Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallurgy of Copper My aim in preparing this book has been to furnish a treatise on copper which will meet the demands of the metallurgist of to-day. In order to do this, it has been necessary: to present the leading physical and chemical facts about the metal, its alloys, and its compounds which are of metallurgical importance; to record from the older practice that which is of lasting value; and to give the details of the present modes of operating. Though we have several books treating of certain branches of the metallurgy of copper, such as the valuable volumes of Peters, Greenawalt, and others, there does not exist a modern book which covers the entire ground as the present work aims to do. In the study of processes there are given the principles and the practice. The discussion of principles is confined to the essential points; for an extended presentation the reader is referred to my treatise on General Metallurgy. The examples of practice are drawn mainly from the United States. The text and footnotes will show that the technical literature on copper has been covered. The details of practice, not recorded in print, have been obtained through visits to and detailed studies of the leading copper smelteries and refineries of the United States; additional information has been available through correspondence. The tables giving the working data of the leading plants of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Australia show the extent of the field which has been covered. In all my visits and correspondence I have met with the greatest cordiality and liberality. I wish to express here my obligation to the heads and officers of the different smelteries and refineries for the assistance they have rendered me in my task; without this cordial and liberal aid it would not have been possible to prepare this treatise. In working out the details, especially in the large number of calculations, I have been much assisted by the collaboration of my colleague Professor C.R. Hayward. The reading of the page-proof by Professor G.A. Roush detected errata which had escaped my own revision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hydro-Metallurgy of Copper Along period has elapsed - to be measured by centuries - since the Hydro-Metallurgical Treatment of Copper Ores was originated at the Rio Tinto Mines. Several processes have since been evolved, as the result, in large measure, of the investigations of manufacturers of sulphuric acid, who employ iron sulphides containing a low percentage of copper for the production of the acid, and who made it a special study to extract the residual copper from the burnt pyrites and cinders. The successful solution of that problem led to the adaptation of various leaching processes at a few low-grade copper mines, where smelting operations would have been too costly for the profitable treatment of the ores. The application of the various lixiviation processes has had only a limited scope up till now; but it is more than likely that in future more attention will be given to them, owing to the necessity which (it may be expected) will arise for an economical exploitation of the low-grade copper deposits occurring in various parts of the globe. These can be made to pay by leaching - which, when judiciously applied, is cheaper than smelting - and in view of the increasing consumption of copper many of these hitherto undeveloped sources of supply will no doubt be opened up and utilised. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hydro-Metallurgy of Copper: Being an Account of Processes Adopted in the Hydro-Metallurgical Treatment of Cupriferous Ores, Including the Manufacture of Copper Vitriol HE Hydro-metallurgical Treatment of Copper is adopted for cupriferous ores which are too poor in copper contents to stand the high smelting charges that prevail in nearly every copper-producing district, owing to the high price of fuel; and the wet methods have consequently solved many low-grade problems which would otherwise have remained dormant. Similar methods are applied also to the treatment of alloys of copper with silver and gold, for the purpose of separating the precious metals and other ingredients, such as nickel, cobalt, bismuth, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Copper Smelting This work is written to replace my former book, "Modern Copper Smelting," and is intended to describe present metallurgical practice. It consists, in the main, of two classes of material: Studies of actual operations and results at representative plants, supplemented largely by synopses of practising metallurgists; and investigations, comparisons, and discussions of these results, with a view to arriving at their fundamental principles. These two threads are interwoven throughout the entire work, as they cannot be treated separately without sacrifice. The discussion of principles is, however, very brief, owing to the limitations of space, and this book must be regarded as a companion volume to my "Principles of Copper Smelting." Owing to the great developments which the dry metallurgy of copper has experienced during the past twenty years, any attempt to write a complete work upon the subject would result in an encyclopedia rather than a handbook. I have, therefore, believed it best to introduce comparatively few illustrations of processes, but to select these from the best modern practice, and to study them in detail. A book