Book excerpt: Mental toughness has been recognized as a key component necessary for optimal athletic achievement. The use of mental toughness training programs has been found to help athletes develop specific psychological skills associated with mental toughness, such as goal setting, positive self-talk, mental imagery, and relaxation. By developing these skills, athletes are better able to control levels of competition anxiety, increase levels of self-confidence, and ultimately, improve performance results. The main purpose of thisstudy was to determine the effects of a specifically designed mental toughness training program for varsity level track and field athletes. Participants included 4 varsity track and field athletes from Western University (Mage = 20.27; SD = 1.26). Although results did not specifically indicate that the mental toughness training intervention positively influenced performance results, all participants reported that the intervention was effective for controlling levels of competition anxiety, increasing self-confidence, as well as improving performance in practice. Additionally, all participants reported high satisfaction with the intervention. Results from this study highlight the importance of mental toughness training for varsity athletes, and can furthermore encourage both coaches and athletes to devote an appropriate amount of training time to the development of psychological skills essential to success in sport.

Book excerpt: Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine and measure mental toughness during the rehabilitation process with a mental imagery intervention using an electronic digital script. Participants: Based on a power analysis for a 2-tailed within-subjects test design using alpha=0.05, 57 orthopedic non-surgical participants were needed for this study. Setting: This study took place at an NCAA Division 1 and Division III University with male and female athletes who had sustainted a non-surgical orthopedic injury that required a rehabilitation porgram with an athletic trainer. Design: The study design was pre-posttest using the Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ-48) to quantitatively measure mental toughness of the participants before beginning the non-surgical injury rehabilitation program and at the completion of the rehabilitation program while using an electronic mental imagery intervention. Intervention: An electronic digital mental imagery script was used as the intervention. Participants used during the application of cryotherapy at the end of each their rehabilitation sessions. Main Outcome Measures: The IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 Armonk, NY : IBM Corp. was used to calculate the Wilcoxon Signed Rank for the mental toughness and the various subscales of the MTQ-48 data analysis. A one way ANOVA was used to analyze mental toughness between genders. Results: There were no significant differences in mental toughness changes with a mental imagery intervention over a minimum of 6 day rehabilitation program. There were no significant differences in the effects of mental toughness on the level of non-surgical injury rehabilitation adherence in collegiate aged student-athletes. There were no significant differences in mental toughness between genders of collegiate aged student-athletes when participating in a non-surgical injury rehabilitation. There were no sigificant differences in rehabilitation adherence between genders: Conclusion: The results of this study suggest athletic trainers, physical therapists, and physicians must continue to work to develop longer mental toughness intervention treatment programs to help athletes' improve their levels of mental toughness and sustain the improvements over time while maintaining success throughout a rehabilitation program.

Book excerpt: "Mental toughness is commonly associated with successful performance in the realm of athletics. However, despite the prevalence of its usage, the concept remains somewhat ambiguous in its definition and practical application. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between mental toughness and running performance amongst collegiate distance runners, a population that has yet to be the center of a mental toughness investigation. Of additional interest was to determine how a coach's servant leadership attributes interacts with athletes' mental toughness. Participants (n = 334) were males and females from 64 collegiate track teams from all divisions of the NCAA. Participants completed the Mental Toughness Questionnaire 48 (MTQ48; Clough et al., 2002), the Revised Servant Leadership Profile for Sport (RSLP- S; Hammermeister et al., 2008), and provided their current three- and five-kilometer personal best track times. Additionally, participants that competed in selected five- kilometer events had their race times recorded. Statistical analysis employed the ANOVA, ANCOVA, and Pearson r correlation techniques. Significant differences were discovered in both reported three- and five-kilometer personal best times, with the mentally tough group running faster than the non-mentally tough group. A significant difference was also found on the MTQ48 for the servant leader groups, with athletes that perceived their coaches to be servant leaders being more mentally tough than athletes in the non-servant leader group. Results are discussed in terms of theory, research, and practice"--Document.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between college student-athletes' well-being, self-ratings of mental toughness in sport, and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate. One hundred and two NCAA Division I female student-athletes completed measures of well-being, mental toughness, and coach-created motivational climate over the course of a university academic year. The author hypothesized that mental toughness and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate would predict well-being. Overall, the results of the study found a predictive relationship between well-being and mental toughness, and well-being, mental toughness, and an ego-involving coach-created motivational climate. These results provide initial evidence that cognitive, affective, personality, and environmental factors influence student-athlete well-being. The findings also demonstrate that Henriques et al.'s (2017) Nested Model of Well-being (NM) may be an effective model to understand the unique factors that influence student-athlete well-being. For example, the results of the study indicate that the construct of mental toughness may overlap with Henriques et al.'s (2014) conceptualization of adaptive potentials (one's skills and abilities to function effectively in the environment). Additionally, the influence of a student-athlete's perception of the coach-created motivational climate on well-being may be aligned with the NM's characterization of the environmental domain. These results indicate a need to study other factors that influence student-athlete well-being. This study demonstrates a need to develop measures that assess student-athlete well-being while also accounting for the unique cultural components of college athletics that may influence the well-being of student athletes.
