Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merchant Vessels This is the fourth volume of a series dealing with the business of ocean shipping and transportation. The first volume, Ocean Steamship Traffic Management, by Professor G. G. Huebner, bore the following Editor's Preface: "This volume upon the management of ocean steamship traffic is the first of a series of manuals designed to assist young men in training for the shipping business. The necessity for such a series of manuals became evident when, as a result of the great war, the tonnage of vessels under the American Flag was, within a brief period, increased many fold. To carry on the war, and to meet the demands of ocean commerce after the war, the United States Government, through the Shipping Board and private shipyards, brought into existence a large mercantile marine. If these ships are to continue in profitable operation under the American Flag, the people of the United States must be trained to operate them. Steamship companies, ship-brokers and freight forwarders must all be able to secure men necessary to carry on the commercial and shipping activities that make use of the ships. A successful merchant marine requires ships, men to man the ships and business organization to give employment to the vessels. "In its Bulletin upon 'Vocational Education for Foreign Trade and Shipping' (since republished as 'Training for Foreign Trade, ' Miscellaneous Series No. 97, Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, for sale by the Superintendent of Documents), the Federal Board for Vocational Education includes among other courses suggested for foreign trade training two shipping courses upon subjects with which exporters should be familiar, namely, 'Principles of Ocean Transportation' and 'Ports and Terminals.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Merchant Marine: A Chronicle of American Ships and Sailors A vessel was a community venture, and the custom still survives in the ancient ports of the Maine coast where the shapely wooden schooners are fashioned. The blacksmith, the rigger, the calker, took their pay in shares. They became part owners, as did likewise the merchant who supplied stores and material; and when the ship was a oat, the master, the mates, and even the seamen, were allowed cargo space for commodities which they might buy and sell to their own ad vantage. Thus early they learned to trade as shrewdly as they navigated, and every voyage directly concerned a whole neighborhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant Vessel: A Sailor Boy's Voyages to See the World In the present volume, it has been the aim of the writer to draw an intelligible picture of a Merchant Seaman's life. Were the Merchant Service such as youth are most apt to imagine it, it would undoubtedly have great charms for one of an adventurous turn of mind. Could the Merchant Sailor always have his choice of voyages - could he obtain a situation when he wished, and to go whither it pleased him - were he not continually at the mercy of tyrannical officers, and grasping shoresmen - and finally, but not by any means of least importance, were his average income sufficient to meet even his most moderate wants, such a life, with all its hardships, would form a not unpleasing experience. But the direct reverse is the fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Question of Ships: The Navy and the Merchant Marine It is a curious fact that a great commercial question, vital in its influence upon the well-being of an eminently practical nation, should so often be approached upon the side of sentiment. A bewildering maze of statistics, an array of accommodating figures, and a dexterous spinning of subtle phrases, are made to form the premises, not of an irrefutable conclusion, but of an appeal, which fires the heart, if it do not satisfy the head, of many a patriot. To discuss a question so sober, so melancholy as the restoration of the Merchant Marine, from the standpoint of its poetical merits, is not a priori convincing of its imminent necessity; and, whether an advocate shines in the broad light-beam of free-trade, or is glorious in the panoply of protection, he should forswear heroics and pleas ad hominem, and treat the subject from the grossly material vantage-ground of dollars and cents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tonnage and Freeboard of Merchant Ships In the early days of sail it conveyed a fairly good idea of the relative Size and capacity of a ship, but the rapid advancement in the science of naval architecture since the introduction of steam has deprived the expres sion of its original signification, so that to-day it merely represents a kind of basis for levying dues and charges. There are various expressions which we may employ when speaking Of the size or capacity of a ship. Those in common use are displacement, deadweight, and registered tonnage (gross or net). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant Navy, Vol. 2 Thoroughly exasperated, the American Government now issued what amounted to an ultimatum. The Germans gave way, and early in May Count Bernstorff presented a Note in which his Government promised that henceforth the campaign would be conducted in accordance with the general principles of international law, and that no vessel would be sunk until some provision had been made for the safety of the passengers and crew. These concessions ushered in a new phase of the con flict. The Imperial Chancellor had yielded to the American demands in the teeth of fierce opposition from the officers of the naval and military commands. The thought of loyally supporting the Government in the attitude it had adopted evidently never entered their minds, as the events recorded in this volume attest; and for the rest of the year they strove, by making progressive encroachments upon the pledges given, to restore the submarine campaign to the position which it had lost. They were tolerably successful for at the end of 1916 merchant vessels were being sunk without warning in the Atlantic and North Sea as well as the Mediterranean: in January 1917 the number of lives lost in British merchant ships was 276, and 245 of these died as a result of the submarine campaign. When, a few weeks later, the German Government declared unrestricted submarine war, it was practically announcing an accomplished fact, but the decision proved the final influence which brought the United States into the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sailor Life on Man of War and Merchant Vessel In accordance with this idea, when some two years ago the writer of these pages returned home, after an absence of nine years at sea, he was considered by the young folks a fit subject to levy upon for a story. But, unluckily, yarns are not ever ready on demand, at beck and nod. It requires various peculiarities in the surroundings, certain favoring circumstances as to time and place, to draw out your real old tar. Let the gale blow, and the good ship plough deeply through the rugged seas, as he lies snugly ensconced under his huge pea-jacket, protected by stout bulwarks from the cold blast and drenching spray, with the bright stars look ing kindly down upon him, and you may be sure of a yarn. There is somewhat suggestive in the scene, and the memories of other times come freely to him, as though driven back on the breeze which roars through the rigging overhead. I've only known one fellow in my life who left school when he was fifteen to go to sea and then had the gumption to quit the sea after a year and a half, although he was enjoying it, in order to finish high school, so that in the end he would be a better ship's officer than a lot of men he saw getting ahead at sea just by rule of thumb. He figured he had been broken in to the sea, had a line on its possibilities, liked it, and so would leave it for a while in order to enjoy it all the more when he returned to it, because he would have easier command of all its possibilities, be in the best of shape for getting all it had to offer. Most boys aren't like that, though, and if they quit school too early they've quit for good and all, and will seem to have an advantage until they're about twenty five, and then they'll see the fellows with a better education forging ahead into the jobs that call for head-work, while at the same time they've picked up the handiness about a ship, too. Old problems in new forms have arisen, and a further examination of them, in view of new developments, seems called for. I propose in the following pages shortly to recapitulate the evidence and the conclusions reached in the former paper, written, it will be noticed before the outbreak of the war, conclusions to which I fully adhere to add further evidence which has been acquired since that paper was written; and to discuss the unprecedented situation which has arisen in view of the German use of submarines as commerce destroyers.
