Book excerpt: Paused momentarily in our garden to ponder a monarch butterfly, I began thinking about the word metamorphosis. Now at seventy years, it seemed my whole life had been a metamorphosis. It means change in form. The more I thought about it, the more I realized the wonderful design and the grandeur of which leaves one speechless. That butterfly was created by the Great Designer, our God. Can you see the metamorphosis in your own life? My occupation just didn't happen by chance. My faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior was providential ordained, not chance. The greatest metamorphosis in our lives will come at its end, and if one is not a believer in Christ, the mystery will play itself out in eternity. It is my prayer and purpose to labor in the fields ripe for harvest and take you with me when I cross that Jordan River. No one else may be praying for you but having been where you are, we will together journey the metamorphosis of God's world. "Ye must be born again" (John 3:3)!

Book excerpt: Just a few moments before his death, my father looked straight ahead and with a calm voice said to me, 'Almost there!' It has been 20 years since his homeward journey and I have been haunted by those words. What was he seeing that we couldn't see? In my career as a surgeon and a witness for Christ, I have observed many deaths when the last moments were calm and unafraid. Four years as a hospice volunteer brought me even more intimate with those last moments. I think that the valley David wrote of could also represent moments of extreme circumstances in our lives when we are in the Shadow of death: an automobile accident with severe injuries, the sudden loss of a child or spouse, the loss of a career, a consuming fire, a devastating flood, the birth of a stillborn. Do you have the Good Shepherd to guide you through these times? We only have this moment, this breath. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Do you have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding? Are you ready to walk through the valleys of your life? Come with me as I walk through the valley of the hospice and witness the grace and comfort that only God can provide for us. Journey with me and meet my Lord. There will be stops along the way as we see how the world deals with the valley. I pray that this book might be a life changing experience for you as we journey to 'Almost there.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of healing set in the context of a wealthy philanthropist who gathers a dedicated group of Christian faithful to resurrect a dying town by creating a high quality medical center. It is more than the challenges, labor and sacrifice required by this ambitious ten year project. We enter the lives of multiple citizens from this poor and medically underserved area. The rich ebb and flow of their hardships, disappointments, and redemptions is the real meat of the story. Humans, of course, are God's creations, so the reader also finds joy, along with the satisfaction of seeing a main character's hatred and quest for revenge quelled by compassion, reconciliation and love. 1 Corinthians 13:13. — Bill E. Barry MD

Its main characters live, love, and achieve in the ebb and flow of their lives, encountering slights and setbacks, but questing, overcoming, and thriving, to be suddenly stunned""flattened!""by true tragedy. This story explores what happens to people like you and me when we are frightened and vulnerable, staring into the unblinking eyes of terrible fate. It can be difficult to read""we are almost overwhelmed, wanting to cry out, "Oh no!" and flee in terror. Yet, forging on, we are relieved to find fictional friends offering their much-needed support. Then, to our rising joy, the bedrock which keeps us from sinking appears""a robust Christian faith! Trust in our God, and His abundant love provides solace, hope, and guidance, along with unexpected reserves of strength. Cuffed to the ground, both characters and reader arise, regain their footing, and face the changed future with dignity and renewed courage. As the story ends, we forgive the author for forcing us to peer so deeply into the pit and thank him for allowing us to bask in the warm glow of divine love revealed. We are moved to prayer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence. Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist. Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

Book excerpt: Based on exclusive and unrestricted access to more than 5,000 pages of personal writings and family photos, this definitive biography of German physician and SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Josef Mengele (1911-1979) probes the personality and motivations of Auschwitz's "Angel of Death." From May 1943 through January 1945, Mengele selected who would be gassed immediately, who would be worked to death, and who would serve as involuntary guinea pigs for his spurious and ghastly human experiments (twins were Mengele's particular obsession). With authority and insight, Mengele examines the entire life of the world's most infamous doctor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A readable and up-to-date introduction to a most fascinating culture” from a world-renowned Sumerian scholar (American Journal of Archaeology). The Sumerians, the pragmatic and gifted people who preceded the Semites in the land first known as Sumer and later as Babylonia, created what was probably the first high civilization in the history of man, spanning the fifth to the second millenniums B.C. This book is an unparalleled compendium of what is known about them. Professor Kramer communicates his enthusiasm for his subject as he outlines the history of the Sumerian civilization and describes their cities, religion, literature, education, scientific achievements, social structure, and psychology. Finally, he considers the legacy of Sumer to the ancient and modern world. “An uncontested authority on the civilization of Sumer, Professor Kramer writes with grace and urbanity.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: In World History as the History of Foundations, 3000 BCE to 1500 CE, Michael Borgolte investigates the origins and development of foundations from Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. In his survey foundations emerge not as mere legal institutions, but rather as “total social phenomena” which touch upon manifold aspects, including politics, the economy, art and religion of the cultures in which they emerged. Cross-cultural in its approach and the result of decades of research, this work represents by far the most comprehensive account of the history of foundations that has hitherto been published.
