But while Lewis ended his life just three years later, Clark, as the highest-ranking federal official in the West, spent three decades overseeing its consequences: Indian removal and the destruction of Native America. In a rare combination of storytelling and scholarship, bestselling author Landon Y. Jones vividly depicts Clark's life and the dark and bloody ground of America's early West, capturing the qualities of character and courage that made Clark an unequaled leader in America's grander enterprise: the shaping of the West.

The expedition, called the Corps of Discovery, was President Thomas Jefferson's visionary project to explore the American West. It began in May of 1804 and ended in September 1806. Before the expedition, Lewis was Jefferson's private presidential secretary. He also served in the military, where he met Clark. After the expedition, Lewis served a short term as Governor of the Territory of Upper Louisiana before he died. Clark lived for many years and held various government positions, including Superintendent of Indian Affairs and Governor of the Missouri Territory.

Book excerpt: The first five volumes of the new edition of the Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition have been widely heralded as a lasting achievement in the study of western exploration. The sixth volume begins on November 2, 1805, in the second year of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark’s epic journey. It covers the last leg of the party’s route from the Cascades of the Columbia River to the Pacific Coast and their stay at Fort Clatsop, near the river’s mouth, until the spring of 1806. Travel and exploration, described in the early part, were hampered by miserable weather, and the enforced idleness in winter quarters permitted detailed record keeping. The journals portray the party’s interaction with the Indians of the lower Columbia River and the coast, particularly the Chinooks, Clatsops, Wahkiakums, Cathlamets, and Tillamooks. No other volume in this edition has such a wealth of ethnographic and natural history materials, most of it apparently written by Lewis and copied by Clark, and accompanied by sketches of plants, animals, and Indians and their canoes, implements, and clothing. Incorporating a wide range of new scholarship dealing with all aspects of the expedition, from Indian languages to plants and animals to geographical and historical contexts, this new edition expands and updates the annotation of the last edition, published early in the twentieth century.

A number of Native Americans helped the duo and their crew survive their travels from 1804 to 1806. In fact, one of them, Sacagawea, is now a legend. The Shoshone teen was married to a French Trader and became mother to a baby son. Because she spoke two Native languages, Sacagawea joined the Lewis and Clark expedition as a translator. Together, they traveled eight thousand miles to the Pacific Ocean and back, no easy feat during the early nineteenth century. Ever since, their story has been told and retold. Readers will learn how fate brought them together in life and in death.
