Book excerpt: The exponential increase in the use of MCMC methods and the corre sponding applications in domains of even higher complexity have caused a growing concern about the available convergence assessment methods and the realization that some of these methods were not reliable enough for all-purpose analyses. Some researchers have mainly focussed on the con vergence to stationarity and the estimation of rates of convergence, in rela tion with the eigenvalues of the transition kernel. This monograph adopts a different perspective by developing (supposedly) practical devices to assess the mixing behaviour of the chain under study and, more particularly, it proposes methods based on finite (state space) Markov chains which are obtained either through a discretization of the original Markov chain or through a duality principle relating a continuous state space Markov chain to another finite Markov chain, as in missing data or latent variable models. The motivation for the choice of finite state spaces is that, although the resulting control is cruder, in the sense that it can often monitor con vergence for the discretized version alone, it is also much stricter than alternative methods, since the tools available for finite Markov chains are universal and the resulting transition matrix can be estimated more accu rately. Moreover, while some setups impose a fixed finite state space, other allow for possible refinements in the discretization level and for consecutive improvements in the convergence monitoring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of eight Case Studies in Data Analysis that appeared in various issues of the Canadian Journal of Statistics (OS) over a twelve year period from 1982 to 1993. One follow-up article to Case Study No.4 is also included in the volume. The OS's Section on Case Studies in Data Analysis was initiated by a former editor who wanted to increase the analytical content of the journal. We were asked to become Section Co-Editors and to develop a format for the case studies. Each case study presents analyses of a real data set by two or more analysts or teams of analysts working independently in a simulated consulting context. The section aimed at demonstrating the process of statistical analysis and the possible diversity of approaches and conclusions. For each case study, the Co-Editors found a set of real Canadian data, posed what they thought was an interesting statistical problem, and recruited analysts working in Canada who were willing to tackle it. The published case studies describe the data and the problem, and present and discuss the analysts' solutions. For some case studies, the providers of the data were invited to contribute their own analysis.

Challenging imaging problems arise and they often trigger the investigation of fundamental problems in various branches of mathematics. This is the first book to highlight the most recent mathematical developments in emerging biomedical imaging techniques. The main focus is on emerging multi-physics and multi-scales imaging approaches. For such promising techniques, it provides the basic mathematical concepts and tools for image reconstruction. Further improvements in these exciting imaging techniques require continued research in the mathematical sciences, a field that has contributed greatly to biomedical imaging and will continue to do so. The volume is suitable for a graduate-level course in applied mathematics and helps prepare the reader for a deeper understanding of research areas in biomedical imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Table des matières : 1. Les premiers pas de la régression. 2. Les estimateurs à noyaux. 3. Fonctions orthogonales. 4. Noyaux auto-reproduisants à base d’ondelettes. 5. Fonctions splines. 6. 13. La modélisation des courbes de croissance. 14. Modèles à direction révélatrice unique : application en économie.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Fifth Franco-Belgian Meeting of Statisticians, held in Luminy-Marseille (France) on November 23-24, 1984. The diversity of these papers reflects the broadness of the topic of the meeting : the asymptotic theory for non i.i.d. processes. First of all, asymptotic theory is focused on various types of convergence : almost sure convergence, convergence in distribution and convergence in variation. In an other direction, relaxing the hypothesis of i.i.d. processes leads to consider a large variety of situations, characterized either by hypotheses on the marginal model (i.e. after integration with respect to parameters or exogenous variables) such as stationarity, exchangeability of Markovian property or by assumptions on the model conditionally on exogenoous variables. The main tools used in such situations are martingale theory and the ergodic theorem. They may be applied in various situations such as posterior expectations in Bayesian analysis, rational expectations, generalized residuals and mixing conditions in conditional models or predictions in nonstationary q-dependent processes. All the above concepts are met both theoretically and through applications in the present volume.
