Download or read book Ficino, Pico and Savonarola written by Amos Edelheit and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a study of humanism, theology, and politics in Florence during the last decades of the fifteenth century. It considers the relations between humanists and theologians and between humanism and religion. Modern scholarship on humanism has not taken sufficient account of the deep interest shown by Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494) in theology and religion. This book presents a detailed and innovative account of Ficino’s De Christiana religione (1474) and of Pico’s Apologia (1487), in the context of explaining the evolution of a humanist theology. The book ends with a consideration of the stormy events of the 1490s, when Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) became a leading spiritual and political figure in Florentine public life.

Book Synopsis The Semantics of Analogy by : Joshua P. Hochschild
Download or read book The Semantics of Analogy written by Joshua P. Hochschild and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A reassessment of Cajetan's work on analogy is long overdue. As Joshua Hochschild shows, Cajetan's admirable and lucid little treatise on the topic deserves to be understood in its own right. Hochschild presents it to us convincingly as a treatise in which Cajetan focuses on a properly semantic question regarding the need for some common ratio in syllogistic reasoning (if such reasoning is to be saved from fallacies of equivocation)."---Philip L. Reynolds, Candler School of Theology, Emory University --
Download or read book Métaphysique d'Ibn Gabirol et de la tradition platonicienne written by Fernand Brunner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in his career, Fernand Brunner became one of the few specialists on Ibn Gabirol, a Jewish philosopher and poet in 11th-century Spain, whose treatise, the Fons vitae, is known only in Latin translation. Brunner showed the coherence of this rarely studied version of Platonism and traced its impact on the scholastic philosophy of the succeeding centuries. His work was guided by a systematic interest in Platonic solutions to such problems as the relations of matter and form, and of God to the world. This volume includes a number of previously unpublished papers, several of which also provide broad expositions of a Platonic ontology. The author makes his reader aware that arguments as well as images must be taken seriously in the attempt to approach the Platonic tradition.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book La mesure de l’être written by Sylvain Roudaut and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to analyze the problem of the intensity of forms in the late Middle Ages and to show how this debate eventually gave rise to a new metaphysical project in the 14th century: the project of quantifying the different types of perfections existing in the universe – that is the project of “measuring being”.

Download or read book Gloses et commentaire du livre XI du Contra Proclum de Jean Philopon written by Pascal Mueller-Jourdan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the Materia Prima is certainly one of the most important challenges of late antique Physics. It is interesting to note that such a difficulty has never been focused on an exhaustive treatise in Antiquity. If the question of the matter resists any investigation, it is because the matter is radically 'aneideos' (without form) even though it is the condition 'sine qua non' of the existence of all forms in the sensible world. The present study proposes the first translation in French of the entire eleventh Book of the Philoponus' Contra Proclum (VIe s.) which precisely discusses the status of the Prime Matter. After having clarified the context of such a question in the Neoplatonic Alexandrian School, it puts forward a detailled step-to-step analysis of the Philoponian argument, the notions used by him and a new general theory which attempts to evaluate the pertinence and the internal coherence of his contribution to this very problematic question.
