Book excerpt: The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)-- a program of the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-- has sought for more than two decades to strengthen American manufacturing. It is a national network of affiliated manufacturing extension centers and field offices located throughout all fifty states and Puerto Rico. Qualified MEP Centers work directly with small and medium manufacturing firms in their state or sub-state region, providing expertise, services and assistance directed to foster growth, improve supply chain positioning, leverage emerging technologies, upgrade manufacturing processes, develop work force training, and apply and implement new information. Strengthening American Manufacturing: The Role of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership is the summary of a symposium convened to review current operations and some of the recent MEP initiatives in the broader context of global manufacturing trends and the opportunities for high-value manufacturing companies. Business leaders, academic experts, and state and federal officials addressed the metrics and impacts of MEP and identified potential areas of improvement. The meeting drew attention to the scale and focuses of MEP, and highlighted the role it plays in supporting and enabling U.S. manufacturers to compete more effectively in the global marketplace. This report includes an overview of key issues raised at this workshop and a detailed summary of the conference presentations.

Book Synopsis Sustainable MEP Practices: Designing for Resilience and Efficiency by : Charles Nehme
Download or read book Sustainable MEP Practices: Designing for Resilience and Efficiency written by Charles Nehme and published by Charles Nehme. This book was released on with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern world faces an urgent challenge to balance development and environmental preservation, and as engineers, designers, and builders, we play a critical role in that balance. This book, Sustainable MEP Practices: Designing for Resilience and Efficiency, is a response to that challenge and a call to action for integrating sustainable practices into every facet of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) design. By advancing sustainable methods, we can contribute not only to lower energy and water usage but also to healthier, more resilient buildings and communities. This book is intended as a practical guide to adopting sustainable practices within MEP systems. Here, we explore actionable solutions in water conservation, energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly materials that directly impact the building sector’s sustainability profile. With rising demand for resilient and efficient design solutions, MEP professionals are uniquely positioned to make a transformative impact. These changes may range from conserving water through advanced HVAC cooling systems to reducing energy consumption with efficient lighting and renewable energy integrations. The sustainable materials section will address options for selecting products with reduced environmental footprints, while our discussion of resilience will highlight designing systems that endure the test of time and climate challenges. Each chapter is structured to provide both the foundational knowledge and real-world applications necessary to apply sustainable MEP strategies in diverse projects, from commercial buildings to residential complexes and industrial facilities. Case studies, technical breakdowns, and insights from successful implementations demonstrate how these practices can be applied to create designs that meet the rigorous standards of today while preparing for tomorrow’s demands. This book also considers the interdisciplinary nature of MEP systems and the value of collaboration among architects, environmental consultants, and structural engineers to achieve a unified approach to sustainability. We discuss how leveraging digital tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) can enhance this collaboration and enable detailed planning, performance tracking, and ongoing optimization. I invite readers to use this guide as a reference, a source of inspiration, and a toolkit to drive meaningful change in the design, construction, and operation of building systems. Whether you are an engineer, architect, project manager, or sustainability advocate, may this book empower you to create resilient, efficient, and sustainable building systems that benefit both people and the planet. Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Neuroanesthesia by : Keith J. Ruskin
Download or read book Fundamentals of Neuroanesthesia written by Keith J. Ruskin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurosurgical procedures are becoming more common and are taking place in the operating room and in interventional suites. Procedures that used to be performed only at major academic institutions are also being done in small community hospitals, and anesthesiologists in private practice are being asked to care for these patients. In many cases, treatment options are controversial or rapidly evolving. Close cooperation between the anesthesiologist and neurosurgeon is essential to achieve optimal outcomes and early recognition of any adverse events so appropriate therapy can be implemented. Fundamentals of Neuroanesthesia is a comprehensive guide to neuroanesthesia that discusses neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and neurosurgical procedures and offers practical approaches and solutions to administering neuroanesthesia and providing perioperative care for neurosurgical patients. Chapters emphasize clinical management of neurosurgical problems that may be encountered in community practice as well as major academic medical centers. Highlighted key points, figures, algorithms, and management procedures supplement the text. This book is a must-have volume for general anesthesiologists, anesthesiology fellows, and subspecialists.
Book Synopsis Conservation Research, Policy and Practice by : William J. Sutherland
Download or read book Conservation Research, Policy and Practice written by William J. Sutherland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation research is essential for advancing knowledge but to make an impact scientific evidence must influence conservation policies, decision making and practice. This raises a multitude of challenges. How should evidence be collated and presented to policymakers to maximise its impact? How can effective collaboration between conservation scientists and decision-makers be established? How can the resulting messages be communicated to bring about change? Emerging from a successful international symposium organised by the British Ecological Society and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, this is the first book to practically address these questions across a wide range of conservation topics. Well-renowned experts guide readers through global case studies and their own experiences. A must-read for practitioners, researchers, graduate students and policymakers wishing to enhance the prospect of their work 'making a difference'. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
Book Synopsis Chemical Applications of Atomic and Molecular Electrostatic Potentials by : Peter Politzer
Download or read book Chemical Applications of Atomic and Molecular Electrostatic Potentials written by Peter Politzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 26-27, 1980, a symposium organized by one of us (P. P. ) was held at the l79th American Chemical Society National ~1eeting in Houston, Texas, under the sponsorship of the Theoretical Chemistry Subdivision of the Division of Physical Chemistry. The symposium was entitled "The Role of the Electrostatic Potential in Chemistry," and it served as a stimulus for this book. The original scope and coverage have been broadened, however; included here, in addition to contributions from the eleven invited symposium speakers and two of the poster-session participants, are four papers that were specially invited for this book. Furthermore, several authors have taken this opportunity to present at least partial reviews of the areas being discussed. Most of the manuscripts were completed in the late spring and early summer of 1980. We hope that this book will achieve two goals: First, we are trying to provide an overall picture, including recent advances, of current chemical research, both fundamental and applied, involving the electrostatic potential. Second, we want to convey an appreci ation of both the powers and also the limitations of the electro static potential approach. In order to achieve these goals, we have selected contributors whose research areas provide a very broad coverage of the field. Throughout the book, we have used a. u.
