Book Synopsis Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia by : Richard Benjamin
Download or read book Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia written by Richard Benjamin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia is a unique and innovative contribution to the healthcare literature that outlines the trauma-informed approaches necessary to provide a more compassionate model of care for those who suffer with mental illness. The impact of abuse and trauma is frequently overlooked in this population, to the detriment of both individual and society. This work highlights the importance of recognising such a history and responding humanely. The book explores the trauma-informed perspective across four sections. The first outlines theory, constructs and effects of abuse and trauma. The second section addresses the effects of abuse and trauma on specific populations. The third section outlines a diverse range of individual treatment approaches. The final section takes a broader perspective, examining the importance of culture and training as well as the organisation and delivery of services. Written in an accessible style by a diverse group of national and international experts, Humanising Mental Health Care in Australia is an invaluable resource for mental health clinicians, the community managed and primary health sectors, policy makers and researchers, and will be a helpful reference for people who have experienced trauma and those who care for them.

Book Synopsis What Young People Want from Mental Health Services by : Kerry Gibson
Download or read book What Young People Want from Mental Health Services written by Kerry Gibson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young people experience one of the highest rates of mental health problems of any group, but make the least use of the support available to them. To reach young people in distress, we need to understand what this digital generation want from mental health professionals and services. Based on interviews with nearly 400 young people, this book offers a vision of youth mental health issues and services through the eyes of young people themselves. It offers professionals important insights into the meaning of identity and agency for this generation and explores how these issues play out in young people’s expectations of mental health support. It shows how, despite young people’s immersion in digital technology, genuine and trusting relationships remain a key ingredient in their priorities for support. It considers what access to mental health support means for a generation who have grown up with the immediacy enabled by digital technology. Young people’s accounts also provide crucial insights into how they are using digital resources to manage their own mental health – in ways often not appreciated by professionals who design internet interventions. What Young People Want From Mental Health Services offers clear guidance to counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, youth workers, social workers, service providers and policymakers about how to work with youth and design their services so they are a better match for young people today. It contributes to a growing movement calling for a ‘Youth Informed Approach’ to mental health to address the needs of young people.

Book excerpt: This report presents findings from the second Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, conducted with over 6,300 families in 2013-14. The survey - known as Young Minds Matter - aimed to determine the prevalence, nature, and impact of mental health problems and disorders among children and young people, service use, and the role of the education sector in providing mental health services. Surveys were undertaken by the parents of children and young people aged 4-17 years old as well as older children and adolescents themselves. Chapters include: Major depressive disorder; Anxiety disorders; Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; Conduct disorder and oppositional problem behaviours; Service use; Perceived need and barriers to receiving mental health care; The role of schools and impact on education; Mental disorders, self-reported problems and distress; Adolescent reported self-harm and suicidal behaviours; Self-reported problems, behaviours and risk factors in young people; and comparisons with the 1998 survey. The survey found that one in seven young people had a mental health disorder - a similar rate to findings from the previous survey. However, it also found that the types of disorders and the gender and age at which young people are most commonly experiencing them has changed in this time. [Libraries Australia].

Download or read book Youth Mental Health Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explores rates and trends of psychological distress in young Australians, the concerns of young people that may be associated with high levels of psychological distress, and their help seeking behaviour. It draws on five years of data from Mission Australia's annual youth survey of young people aged 15-19 years old. In the latest survey, from 2016, just under one in four young people met the criteria for having a probable serious mental illness - with females and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders particularly at risk. Each survey asks respondents to name their top three concerns - for young people meeting the criteria for a probable serious mental illness, these concerns were coping with stress, school or study problems, and depression. The report concludes with recommendations for health policy and service delivery.
