validity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Individual Mental Tests and Testing Mental testing requires no justification; the rapid growth of belief in its value has in many ways proved to be well warranted. However, at the present time, two great needs appear: First, to combat the uncritical acceptance of very narrow and simple measurements as offering adequate criteria for judgment of mental capacities. Extraordinary assumptions are constantly made on the slender basis of some numerical statement, sup posed to symbolize an individual's mental ability in toto. And, second, as a correlate to this, there is great urgency for utiliza tion of a much wider range of tests that the human individual may be better known in regard to his various mental capacities, in order to relate his abilities to his possible social, educational, vocational adjustments and achievements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mental and Physical Tests, Vol. 1: Simpler Processes; A Book of Directions Compiled With Special Reference to the Experimental Study of School Children in the Laboratory or Classroom One need not be a close observer to perceive how markedly the interest in mental tests has developed during the past few years. Not very long ago attention to tests was largely restricted to a few laboratory psychologists; now tests have become objects of attention for many workers whose primary interest is in education, social service, medicine, industrial management and many other fields in which applied psychology promises valuable returns. It is a source of gratification to me that this book has been a positive factor in furthering this development of mental tests, and that it has found sufficient favor, both with academic investigators and teachers and with those engaged in the immediately practical task of mental examination, to exhaust the first edition in an unexpectedly short time. Opportunity has been taken of this necessity for a new edition to make extensive revision and alterations in the text. The attempt has been made to eliminate a number of confusing typographical errors; a new and better system of abbreviations for titles of periodicals has been introduced; the directions for conducting the tests have been modified where ambiguity was feIt would have been quite difficult for me to have undertaken to improve the text had I not received valuable assistance from many of my colleagues and co-workers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mental and Physical Tests, Vol. 2 of 2: Complex Processes; A Book of Directions Compiled With Special Reference to the Experimental Study of School Children in the Laboratory or Classroom If it be not thought bad form to preface a \olnme an apology, I should like to ask the indulgence of those of an readers who have been so complimentary as to express to the publishers and to me their irritation at this delay of two years or more in the completion of the revised second edition of the Jlunual. The truth is, that the unexpected exhaustion of the first edition of the book found me quite unprepared to rewrite the text at short notice, and that the whole subject of mental tests had meanwhile so expanded as to present a task of no small magnitude to one who would seek to deal at all z'idet'luatelt with the material that had become available.
