Book excerpt: Despite being perhaps the foremost British meteorologist of the twentieth century, Reginald Sutcliffe has been understudied and underappreciated. His impact continues to this day every time you check the weather forecast. Reginald Sutcliffe and the Invention of Modern Weather Systems Science not only details Sutcliffe’s life and ideas, but it also illuminates the impact of social movements and the larger forces that propelled him on his consequential trajectory. Less than a century ago, a forecast of the weather tomorrow was considered a practical impossibility. This book makes the case that three important advances guided the development of modern dynamic meteorology, which led directly to the astounding progress in weather forecasting—and that Sutcliffe was the pioneer in all three of these foundational developments: the application of the quasi-geostrophic simplification to the equations governing atmospheric behavior, adoption of pressure as the vertical coordinate in analysis, and development of a diagnostic equation for vertical air motions. Shining a light on Sutcliffe’s life and work will, hopefully, inspire a renewed appreciation for the human dimension in scientific progress and the rich legacy bequeathed to societies wise enough to fully embrace investments in education and basic research. As climate change continues to grow more dire, modern extensions of Sutcliffe’s innovations increasingly offer some of the best tools we have for peering into the long-term future of our environment.

Book excerpt: Part of the excitement in boundary-layer meteorology is the challenge associated with turbulent flow - one of the unsolved problems in classical physics. An additional attraction of the filed is the rich diversity of topics and research methods that are collected under the umbrella-term of boundary-layer meteorology. The flavor of the challenges and the excitement associated with the study of the atmospheric boundary layer are captured in this textbook. Fundamental concepts and mathematics are presented prior to their use, physical interpretations of the terms in equations are given, sample data are shown, examples are solved, and exercises are included. The work should also be considered as a major reference and as a review of the literature, since it includes tables of parameterizatlons, procedures, filed experiments, useful constants, and graphs of various phenomena under a variety of conditions. It is assumed that the work will be used at the beginning graduate level for students with an undergraduate background in meteorology, but the author envisions, and has catered for, a heterogeneity in the background and experience of his readers.

Book excerpt: A lively, inspiring account of the pioneers who sought toaccurately predict the weather Benjamin Franklin . . . James P. Espy . . . Cleveland Abbe . . .Carl-Gustaf Rossby . . . Jule G. Charney . . . just a few of theremarkable individuals who struggled against formidable odds tounderstand the atmosphere and predict the weather. Where they sawpatterns and processes, others saw randomness and tumult-and yetthey strove to make their voices heard, often saving lives in theprocess. Storm Watchers takes you on a fascinating journey through time thatcaptures the evolution of weather forecasting. From the age whenmeteorology was considered one step removed from sorcery to themodern-day wizardry of supercomputers, John Cox introduces you tothe pioneering scientists whose work fulfilled an ancient dream andmade it possible to foretell the future. He tells the little-knownstories of these weathermen, such as Ptolemy's weather predictionsbased on astrology, John Finley's breakthrough research inidentifying tornadoes, and Tor Bergeron's new techniques of weatherforecasting, which contributed to its final worldwideacceptance. Filled with extraordinary tales of bravery and sacrifice, StormWatchers will make you think twice the next time you turn on thelocal news to catch the weather report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITION When, in 1967, the Meteorological glossary came under consideration for reprinting, it was decided to ask Dr McIntosh to undertake a revised edition, with cooperation from within the Meteorological Office. The opportunity has been taken in this edition, to delete some terms which are considered no longer appropriate, and to include various new entries and revisions which stem from recent advances and practice. Units of the Systeme International have been adopted in this edition. In some cases, however, the traditional British or metric units are also included because of existing World Meteorological Organization recommendations and for the convenience of user interests during the period before complete national and international adoption of SI units. Meteorological Office, 1970. PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION In 1916, during the directorship of Sir Napier Shaw, the Meteorological Office published two pocket-size companion volumes, the 'Weather map' to explain how weather maps were prepared and used by the forecasters, and the 'Meteorological glossary' to explain the technical meteorological terms then employed. With the advance of the science and the elaboration of its techniques the publications have been in continuous demand, many times reprinted and on several occasions completely revised. The second edition was in 1930, the third in 1938-39, and soon after World War II it was obvious that radical revision was necessary once again. In 1956 the fourth edition of the 'Weather map' was issued but, for the first time in forty years, it was not found possible to prepare simultaneously a new edition of the 'Meteorological glossary' which had become very much out-of-date and in need of a complete remodeling. For earlier editions the task had been shared amongst the professional staff of the Office and the result was an interesting and up-to-date volume containing much useful information, although the freedom allowed to the many contributors had led to a unique volume of quite uneven character with articles varying from brief dictionary definitions to encyclopedic essays. For the fourth edition the number of new entries was to be larger than ever before and it was decided that the need was now for a more systematic reference work containing a brief definition of all the terms in ordinary use rather than for a compilation of miscellaneous articles giving information which would more properly be looked for in one of the many modern textbooks. For this purpose a single author, assisted if need be by expert referees, would, it seemed, be advantageous and the Office was fortunate in finding in Dr D. H. McIntosh of the University of Edinburgh a physicist and meteorologist of wide experience willing to undertake the major task. Before being passed for printing every article has been read critically by more than one member of the scientific staff of the Office and Dr. McIntosh has shown a remarkable readiness to compromise. In this way it is hoped that the excellence of the author's original draft has been fully retained while providing a work which will adequately meet the needs of the official service. It would, however, be too much to hope that no further improvement will be possible and the Office will be pleased to receive from any source criticisms and suggestions calculated to increase the value of the work, not only for the professional meteorologist, but for interested people everywhere. Meteorological Office, 1962.

Book excerpt: Applied Climatology: A Study of Atmospheric Resources focuses on the management of the atmosphere as a resource. The book first discusses the atmospheric system, including atmospheric circulation and energy in the system. The text then examines the variable atmosphere. Scale variability, climatic change, air pollution, and hazards and extremes are considered. The book also focuses on weather and human behavior. Human biometeorology and climatic determinism; climate and comfort; weather and society; and climate and health are discussed. The text also describes the impacts of extreme events, including tropical cyclones, local storms, cumulative hazards, and climatic change and world food production. The selection also focuses on the effects of weather on daily human activities, including leisure and recreation, construction industry, retailing, utilities, and agriculture. The text then highlights weather forecasting and management of atmospheric resources. Types and methods of forecasting; accuracy and reliability of forecasts; dissemination and application of weather forecasts; weather and climate modification; and role of meteorologists are discussed. The book is a good source of information for readers interested to study the atmosphere as a resource.
