Download or read book Brimming with God written by Barbara J. Blodgett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yearning to be a theologian is widespread. Pastors, students, supervisors, and mentors all wish to think theologically about their ministries but often feel inadequately prepared. This book seeks to respond by showcasing a variety of approaches to theological reflection brought to bear upon actual situations in ministry. It is written by theological field educators. We define theological reflection as reflection upon lived, embodied experiences in ministry that seeks to make sense of practice and form reflectors in habits for competent ministry. An introductory chapter defines theological reflection as practiced within field education and points readers toward a diversity of approaches. Eleven subsequent chapters present two reflections upon the same case, each reflection written by a different author and representing a different reflection method. The book's significance is as a resource for teaching theological reflection in a range of settings. It not only offers a definition of and rationale for theological reflection but models various approaches to it. Its use of cases furthermore models the use of case studies in theological education and pastoral practice more widely.
Download or read book Ingenuity written by Lisa L. Thompson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ingenuity introduces a theology and practice of preaching that emerges from the faith and wisdom of black women. Preaching has been resourced and taught from a narrow field of cultural or gendered experiences, historically. Without much support from established channels, black women are left to “figure it out” on their own, and others discern how to preach from a limiting scope. The best preachers understand their own voices and the voices of others. They stretch and grow, and this enables them to preach more effectively. Ingenuity equips readers to negotiate tradition, life experiences, and theological conviction in the creative work that makes way for sacred speech. With Ingenuity, Lisa Thompson offers deep insights for anyone seeking to enlarge their understanding, their language, and their sense of lived experiences, and offers practical help through “In Practice” segments for those who preach. "Written from the deep well of the spirituality of Black women, Thompson has given us a remarkable guide for what preaching should be and must be for the times we are in. Accessible, thoughtful, probing, pastoral, prophetic—all come together in this text. A must read for anyone committed to faithful excellence in proclaiming the word." -Emilie M. Townes, Dean and E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University Divinity School

Book excerpt: Author Ronald Seaman is writing Churchianity as a solemn and compelling critique of the organized Christian Church. He highlights and explains the primary cause of most of the spiritual apathy which have characterized local churches since the Fourth Century. The root cause involves a fundamental change in church pastoral ministry which the author believes has produced disastrous spiritual results through the centuries. The author portrays the young Christian Church in its first three centuries as prospering spiritually in spite of severe persecution. These early believers met informally in homes as to nurture and disciple each other, and enthusiastically evangelized everyone they met. Understandably, Satan was not happy. To frustrate and checkmate this spiritual vitality, the Devil devised a clever strategy. He took advantage of church leaders' willful disobedience of Biblical teaching. Read Churchianity and become acquainted with Satan's strategy and its success in transforming the vigor and enthusiasm of the Early Christian into the tragedy and sadness of ""spectator Christianity"", and consider and evaluate the author’s solution for restoring lay biblical pastoral ministry in local churches.

