Book excerpt: The photographs in this exhibition were taken between 1888 and 1916 by the London-based firm Bedford Lemere & Co. Most are the work of Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), one of the best architectural photographers of his day. He travelled the country taking pictures of the homes of the rich, sometimes as a record for their owners, sometimes for professional decorators or architects. The wealth of late Victorian and Edwardian Liverpool often brought Harry Bedford Lemere to Merseyside. Liverpool, the second port of the British Empire, was at the height of its prosperity at the time. Most of its leading citizens were successful merchants, trading in goods imported through the docks. There were also shipowners, bankers, insurers and lawyers, and manufacturers in food processing and the chemical industry.

Book excerpt: In 1933, Ralph leaves England for a year in the colonies, a test of character forced upon him by his fiancee's father. His journey is told through his letters to Lilian, written with her parting gift a Mabie Todd, Blackbird No 8 ink pen. Despite receiving no reply Ralph continues to recount his adventures as he takes up his position with The Company. As their story unfolds and Ralph's disillusionment reaches a climax, Baker spreads visceral contemporary tales of lost love and broken friendships, in a series of short stories following the pen's journey 60 years later.

Book excerpt: "From 1874 to 1882, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) produced more than 200 paintings and water-colours aside from portraiture that chart his development as an artist. The breadth of his achievement includes figures in landscape settings, architectural studies, seascapes, subject paintings, and studies after old masters. From his powerful studies of models in Paris in the mid-1870s to his compelling paintings set in Venice in the early 1880s, the works published in this volume of the catalogue raisonne show the variety of his aesthetic responses." "Working in the studio and en plein air, Sargent travelled widely during the eight years covered in this volume, painting in Paris, Brittany, Capri, Spain, North Africa and Venice." "This is the first time that Sargent's early work has been mapped so comprehensively. With very few exceptions, this book illustrates all the pictures under discussion in colour. Each painting, including several which have never been published before, is documented in depth with full provenance, exhibition history and bibliography. Original research of primary documents and on-site investigations uncovered much new information, presented in critical discussions of subject matter, dating, style, and significance in the artist's career. The volume reproduces a wealth of Sargent's preliminary and related drawings and of comparative works by other artists." --Book Jacket.
