Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Filled with insights into the social, historical, and economic forces responsible for the overmedicalization of human unhappiness and distress.” —George Graham, Metapsychology In this surprising book, Allan V. Horwitz argues that our current conceptions of mental illness as a disease fit only a small number of serious psychological conditions and that most conditions currently regarded as mental illness are cultural constructions, normal reactions to stressful social circumstances, or simply forms of deviant behavior. “Thought-provoking and important . . . Drawing on and consolidating the ideas of a range of authors, Horwitz challenges the existing use of the term mental illness and the psychiatric ideas and practices on which this usage is based . . . Horwitz enters this controversial territory with confidence, conviction, and clarity.” —Joan Busfield, American Journal of Sociology “Horwitz properly identifies the financial incentives that urge therapists and drug companies to proliferate psychiatric diagnostic categories. He correctly identifies the stranglehold that psychiatric diagnosis has on research funding in mental health. Above all, he provides a sorely needed counterpoint to the most strident advocates of disease-model psychiatry.” —Mark Sullivan, Journal of the American Medical Association “Horwitz makes at least two major contributions to our understanding of mental disorders. First, he eloquently draws on evidence from the biological and social sciences to create a balanced, integrative approach to the study of mental disorders. Second, in accomplishing the first contribution, he provides a fascinating history of the study and treatment of mental disorders . . . from early asylum work to the rise of modern biological psychiatry.”— Debra Umberson, Quarterly Review of Biology

Book excerpt: Everything we have ever experienced has been mediated through the wonder of creation. But where does it all come from, and why do we exist at all? God is eternally creating. Each plant, animal, and thought is an expression of God's being. The second volume of this theology for the HERE and NOW is a meditation on God's creative process. When was the beginning? Why does God create? How does God create? By asking these questions, we discover a God that is both immanent and transcendent. God is creating here and now. All we have to do is look.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What would happen with your life if you discover that you have power over your thoughts? That your reality is influenced by your thoughts. That what you are living is a result of your belief system. How does this knowledge change your daily routine? How would you think after proving that your mind has power over matter and your spirit has power over your mind? This book is about how our beliefs determine our lives. In a general sense, many people understand that. In this book, we will go beyond and develop the idea of how our beliefs actually create our life circumstances. We will leave the subject or thought that we were thrown into this world, and we pick up the thought that we are the ones who create the world we live in and our own reality. The thought that we are able to create our lives just as we want it to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, The Miracle Kit behind the Power of Prayer, offers an analysis of a mystic ancient form of prayer that manipulates subtle cosmic energies through ancient techniques of yoga science and religious rituals that are not understood in today’s materialistic modern science. The mystic prayer technique that this book is advocating uses the spoken word, along with positive imagination and visualization to invoke and harness this power of cosmic energies or pranas. This book goes into detail on the ancient science for manipulating the five major pranas that flow through our subtle bodies and gross physical body. The technique also uses pranayama techniques, an ancient method of breath control that allows man to control the flow of prana that enters and exits the body’s psychic centers (Chakras). The prayer technique also incorporates mudra yoga that assists the “prayer practitioner” in sealing and redirecting pranas so that they can be impregnated with a mind substance that has the purpose and direction of the intended target.

Book excerpt: Modern information communication technology eradicates barriers of geographic distances, making the world globally interdependent, but this spatial globalization has not eliminated cultural fragmentation. The Two Cultures of C.P. Snow (that of science–technology and that of humanities) are drifting apart even faster than before, and they themselves crumble into increasingly specialized domains. Disintegrated knowledge has become subservient to the competition in technological and economic race leading in the direction chosen not by the reason, intellect, and shared value-based judgement, but rather by the whims of autocratic leaders or fashion controlled by marketers for the purposes of political or economic dominance. If we want to restore the authority of our best available knowledge and democratic values in guiding humanity, first we have to reintegrate scattered domains of human knowledge and values and offer an evolving and diverse vision of common reality unified by sound methodology. This collection of articles responds to the call from the journal Philosophies to build a new, networked world of knowledge with domain specialists from different disciplines interacting and connecting with other knowledge-and-values-producing and knowledge-and-values-consuming communities in an inclusive, extended, contemporary natural–philosophic manner. In this process of synthesis, scientific and philosophical investigations enrich each other—with sciences informing philosophies about the best current knowledge of the world, both natural and human-made—while philosophies scrutinize the ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations of sciences, providing scientists with questions and conceptual analyses. This is all directed at extending and deepening our existing comprehension of the world, including ourselves, both as humans and as societies, and humankind.

Book excerpt: "Reckoning with Matter" tells the story of early modern European calculating machines, from the early attempts of Blaise Pascal in the 1640s through Charles Babbage s efforts of the 1820s to 40s. All failed spectacularly. By exploring these failed technologies, Matthew L. Jones tracks diverse forms of technical life different social arrangements of practitioners, different legal conceptions of the ownership of work and ideas, and different philosophical conceptions of knowledge and skill. Philosophers, engineers, and craftspeople wrote about their distinctive competencies, about technical novelty, and about the best way to coordinate their efforts, and drawing on these remarkably well-preserved records, Jones reveals the concrete processes of imagining, elaborating, testing, and building key components for calculating machines. By highlighting the makers and their conceptions of invention right up to the instauration of modern patent regimes and the solidification of the concept of Romantic genius, Jones argues that these conceptions of creativity and of making are often more incisive and more honest than those still dominating our own legal, political, and aesthetic culture. Ultimately, "Reckoning with Matter "uses the fascinating history of calculating machines to explore major contingencies of European early modernity, from its economic history to its vision of creative activity itself."
