Book excerpt: An off-design axial-flow compressor code is presented and is available from COSMIC for predicting the aerodynamic performance maps of fans and compressors. Steady axisymmetric flow is assumed and the aerodynamic solution reduces to solving the two-dimensional flow field in the meridional plane. A streamline curvature method is used for calculating this flow-field outside the blade rows. This code allows for bleed flows and the first five stators can be reset for each rotational speed, capabilities which are necessary for large multistage compressors. The accuracy of the off-design performance predictions depend upon the validity of the flow loss and deviation correlation models. These empirical correlations for the flow loss and deviation are used to model the real flow effects and the off-design code will compute through small reverse flow regions. The input to this off-design code is fully described and a user's example case for a two-stage fan is included with complete input and output data sets. Also, a comparison of the off-design code predictions with experimental data is included which generally shows good agreement. Schmidt, James F. Unspecified Center...

Book excerpt: The increasing use of renewable energy sources necessitates power-generating gas turbines capable of frequently and rapidly starting up to supplement the energy supply when renewable sources alone cannot meet demand [1], [21. This makes the off-design performance of such gas turbines more important as they spend more of their operational life off the design point. Currently off-design performance cannot be estimated with high fidelity until late in the gas turbine compressor design process at which point the design is largely fixed and only limited changes can be made. This thesis presents a Non-Uniform Radial Meanline method for multistage axial compressor off-design performance estimation, capturing the transfer of radial flow non-uniformity and its impact on compressor blade row performance. This method enables the high-fidelity characterization of blade row performance and the stage matching of multistage compressors with non-uniformity effects included. A new representation of non-uniform radial flow profiles using orthonormal basis functions was developed to provide a compact representation suitable for inclusion in a one-dimensional performance estimation method. The link between radial flow non-uniformity and compressor blade row performance was characterized using three-dimensional embedded stage calculations. An initial implementation of the Non-Uniform Radial Meanline method was demonstrated for different compressor inlet non-uniformities. The computations show that the new approach provides an effective means of incorporating radial flow non-uniformity into a one-dimensional compressor performance estimation method.

Drawing upon an extensive theoretical background and years of practical experience, the authors provide descriptions of applications, concepts, component design, analysis tools, performance maps, flow stability, and structural integrity, with illustrative examples. Features wide coverage of all types of radial compressor over many applications unified by the consistent use of dimensional analysis. Discusses the methods needed to analyse the performance, flow, and mechanical integrity that underpin the design of efficient centrifugal compressors with good flow range and stability. Includes explanation of the design of all radial compressor components, including inlet guide vanes, impellers, diffusers, volutes, return channels, de-swirl vanes and side-streams. Suitable as a reference for advanced students of turbomachinery, and a perfect tool for practising mechanical and aerospace engineers already within the field and those just entering it.

It describes the basic fluid dynamic and thermodynamic principles, empirical models and numerical methods used for the full range of procedures and analytical tools that an engineer needs for virtually any tupe of Axial-Flow Compressor, aerodynamic design or analysis activity. It reviews and evaluates several design strategies that have been recommended in the literature or which have been found to be effective. It gives a complete description of an actual working system, such that readers can implement all or part of the system. Engineers responsible for developing, maintaining of improving design and analysis systems can benefit greatly from this type of reference. The technology has become so complex and the role of computers so pervasive that about the only way this can be done today is to concentrate on a specific design and analysis system. The author provides practical methodology as well as the details needed to implement the suggested procedures.

Book excerpt: A six-stage axial-flow compressor with a tip speed of 550 feet per second and a flat operating characteristics at constant speed has been designed and tested. It was designed for a constant power input per pound of flow in expectation that this would result in a wider mass-flow operating range at a given stagnation-presssure ratio. The design specific weight flow was 21.3 pounds per second per square foot of frontal area at atmospheric discharge with a stagnation-pressure ratio of 3.25 and an inlet hub-tip radius ratio of 0.7. Several configurations consisting of various blade setting angles and solidities were tested. Tests showed that the design flow, pressure ratio, and flat operating characteristic were obtained over a range of 10 percent of design flow at a peak efficiency of 82 percent for design conditions. The compressor had a possible immediate application for air removal from a large slotted-throat transonic wind tunnel, but the design theory could apply to any low-speed industrial compressor or second spool of a turbojet engine.

Book excerpt: This paper describes a method to estimate key aerodynamic parameters of single and multistage axial and centrifugal compressors. This mean-line compressor code COMDES provides the capability of sizing single and multistage compressors quickly during the conceptual design process. Based on the compressible fluid flow equations and the Euler equation, the code can estimate rotor inlet and exit blade angles when run in the design mode. The design point rotor efficiency and stator losses are inputs to the code, and are modeled at off design. When run in the off-design analysis mode, it can be used to generate performance maps based on simple models for losses due to rotor incidence and inlet guide vane reset angle. The code can provide an improved understanding of basic aerodynamic parameters such as diffusion factor, loading levels and incidence, when matching multistage compressor blade rows at design and at part-speed operation. Rotor loading levels and relative velocity ratio are correlated to the onset of compressor surge. NASA Stage 37 and the three-stage NASA 74-A axial compressors were analyzed and the results compared to test data. The code has been used to generate the performance map for the NASA 76-B three-stage axial compressor featuring variable geometry. The compressor stages were aerodynamically matched at off-design speeds by adjusting the variable inlet guide vane and variable stator geometry angles to control the rotor diffusion factor and incidence angles.
