Book excerpt: An exact solution of the problem of designing an airfoil with a prescribed velocity distribution on the suction surface in a given uniform flow of an incompressible perfect liquid is obtained by replacing the boundary of the airfoil by vortices. By this device, a method of solution is developed, which is applicable both to isolated airfoils and to airfoils in cascade. The conformal transformation of the designed airfoil into a circle can then be obtained and the velocity distribution at any angle of attack computed. Numerical illustrations of the method are given for the airfoil in cascade.

Book excerpt: The inverse problem of airfoil theory, i.e., from a given surface velocity distribution determine the airfoil shape, is solved by conformal mapping procedures. The method is based upon prior works by Arlinger, which in turn is an extension of Lighthill's basic development. It involves the use of least squares and Lagrangian multipliers to modify the prescribed velocity distribution along a portion of the lower surface of the airfoil, thus ensuring that the modifications required for profile closure are minimized. The method developed should be of particular importance for calculating the shapes of new types of airfoils with high design lift coefficients. (Author Modified Abstract).

Book excerpt: The aerodynamic forces and moments exerted on pitched and yawed wing-body combinations consisting of a slender body of revolution and a cruciform arrangement of thin wings have been investigated by two theoretical methods. One method, an extension of the slender wing-body theory of NACA TN No. 1662, makes possible the determination of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, of simple closed expressions for the load distribution, the forces, and the moments for slender cruciform-wing and body combinations in which the wings may be dissimilar plan form. The second method treats cruciform-wing and body combinations consisting of a body of revolution and identical wings of arbitrary aspect ratio and plan form. The results are valid at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds.
