Book excerpt: Les effluents de station d'épuration (STEP) se déversent continuellement dans les cours d'eau à l'aval des agglomérations. Si les effets des effluents dus aux matières organique et minérale sont relativement bien connus, on s'interroge encore sur l'impact des micropolluants. Pour caractériser l'impact d'un effluent de STEP, nous avons choisi une approche intégrée, combinant des analyses chimiques et des mesures biologiques sur les invertébrés et les poissons telles que des études de structure des communautés où l'utilisation de marqueurs morphologiques, physiologiques ou biochimiques. Les études in situ utilisées conjointement avec les mesures en conditions contrôlées nous ont permis de proposer un lien de cause à effet entre les potentialités toxiques d'un effluent et les perturbations observées sur l'écosystème. Un profil analytique et toxicologique de l'impact des effluents de STEP s'est dégagé de notre étude sur trois cours d'eau. Par les mesures in situ, nous avons mis en évidence l'impact de perturbations annexes et notamment de la pollution apportée par les déversoirs d'orage places sur le réseau d'assainissement et rejetant en amont de la STEP. Ce premier travail a confirmé l'importance des variations de l'impact des effluents de STEP et nous a conduit à prendre en compte le facteur temps sur un seul site d'étude. Grâce à l'utilisation de nombreuses méthodes, nous avons pu préciser l'impact d'un effluent. Des perturbations au niveau de la communauté d'invertébrés benthiques ont été mises en évidence et des relations ont pu être établies entre la présence de quelques contaminants et les effets constates. De plus, nous avons observé que l'impact le plus important, mesure en été, ne s'explique pas uniquement par une concentration plus élevée de l'effluent dans la rivière. Nous avons classé nos méthodes selon leur pouvoir de discrimination de l'effet mais aussi selon leur pertinence écologique, leur capacité à identifier les agents polluants et leur simplicité d'utilisation. De plus, grâce à notre classement des méthodes, nous proposons une démarche intégrée opérationnelle d'évaluation de l'impact d'un effluent de STEP qui combine la mesure d'un indice biologique global, le test de toxicité chronique sur cériodaphnie et la mesure de la concentration en ammonium.

Book excerpt: Afin de preserver les ressources en eau, le developpement de procedes qui permettent le traitement combine du carbone, de l'azote et du phosphore est necessaire. Dans ce but, les procedes biologiques sont largement utilises. La qualite et la quantite de la matiere organique de l'effluent ont une influence sur les performances de ces procedes. En effet, les bacteries denitrifiantes et dephosphatantes ont besoins d'une fraction de la matiere organique dite rapidement biodegradable. L'optimisation des performances demande la caracterisation de cette fraction. Ce travail propose le developpement de trois methodes de caracterisation. La premiere methode utilise un reacteur aere avec une biomasse en suspension. La consommation d'oxygene dissous est suivie et les donnees sont interpretees en utilisant un protocole d'estimation de parametres. Cette methode permet l'evaluation qualitative et quantitative de la matiere organique. Cependant, la precision des resultats depend du choix des parametres cinetiques et stchiometriques utilises. La deuxieme methode evalue la matiere organique a partir de la cinetique de denitrification d'un systeme a biomasse fixee. Une procedure discontinue et une procedure en continu ont ete testees. A ce stade, la methode en continu peut etre utilisee comme base pour le developpement d'un outil industriel en vue d'une utilisation sur le terrain. La troisieme methode evalue la matiere organique a partir de la cinetique de relargage du phosphore, dans un systeme a biomasse fixee. L'effluent est mis en contact avec la biomasse dans un systeme discontinu. Une equation de premier ordre est proposee pour decrire la cinetique de relargage du phosphore. La valeur de la constante de premier ordre est obtenue par estimation de parametres en utilisant les donnees de concentration en phosphate. Cette constante est utilisee comme parametre d'evaluation de la qualite de la matiere organique.

Book excerpt: L’objectif de cette étude est de permettre aux acteurs, devant faire face à des marées noires, de pouvoir choisir les traitements les mieux adaptés aux déchets produits. Pour cela, une méthodologie d’évaluation est réalisée et propose : une caractérisation chimique du polluant au cours du traitement par GCMS et HPLC, puis une évaluation de sa biodégradabilité (test Sturm), une évaluation de l’écotoxicité et de la génotoxicité des résidus de traitement (LUMIStox, ARTOXKIT et Ames), une caractérisation des COV produits au cours de la biodégradation , et une évaluation du profil bactérien du consortium utilisé lors du procédé (Biolog EcoPlate). Les résultats obtenus à l’échelle du laboratoire montrent 16% de biodégradation pour le DEPOL seul. Le test de Sturm ne s’avère pas adapté pour les déchets organiques autres que le polluant à tester et est moins adapté au sable qui contient des carbonates. Puis une plate-forme a été mise en œuvre afin d’ajuster la méthodologie d’évaluation sur un bioprocédé de dépollution de sable marin souillé par le même pétrole (1/10 biopile). Aucune mutagénicité n’a été détectée et une forte toxicité aiguë apparaît très rapidement dans les lixiviats, probablement due à des problèmes de diffusion de l’oxygène. La diversité microbienne diminue dans les lixiviats et le bassin d’aération et augmente dans le sable. Quelques COV ont pu être identifiés par GCMS. Les alcanes et les aromatiques dans le sable sont dégradés en 3 semaines de traitement tandis que les alcanes dans les lixiviats sont dégradés moins rapidement. En conclusion, les lixiviats, présentant une forte toxicité, sont à prendre en compte lors d’un traitement par voie biologique.
