Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a concise, comprehensive overview of Mexico's population, its history, current demographic features, and future growth potential, Alba establishes the bases of Mexico's ongoing population boom, placing it in its social context. He also considers repercussions of past and present demographic trends and evaluates current population policies as set by the Mexican government. Presented in a readily accessible format and highlighted by a generous number of tables and charts available to an English-speaking audience for the first time, Alba's critical data on contributory demographic phenomena—a sustained high-fertility rate, steadily declining mortality rate, migratory movements, urbanization, and economically active population segments—illuminate the basic trends of Mexico's population since the 1910 Revolution. Alba offers the first authoritative account of the population of Mexico, a country that has experienced not only a population explosion, but a simultaneous urban explosion. Combining demographic data with an analysis of future trends in the economy, culture, and social health of Mexican society, The Population of Mexico is not only a landmark achievement in its own right, but also a model for how population explosions will affect the general development of the Third World. Alba believes that family planning as a tool of demographic policy may not have the expected societal results. Its choice is due to reluctance to define population policies and set target levels and rates for demographic variables. Attainment of a demographic objective does not necessarily mean that the only or even the most appropriate tools are demographic. Entry by increasing numbers of women into the work force and participation of all population sectors in the benefits, options, and accomplishments of development can be more effective in reducing birth rates than any measures of inducement or coercion. Family planning should be incorporated into other economic and social programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two leading scholars, this book provides a detailed analysis of Mexico's political economy. James M. Cypher and Raúl Delgado Wise begin with an examination of Mexico's pivotal economic crisis of the 1980s and the consequent turn toward an export-led economy, later anchored by NAFTA. They show how Mexico, after abandoning frequently successful past practices of state-led development, disastrously tied its future to an unconditional reliance on foreign corporations to promote an export-led growth strategy. Focusing on Mexico's cheap labor export model, the authors use the maquiladora sector and the auto industry as case studies of the perils of globalization—the "race to the bottom" as capital becomes ever more international. The government's unconstrained free-market policies, they convincingly argue, have resulted in a fragmented economy marked by stagnation, falling wages, informal part-time employment, and massive migration, which define daily life for all but a tiny minority.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has encouraged worldwide mobility, intensified migration and supported growing interconnectedness through new technologies; it has therefore substantially contributed to the development of so-called transnational spaces. This volume focuses on transnational spaces which should not be understood as locations on a map or as sealed containers, but instead as relational social areas which are composed of various relationships. Transnationalization increases liberation and/or emancipation from place because social relations overcome physical space and local, regional and national boundaries. As a consequence, a reconfiguration of social, cultural, political and economic scopes of action occurs. This volume reveals that for people in general and for migration movements in particular, new borders have been established in many places all over the world. The biographies of global actors and migrants reference this alteration of space. Additionally this volume calls special attention to border regions and their social configurations. Borders appear as narratives which can have an enormous impact on social structures. This book further deals with different aspects and various tensions having to do with local and global change, interplay and interdependence. Globalization leads to development that often ignores regional needs, supports the continuation of post-colonial power and maintains hegemonic dominance.
