Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document, the product of extensive literature research, provides a single and comprehensive reference text for the operational forecaster in the Arabian Sea and Gulfs of Aden and Oman. It contains extensive climatological information, descriptions of significant meteorological phenomena and relevant forecasting aids, discussions of meteorological conditions affecting various regional ports, and a representative assortment of typical weather sequences depicted by both satellite imagery and conventional data. General information on the large-scale Asian monsoon and its relationship to the Arabian Sea region is presented. Also discussed are the significant meteorological phenomena associated with time and space variations in the Arabian Sea monsoon; forecasting aids and typical weather sequences are provided. Seasonal progressions of weather events are discussed; variations from normal conditions are described in first-hand reports from observers in the field. (Author).
Book Synopsis Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change by : Yassine Charabi
Download or read book Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change written by Yassine Charabi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical cyclones are topic that is not appropriately known to the public at large, but climate change has been on the public’s mind since the last decade and a concern that has peaked in the new millennium. Like the television programs of Jean Yves Cousteau the ‘plight of the oceans’, have recent documentaries nurtured a conscio- ness that major climatological changes are in the offing, even have started to develop. The retreat of glaciers on mountain tops and in Polar Regions is ‘being seen’ on ‘the small screen’ and has favored an environmental awareness in all populations that are enjoying an average well-being on Planet Earth. The vivid images on screen of storms, floods, and tsunamis share the fear provoking landscapes of deforestation, desertification and the like. Watching such as this one is seen are voices warning of what over is ‘in store’ if the causative problems are not remedied. Talking and d- cussing are useful, but action must follow. Understanding the full ramifications of climate change on tropical cyclones is a task that will takes several decades. In Climate Change 2007, the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) a high probability of major changes in tropical cyclone activity across the various ocean basins is highlighted.

Book Synopsis Monsoon Dynamics by : James Lighthill
Download or read book Monsoon Dynamics written by James Lighthill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-03-19 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a survey of our state of knowledge of the physical and dynamical processes involved in the Asian monsoon. Although traditionally the main emphasis has been on the study of the atmospheric component, it has long been known that the oceans play a vitally important part in determining the occurrence of this spectacular seasonal event. A scientific study of this phenomenon involves a detailed investigation of the dynamical processes which occur in both the atmosphere and the ocean, on timescales on up to at least a year and on spatial scales from a few hundred kilometres or so up to that of the global atmospheric and oceanic circulations. The editors present a coherent survey of each of the meteorological, oceanographic and hydrological aspects and of their implications for weather forecasting and flood prediction. Monsoon Dynamics is a timely survey of a dramatic meteorological phenomenon which will interest meteorologists, climatologists and geophysicists.
Book Synopsis Western Disturbances - An Indian Meteorological Perspective by : A.P. Dimri
Download or read book Western Disturbances - An Indian Meteorological Perspective written by A.P. Dimri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the meteorological phenomenon known as Western Disturbances (WDs) and traces their influence on the Indian subcontinent. It fully details the unique characteristics and dynamics of these disturbances, which produce large-scale instabilities in the atmosphere over northern India due to the orographic influence of the Himalayas. The authors first present a definition of the phenomenon and then go on to detail their structure and migration. Topics include dynamics, energetics and thermodynamics; modelling studies; land-use and land-cover interactions; and WDs in the changing climate. In addition, coverage outlines how WDs interact with and influence other weather systems throughout the four seasons of Indian climate: winter, pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon. It places special emphasis on wintertime dynamics since WDs significantly contribute to the precipitation in India during this time. The authors explain why this period should be termed "Indian winter monsoon" and differentiate it from the northeast monsoon which so far is the prevalent term used in the region's meteorological parlance. Complete with detailed illustrations and case studies, this monograph will help researchers and students gain a fundamental understanding of these important storms. This knowledge is essential not only for short–term and seasonal hydrometeorological forecasting but also for the assessment of regional climate change and its impacts.

Book Synopsis High-Impact Weather Events over the SAARC Region by : Kamaljit Ray
Download or read book High-Impact Weather Events over the SAARC Region written by Kamaljit Ray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of papers contributed by researchers and scientists from SAARC nations and deals with high-impact weather conditions, their prediction and potential consequences for populations in the SAARC region. There have been a number of recent advances in our understanding and prediction of cyclones, severe thunderstorms, squalls, heat and cold waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, based on the latest observational data and NWP modeling platform. The SAARC region is vulnerable to high-impact weather events because of geophysical features like high mountains, plateaus and vast oceans. As our climate continues to change over the coming years, the likelihood of extreme and potentially high-impact weather and climate events will be at its highest when natural and anthropogenic effects combine. All chapters were written by leading experts in their respective research and operational fields. The book reviews the latest research, future needs, forecasting skills and societal impacts of extreme weather events and offers high-quality reference material for weather forecasters, disaster managers and researchers.

Book Synopsis Natural Decadal Climate Variability by : Vikram M. Mehta
Download or read book Natural Decadal Climate Variability written by Vikram M. Mehta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Decadal Climate Variability: Societal Impacts is an important work for understanding the natural decadal climate variability (DCV), a phenomenon which has made long lasting impacts on civilizations, especially on water availability and agriculture. This book comprehensively covers multiyear to decadal variations in instrument measured precipitation and temperature, water availability and river flows, crop production, agricultural irrigation, inland water-borne transportation, hydroelectricity generation, and fish and crustacean captures since the 1960s. A longer term perspective is provided with the use of multi-century data on dry and wet epochs based on tree ring information, and corroborating evidence from other literature. This valuable work will benefit climate scientists, meteorologists, hydrologists, agronomists, water transportation planners, resource economists, policymakers, professors, and graduate students and anyone else who has an interest in learning how natural climate phenomena has influenced societies for at least the past 1000 years.
