Book excerpt: Abstract: Modeling of the strengthening effect of grain boundaries in metallic polycrystals in a physically consistent way without arbitrary length scales is a long-standing, unsolved problem. A two-scale method to predict quantitatively the Hall-Petch effect has been developed, implemented, and tested. Based on a finite element formulation, a grain-scale simulation (GSS) makes use of novel single-crystal constitutive equations to determine local stresses, strains, and slip magnitudes while enforcing compatibility and equilibrium throughout a polycrystal in a finite element sense. A novel meso-scale simulation (MSS) redistributes the mobile part of the dislocation density within grains, and enforces slip transmission criteria at grain boundaries. Stepwise simulation at the two scales proceeds sequentially in order to predict the spatial distribution of dislocation density and the flow stress for each slip system within each grain. The two-scale model accurately predicted the strain hardening of multi-crystal iron specimens having 9-39 grains and lattice curvature for a Fe-3% Si specimen after 8% strain. The two-scale model predicted the Hall-Petch effect and its magnitude without involving related arbitrary parameters.

Book excerpt: The aim of this PhD thesis is to incorporate deformation twinning in a full-field viscoplastic crystal plasticity model based on fast Fourier transform in an effort to gain insights into its role on strain localization. This work is motivated by current experimental evidences on the important role that dislocation reactions at the twin interface play on damage initiation in materials during plastic deformation. We began first by investigating the role of slip on stress localization. To this end, we simulated the effect of macroscopic deformation path, which dictates a macroscopic stress state, as well as pre-existing microstructure in typical ferritic steel, where plastic deformation is accommodated by slip mechanism. The results show that the width of localized strain rate regions near grain boundaries is a function of the deformation path, and there is a positive correlation between local Taylor factor and local stress field, which slightly depends on deformation path. For the incorporation of mechanical twinning in twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel, we implemented predominant reorientation scheme (PTR) in vpFFT, which was implemented previously in the mean field VPSC. The comparison between experimental and simulation results indicates that twin volume fraction, final texture, and stress-strain curve were satisfactorily predicted. Despite that predominant twin reorientation scheme was not suitable to capture lamellar shape of twins in the microstructure, twin domains were predicted to form and grow at or close to grain boundary regions. Finally, we surveyed current literature, which aimed at capturing the characteristic lamellar morphology of twins. Literature review shows several unsuccessful crystal plasticity simulations in capturing twin nucleation and twin lamellar shape at measocale. These inabilities can be attributed to i) twin nucleation that is controlled by local atomistic configurations and stress fluctuations at the grain boundaries, and ii) the random or stochastic nature of twin nucleation, which has been proved by EBSD observation. Based on the EBSD observations, twin nucleation depends on both microstructural (e.g, grain size, dislocation density) and loading conditions ( e.g, stress, strain). Furthermore, the propensity, frequency, and morphology of deformation twins are different among grain with the same orientation and applied boundary conditions.

This initiative involves the development of physics-based multilength-scale models to optimize casting and deformation processing of polycrystalline materials. The purpose of this initiative is to develop models to simulate the material's mechanical response on the meso length-scale. The meso length-scale refers to the realm where the material microstructure (e. g., grain size and shape, crystallite orientation, etc.) is resolved but dislocations are homogenized. The recent development of two experimental technologies has provided a unique capability to validate material models on the mesolength-scale. The first of these technologies is the ultrahigh-vacuum diffusion bonding machine. This machine has been demonstrated to build bicrystals with high-precision planar grain boundaries joining two precisely oriented crystallites. The second technology is Orientation Imaging Microscopy. This technology has been demonstrated to precisely determine the local lattice orientation in a microstructure. Hence, this provides a powerful tool to characterize local lattice rotations following specified levels of deformation. The coupling of these two technologies provides a tool for detailed study of a material's mechanical response due to the presence of an interface or grain boundary. 6 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: To better understand consequences of classical assumptions regarding deformation mechanisms at the mesoscale, experimental observations of mesoscale deformation are presented. In light of actual micrographics of deformed polycrystals, the Von Mises criterion which states that 5 independent plastic deformation sources are needed at each material point to satisfy compatibility is studied, and the consequences of violating this assumption are presented through comprehensive parametric studies. From these studies, it can be concluded that not only are 5 independent plastic deformation sources not needed or observed at each point, but if less than 5 sources are allowed to be active a new physical understanding of a mechanism for kinematic hardening emerges. Furthermore, for enhanced subgrain rotation and evolution the Von Mises criterion must be violated. The second focus of this work is looking at studies, experiments, and models of mesoscale deformation in order to better understand controlling deformation length scales, so that they can be fed into a combined top-down, bottom-up, non-uniform crystal plasticity model that captures the variability provided by the mesoscale during deformation. This can in turn be used to more accurately model the heterogeneity provided by the response of each grain. The length scale intuited from insight into mesoscale deformation mechanisms through observation of experiments and analytical models is the free slip line length of each slip system, which informs non-uniform material parameters in a crystal plasticity model that control the yielding, hardening, and subsequent softening of each individual slip system. The usefulness of this non-uniform multiscale crystal plasticity model is then explored with respect to its ability to reproduce experimentally measured responses at different strain levels for different size grains. Furthermore, a "Mantle-Core" type model which combines both the non-uniform material parameter model and the limited slip model is created, in which the majority of plastic deformation is accommodated near the grain boundary under multi-slip, and uniform plastic deformation occurs in the bulk dominated by double or triple slip. These models are compared for similar levels of hardening, and the pole figures that result from their deformation are compared to experimental pole figures. While there are other models that can capture the heterogeneity introduced by mesoscale deformation at the grain scale, this combined top-down, bottom-up multiscale crystal plasticity model is by far one of the most computationally efficient as the heterogeneity of the mesoscale is does not emerge by introducing higher order terms, but rather by incorporating the heterogeneity into a simple crystal plasticity formulation. Therefore, as computational power increases, this approach will be among the first that will be able to perform accurate polycrystal level modeling while retaining the heterogeneity introduced by non-local mesoscale deformation mechanisms at the sub-grain scale.
