Book excerpt: Each year, hundreds of millions of credit and debit cardholders make billions of transactions worth trillions of dollars. Yet few consumers are aware that such transactions travel through, and are made possible by, a highly evolved group of intermediaries. Those intermediaries sign up merchants to accept cards, handle card transactions, manage the dispute-resolution process, and, with regulatory agencies, set rules that govern card transactions.I examine the transaction process for debit cards with an eye toward demystifying this quot;Black Box.quot; I explain the two major parts of the transactions process - one, authorization, and two, clearing and settlement. I consider the complications introduced by general-purpose cards, such as Visa and MasterCard, emphasizing the key roles of merchant acquirers and card processors. I also discuss the risk of fraud in the transaction process. While the risk is low for face-to-face transactions, it is far higher for business done by mail, telephone, or over the Internet. Merchant acquirers, who sign up merchants to accept cards and who provide or arrange for processing, bear most of the risk of loss if merchants fail to make good on transactions disputed by customers. To guard against such losses, acquirers evaluate the credit quality of merchants seeking or using the acquirers' services. I identify some of the risk factors associated with specific industries, merchant types, and transactions that influence the price merchants pay for acquirers' services. Finally, I discuss some ways that merchant acquirers and merchants manage risk, especially the risk of fraud.

Topics and features: provides a history of the VISA system from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s; presents a historical narrative based on research gathered from personal documents and interviews with key actors; investigates, for the first time, both the technological and social infrastructures necessary for the VISA system to operate; supplies a detailed case study, highlighting the mutual shaping of technology and social relations, and the influence that earlier information processing practices have on the way firms adopt computers and telecommunications; examines how “gateways” in transactional networks can reinforce or undermine established social boundaries, and reviews the establishment of trust in new payment devices.

Book excerpt: Run your company. Don’t let it run you. Most business owners started their company because they wanted more freedom—to work on their own schedules, make the kind of money they deserve, and eventually retire on the fruits of their labor. Unfortunately, according to John Warrillow, most owners find that stepping out of the picture is extremely difficult because their business relies too heavily on their personal involvement. Without them, their company—no matter how big or profitable—is essentially worthless. But the good news is that entrepreneurs can take specific steps—no matter what stage a business is in—to create a valuable, sellable company. Warrillow shows exactly what it takes to create a solid business that can thrive long into the future.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the all-new second edition of Navigating the Digital Age. This edition brings together more than 50 leaders and visionaries from business, science, technology, government, aca¬demia, cybersecurity, and law enforce¬ment. Each has contributed an exclusive chapter designed to make us think in depth about the ramifications of this digi-tal world we are creating. Our purpose is to shed light on the vast possibilities that digital technologies present for us, with an emphasis on solving the existential challenge of cybersecurity. An important focus of the book is centered on doing business in the Digital Age-par¬ticularly around the need to foster a mu¬tual understanding between technical and non-technical executives when it comes to the existential issues surrounding cybersecurity. This book has come together in three parts. In Part 1, we focus on the future of threat and risks. Part 2 emphasizes lessons from today's world, and Part 3 is designed to help you ensure you are covered today. Each part has its own flavor and personal¬ity, reflective of its goals and purpose. Part 1 is a bit more futuristic, Part 2 a bit more experiential, and Part 3 a bit more practical. How we work together, learn from our mistakes, deliver a secure and safe digital future-those are the elements that make up the core thinking behind this book. We cannot afford to be complacent. Whether you are a leader in business, government, or education, you should be knowledgeable, diligent, and action-oriented. It is our sincerest hope that this book provides answers, ideas, and inspiration. If we fail on the cybersecurity front, we put all of our hopes and aspirations at risk. So we start this book with a simple proposition: When it comes to cybersecurity, we must succeed.

Book excerpt: Acknowledgements The work underlying this study was performed at the Econometric and Special Studies Department of the Nederlandsche Bank, where many contributed to it. I am indebted to all the statistical assistants of the department, especially to Anja Wouters and Rob Vet for their patient assistance in building up the data sets and analysing the survey data. Also Corina den Broeder rendered devoted and persistent research assistance with respect to the multicountry analysis during her stay at the Bank and I am grateful to Mike Clements of the Bank of England for his careful reading and commenting on that part. My collegues Peter van Els and Carlo Winder made some valuable suggestions. Liesbeth Klein and Coen Collee helped me avoid a number of errors in English, and thanks to the skilful efforts of Marietta Bakker, Gita Gajapersad and Carolien Verhoeven the text looks as it does. Above all, lowe a debt of gratitude to Martin Fase, one of the pioneers in this field of research, for his efforts and contribution to the improvement of this study. INTRODUCTION We seem to be well on the way to a cashless society. Paradoxically, however, the majority of the transactions are still paid in cash even in the most advanced economies. A second paradoxical observation is that, despite the primary and common character of currency, the economic theory on the use of and demand for cash is only rarely supported by empirical evidence.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what happens during a swipe of a credit card? Every major tech company will become a payments company. Yet, not many people understand how payment systems in the US work. Those that do "get it" are unlocking multi-billion dollar opportunities. If you've ever wondered what happens when you actually swipe/dip/tap your credit card or debit card then The Anatomy of the Swipe breaks down the details in the simplest manner possible. Here are some questions answered within these pages: How does money move from my credit card to my favorite coffee shop? How can I build a neo-bank? How can I build my own debit or credit card? How can I accept card based payments? The Anatomy of the Swipe speaks to software developers and entrepreneurs who are looking at implementing card-based payments for the first time, merchants who want to be able to accept payments for a website or store, or those who want to issue their own debit/credit card. This book walks beginners through modern innovations created because of card-based payments, as well as the motivations and revenue models of each party in the payments ecosystem.
