These nanohybrids exhibit excellent electrochemical properties due to their unique structural features and enhanced surface area. In recent years, the development of metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids has gained significant attention in the field of energy conversion and storage, particularly for proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct methanol fuel cells. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key reaction in fuel cells, and metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids have shown remarkable ORR activity. These nanohybrids possess high electrocatalytic activity, which can enhance the efficiency of fuel cells. In addition, metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids have shown great potential as anode and cathode catalysts in fuel cells. The use of metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids in fuel cells offers several advantages, including high energy conversion efficiency, sustainability, and reduced environmental impact. Carbon-based materials, such as graphene, are ideal candidates for fuel cell applications due to their excellent electrical conductivity, surface area, and chemical stability. The incorporation of metal oxides into graphene-based nanohybrids can further enhance their electrocatalytic properties. The development of metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids for fuel cell applications involves several challenges, including the selection of appropriate metal oxides, synthesis methods, and optimization of the electrocatalytic activity. The performance and stability of the electrocatalysts are also critical factors for long-term durability of fuel cells. In addition, the ionomer and ion exchange membrane materials used in fuel cells can affect the proton conductivity and electron conductivity, which can impact the overall performance of the fuel cell. Overall, the development of metal oxide-graphene nanohybrids for fuel cell applications has the potential to revolutionize the field of energy conversion and storage. This technology can provide a sustainable and efficient energy source for various applications, including transportation, industrial processes, and residential power generation. Further research is needed to optimize the electrocatalytic activity and durability of these nanohybrids, and to develop scalable and cost-effective synthesis methods for their production.

Book excerpt: Fuel cell technology is quite promising for conversion of chemical energy of hydrocarbon fuels into electricity without forming air pollutants. There are several types of fuel cells: polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and alkaline fuel cell (AFC). Among these, SOFCs are the most efficient and have various advantages such as flexibility in fuel, high reliability, simple balance of plant (BOP), and a long history. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. A new class of electrolytes such as LaGaO is considered to be 3 highly useful for intermediate-temperature SOFCs.

Book excerpt: LIG is a revolutionary technique that uses a common CO2 infrared laser scriber, like the one used in any machine shop, for the direct conversion of polymers into porous graphene under ambient conditions. This technique combines the preparation and patterning of 3D graphene in a single step, without the use of wet chemicals. The ease in the structural engineering and excellent mechanical properties of the 3D graphene obtained have made LIG a versatile technique for applications across many fields. This book compiles cutting-edge research on LIG by different research groups all over the world. It discusses the strategies that have been developed to synthesize and engineer graphene, including controlling its properties such as porosity, composition, and surface characteristics. The authors are pioneers in the discovery and development of LIG and the book will appeal to anyone involved in nanotechnology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and device development, especially those with an interest in the synthesis and applications of graphene-based materials.