Book Synopsis The Mentoring Church by : Phil A. Newton
Download or read book The Mentoring Church written by Phil A. Newton and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2017 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ministry Book of the Year--The Gospel Coalition 2017 Book Awards The critical missing element in Christian mentoring today: the congregation "Bringing up future leaders isn't just the job of the pastor but of the whole congregation. This is an urgently needed book in churches today." --R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Young, emerging leaders of the church, many of whom have gone through leadership training and traditional mentorship programs, still too often find themselves unprepared for the realities of ministry. Many leave the ministry altogether, overwhelmed. Phil Newton reveals a critical gap: single-source mentorship is incomplete. Mentoring must involve the congregation, not just senior pastors, in order to bring forth mature, resilient leaders prepared for all that ministry entails. The solid, practical solutions in The Mentoring Church offer churches of any size both the vision for mentoring future leaders and a workable template to follow. With insightful consideration of theological, historical, and contemporary training models for pastor/church partnerships, Newton is a reliable guide to developing a church culture that equips fully prepared leaders.
Book Synopsis The Big Book of Christian Mysticism by : Carl McColman
Download or read book The Big Book of Christian Mysticism written by Carl McColman and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular usage, "mysticism" typically refers to New Age or Eastern forms of spirituality. However, the mystical tradition is also an important component of the Christian tradition. At its heart--and much like its expression in other faith traditions--Christian mysticism is an ancient practice that incorporates meditation, contemplation, worship, philosophy, the quest for personal enlightenment, and the experience of Divine presence. This volume is a comprehensive introduction and guide to Christian mysticism. It is a big book about a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, blissful, experiential unison with God. Among the topics covered here are a general introduction to mysticism, the Bible and mysticism, the history and types of Christian mysticism, biographical sketches of leading Christian mystics, and practical instructions about practicing mysticism today. This is a breathtaking work that explores a form of spirituality that has changed lives over the course of 2,000 years. Learning about Christian mysticism and how it has been articulated through the centuries will prove inspirational for today's seekers, regardless of the faith tradition. "The mystic is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of mytic." --William McNamara

Book Synopsis Preparing the Pastors We Need by : George A. Mason
Download or read book Preparing the Pastors We Need written by George A. Mason and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the widespread discussion about 'the future of the church,' an important point is sometimes overlooked: tomorrow's church will depend to a great extent on the new pastors of today who will serve and guide our churches in the years ahead. George Mason's Preparing the Pastors We Need: Reclaiming the Congregation's Role in Training Clergy makes a timely intervention, asking us to redefine pastoral leadership by analyzing how, in fact, pastors are made in the first place. The book highlights an exciting development in the training of pastors: pastoral residency programs and mentoring. Mason demonstrates that these programs work best when the congregations themselves, not just leadership or staff, are an active participant in the training. In this way, churches begin to reclaim their rightful role in the formation of the ministers that will serve them. And, at the same time, they become healthier and more effective churches. Mason gives us the analogy of physician training. Medical school produces graduates with extensive knowledge of the body, but a practicing doctor will require several more years of internship and residency. Similarly, our seminaries and divinity schools produce men and women with good biblical knowledge, but they might not prepare a graduate for the task of helping a bereaved parishioner cope with the sudden loss of a loved one. Moreover, such areas as finances, budgets, personnel management, and vocational identity are also not well suited to seminary study. Mason shows that congregation-based mentoring and residency are excellent ways to bridge this gap.

Book Synopsis Saying Our Stories by : Ronald H. Sunderland
Download or read book Saying Our Stories written by Ronald H. Sunderland and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOS is the culmination of my work since 1966, when my wife, Noel, and I moved from Melbourne, Australia, to Houston, Texas. My initial goal was to begin a four-year clinical pastoral education program (CPE) at the Institute of Religion in the Texas Medical Center. The long-term dream was to develop a parish-based lay pastoral education program to equip laypeople to serve with their ordained pastors in the pastoral ministry of the parish. Until the midnineteenth century, pastoral care was the province of parish clergy, for which few were adequately equipped. I aimed to change that model by demonstrating that laypeople with the necessary training were integral to the church's ministry. That would entail providing clergy with supervisory skills. The founder organizations of the newly constituted Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) had pioneered clergy pastoral care education in the 1920s. The Equipping Laypeople for Ministry (ELM) program, which I founded in 1979, proved effective in the dual tasks of lay pastoral care training and the preparation of clergy for their necessary function of oversight of lay pastors. Saying Our Stories is the account of the pioneering effort to undertake those tasks and demonstrate the effectiveness of the new model of parish pastoral ministry. It is a book of stories. The text suggests that pastoral care, at heart, is knowing that when a troubled person casts round for someone to listen to her (or his) story, they need a caring story-listener. Such listening is hard work, but story-listeners know that to listen is to care. If they finish up thinking, "All I did was listen," they know it is such a big all!
