Book excerpt: Bob Bienvenu we are getting to the end of my story about mental illness and how spirituality can greatly help one in dealing with their illnesses and also greatly enhance their lives I started my book with the history of mental illness and how science and medicine have progressed in dealing with the mentally ill. Then I gave a history on the beginnings of psychiatry and therapy and I gave information on our early founding fathers of psychology and its progression and new knowledge up until today. Finally I covered some of the more well-known mental illnesses with information on their causes and their symptoms and treatment while adding my own opinions on spirituality and other ideas I have acquired from researching mental illnesses for my television show. Also the knowledge and information I have received from my psychiatrist and therapist and my mental health support groups I have been going to on and off for the last 20 years. Finally I have given you the reader insight into the different ways I have coped with my mental illnesses by always taking my medicine, seeing my doctors and going to church and my NAMI support group. And lastly and the most important part of my recovery is developing a relationship with Jesus Christ who besides being the CREATOR OF THE WORLDS and The Supreme Being has given me a new lease on life and has given me salvation by believing in him for all things and most of all knowing him as A FRIEND WHO STICKS CLOSER THAN A BROTHER. I do hope I have given those who have read this book encouragement and hope if you are dealing with a mental condition or you are caring for a loved one with mental issues. I adhere to everything I have talked about and it has given me a new and happy and productive life and I hope it will do the same for you. Remember as the bible says, Pray without ceasing, Prayer and Love are the two of the most powerful forces in the UNIVERSE besides the name of JESUS. To all my readers I wish you GOD speed and may you find GOD. GOD bless you all WITH MUCH LOVE BOB BIENVENU

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church across North America has struggled to minister effectively with children, teens, and adults with common mental health conditions and their families. One reason for the lack of ministry is the absence of a widely accepted model for mental health outreach and inclusion. In Mental Health and the Church: A Ministry Handbook for Including Children and Adults with ADHD, Anxiety, Mood Disorders, and Other Common Mental Health Conditions, Dr. Stephen Grcevich presents a simple and flexible model for mental health inclusion ministry for implementation by churches of all sizes, denominations, and organizational styles. The model is based upon recognition of seven barriers to church attendance and assimilation resulting from mental illness: stigma, anxiety, self-control, differences in social communication and sensory processing, social isolation and past experiences of church. Seven broad inclusion strategies are presented for helping persons of all ages with common mental health conditions and their families to fully participate in all of the ministries offered by the local church. The book is also designed to be a useful resource for parents, grandparents and spouses interested in promoting the spiritual growth of loved ones with mental illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, the third panel of a triptych dedicated by the author to the notion of illness derived from the patristic and hagiographic texts of the Christian East from the first to the fourteenth centuries, makes an essential contribution to the history of mental illnesses and their therapies in a domain very little studied until now. Confronted by the numerous problems still posed today in understanding these illnesses, their treatment, and their relationship to those who are sick, he shows the importance offered for reflection and current practice by early Christian thought and experience. After indicating how the Fathers understood the psyche and its relationship with body and spirit, the author gives a detailed analysis of the different causes they attribute to mental illness and the various treatments recommended. At the same time he shows how, relying on fundamental Christian values, they manifest a constant solicitude and respect for the sick, and how they are at pains to integrate them into community life and have them participate in their own healing, foreshadowing in this way the needs and aspirations of our own time. The last part discloses the deep significance of one of the strangest and most fascinating forms of asceticism the Christian East has known: 'folly for the sake of Christ', a madness feigned with the goal of attaining a high degree of humility, but also a way well-suited, through a close experience of their condition, to help those who are often among, today as in the past, the most destitute. Jean-Claude Larchet is docteur dès lettres et sciences humaines, docteur en théologie, and docteur d'État en philosophie. The author of Thérapeutique des maladies spirituelles (Paris: Editions de l'Ancre, 1991) and The Theology of Illness (Crestwood, New York: St Vladimir's Seminary Press, 2002), he is a specialist in questions of health, sickness, and healing. He is today one of the foremost St Maximus the Confessor specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People living with mental health challenges are not excluded from God’s love or even the fullness of life promised by Jesus. Unfortunately, this hope is often lost amid the well-meaning labels and medical treatments that dominate the mental health field today. In Finding Jesus in the Storm, John Swinton makes the case for reclaiming that hope by changing the way we talk about mental health and remembering that, above all, people are people, regardless of how unconventionally they experience life. Finding Jesus in the Storm is a call for the church to be an epicenter of compassion for those experiencing depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and related difficulties. That means breaking free of the assumptions that often accompany these diagnoses, allowing for the possibility that people living within unconventional states of mental health might experience God in unique ways that are real and perhaps even revelatory. In each chapter, Swinton gives voice to those experiencing the mental health challenges in question, so readers can see firsthand what God’s healing looks like in a variety of circumstances. The result is a book about people instead of symptoms, description instead of diagnosis, and lifegiving hope for everyone in the midst of the storm.

Many women are given medication to treat the disease, but medication alone does not always address the underlying emotions which trouble the mind and spirit. Counselor Elyse Fitzpatrick and Dr. Laura Hendrickson provide biblical guidance on how to balance medical intervention with biblical encouragement.

This removes all reliance on human effort and frees us to become totally Christ centered. Over four decades ago, a diving accident left Joni a quadriplegic. Today, she faces a new battle: unrelenting pain. The ongoing urgency of this season in her life has caused Joni to return to foundational questions about suffering and God’s will. A Place of Healing is not an ivory-tower treatise on suffering. It’s an intimate look into the life of a mature woman of God. Whether readers are enduring physical pain, financial loss, or relational grief, Joni invites them to process their suffering with her. Together, they will navigate the distance between God’s magnificent yes and heartbreaking no—and find new hope for thriving in-between.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From past traumas to current crises to the healing needed for the daily bumps and bruises of life, we can no longer view our mental health outside of our Christian faith. The story in Luke 17 tells us that after one of the lepers that Jesus healed returned to Him, he was told that his faith has made him whole. This book discusses how we as Christians can be healed and made whole in the area of our emotional and mental health. This book identifies specific steps that can be taken to begin and continue on the path of healing and toward wholeness. It will also examine lessons we can learn from individuals in the Bible who struggled with mental and emotional issues despite their relationship with God. This book seeks to help the reader fight the good fight of faith in the area of mental and emotional health and gives hope that with God, all things truly are possible. In a selfie-driven society that depends on the current culture to determine norms and wellness, this book returns the believer to the foundation of the Christian faith--the Bible and the power of God to do what seems impossible. In these pages is a message of hope that is desperately needed in the lives of individuals during these trying times. Our mental and emotional health are important to God, and it should be important to everyone within the kingdom of God. Our struggles in this area do not represent weakness, but instead, they remind us that in this life, we will have trials and tribulations, yet we have been assured that we have a Savior who has overcome the world, and as we depend on Him for healing, we can be healed and made whole.