of this nature cannot be written without the cooperation of the owners and managers of a large number of metallurgical plants operating under a variety of conditions, and this assistance has been extended to me in the most liberal manner. Among many sources of information it is proper to designate particularly The Anaconda Copper Mining Company, whose attitude toward the scientific investigator constitutes a personal favor to every student of metallurgy. Basing conclusions upon the treatment of unprecedentedly large quantities of material, handled and recorded in a thoroughly scientific manner, I am thus enabled to offer results that are both authoritative and invaluable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Metallurgy of Copper: Including a Description of the Principal Copper Mines of the United States and Other Countries Having been engaged for some years in the analysis of ores of copper, and in the determination of chemical questions con cerning that' metal, in connection with a large and well-ap pointed smelting establishment, the author has acquired ex perience which he has thought might be of service to others engaged in the same pursuit. He has also been led to believe that some information, in a form accessible to the masses of our people, on the subject of mines, veins and ores of copper, with the known laws of their occurrence, might be of service in assisting in the development of this very important part of the mineral wealth of our country. The present work is designed to supply what the author be lieves to be a desideratum. His aim has been to popularize it sufficiently for the use of those who have not hitherto made the sciences of chemistry and geology a special study, with out so neglecting details as to render it of no value to the ex pert in these studies. How far he has succeeded in this at tempt is for the public to judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the earliest periods of history, stone implements were used; later bronze, an alloy of Copper and tin, replaced stone. After a time men found a way to extract iron from its ores, and the Iron Age began. As nothing has yet been discovered, or invented, to take the place of iron in the arts, the Iron Age has continued until the present day. The process of separating, or extracting iron from its ores; of smelting and refining it; and of making it into its most useful form, steel, is called the metallurgy of iron. From small beginnings, this art has gradually increased to its present importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Copper Smelting As is indicated by its title, the book deals mainly with the fundamental principles upon which methods are based, rather than with descriptions of processes or apparatus. These latter subjects may be found adequately treated in our standard works; but the study of the principles upon which the processes depend is accorded so little space, and is distributed through so much other material, in ordinary metallurgical literature, that a treatise devoted to the reasons why instead of to the means bow will fill an existing gap, provided it is written in an acceptable manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, Lead, and Zinc This outline of the metallurgy of the common metals, namely, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, and zinc, is devoted to the description of processes for winning these metals from their ores and then refining them. The metallurgy of iron is treated only to the point where pig-iron is obtained. Following the description of ores, as well as of the fuels used in smelting them, and the materials of which the furnaces are con structed, we come to sampling, for the determination of the exact value of the ore before treatment. A chapter has been devoted to the subject of thermo-chemistry as applied to igneous methods of extraction. The winning or reduction of' the various metals is then taken up in order, and is followed by. A description of the methods of refining them. Attention is then given to commercial considerations, since the processes must be conducted in a profitable way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron (and Steel), Copper, Lead and Zinc Since 1913, the date of the last edition, such radical changes and improvements have been made in the-metallurgy of the common metals, that this edition of 1921 has been largely rewritten to bring it in accord with present practice, as will be seen by examination of the following pages. Great pains have been taken to clearly set forth underlying principles and at the same time to give the details of methods and of metallurgical equip ment, and their cost. It is realized that, due to the rapid advance in prices, the costs of operation have lately been subject to serious modification. A chapter has been devoted to questions of the economic situation of the business of metallurgy. Little attempt has been made to describe methods not now in use. The three last-named subj ects are special in their character, while the others are general, and may be regarded as introductory to the subject of Metallurgy. It was originally intended that all the above-mentioned subjects should be com prised in this volume, and it was not until after a considerable portion of it had been printed off, that it was decided to publish the special subjects, Copper, Zinc, and Brass, in a separate volume, on the ground that a single volume containing them all would have been inconveniently large.
