Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of Group III (Crystal and Solid State Physics) deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds. The amount of information available in this field is so substantial that several subvolumes are needed to cover it all. The first subvolumes treat the intrinsic magnetic properties, i. e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. So far, subvolumes III/19a, III/19b and III/19c have appeared. Data on the properties that depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films or amorphous alloys and the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, are being compiled in the last subvolumes of III/19. In the first of these, subvolume III/19g, magnetic properties are given for several major types of crystalline and amorphous thin magnetic films that are supported by a substrate and for which a more or less coherent group of data is available. The properties of sputtered metallic amorphous films containing 3d transition elements will be dealt with in the following subvolume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The areas of natural language processing and computational linguistics have continued to grow in recent years, driven by the demand to automatically process text and spoken data. With the processing power and techniques now available, research is scaling up from lab prototypes to real-world, proven applications. This book teaches the principles of natural language processing, first covering practical linguistics issues such as encoding and annotation schemes, defining words, tokens and parts of speech and morphology, as well as key concepts in machine learning, such as entropy, regression and classification, which are used throughout the book. It then details the language-processing functions involved, including part-of-speech tagging using rules and stochastic techniques, using Prolog to write phase-structure grammars, syntactic formalisms and parsing techniques, semantics, predicate logic and lexical semantics and analysis of discourse and applications in dialogue systems. A key feature of the book is the author's hands-on approach throughout, with sample code in Prolog and Perl, extensive exercises, and a detailed introduction to Prolog. The reader is supported with a companion website that contains teaching slides, programs and additional material. The second edition is a complete revision of the techniques exposed in the book to reflect advances in the field the author redesigned or updated all the chapters, added two new ones and considerably expanded the sections on machine-learning techniques.

Book excerpt: This is the proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on Empirical Foundations of Information and Software Sciences (EFISS), which was held in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 19-21, 1988. The purpose of the symposia is to explore subjects and methods of scientific inquiry which are of common interest to information and software sciences, and to identify directions of research that would benefit from the mutual interaction of these two disciplines. The main theme of the sixth symposium was modeling in information and software engineering, with emphasis on methods and tools of modeling. The symposium covered topics such as models of individual and organizational users of information systems, methods of selecting appropriate types of models for a given type of users and a given type of tasks, deriving models from records of system usage, modeling system evolution, constructing user and task models for adaptive systems, and models of system architectures. This symposium was sponsored by the School of Information and Computer Science of the Georgia Institute of Technology and by the U.S. Army Institute for Research in Management Information, Communications, and Computer Sciences (AIRMICS).17le Editors vii CONTENTS 1 I. Book excerpt: Digital preservation is an issue faced by practitioners in Ross Harveythe library and recordkeeping professions, yet most professionalshave little time to keep up with the latest techniquesand standards. This invaluable work provides a single-volume introduction to the principles, strategies and practices currently applied by librarians and recordkeepers to the preservation of digital information and will assist them to make informed decisions about the role of digital information in their care. The book is presented in four parts: Why do we preserve? What do we preserve? How do we preserve? and How do we manage digital preservation? Each part covers the area in detail and addresses current issues in a clear and informative manner. The terminology of the field is explained clearly throughout the book. Each chapter includes a range of case studies from institutionsat the forefront of digital object preservation. An index facilitates quick access. This book will be essential as a professional reference tool for all librarians, recordkeepers and archivists with preservation responsibilities as well as being a definitive source of information for the whole profession including students.

Book excerpt: Information systems are large repositories of factual and inferential knowledge intended to be queried and maintained by a wide variety of users with different backgrounds and work tasks. The community of potential information system users is growing rapidly with advances in hardware and software technology that permit computer/communications support for more and more application areas. Unfortunately, it is often felt that progress in user interface technology has not quite matched that of other areas. Technical solutions such as computer graphics, natural language processing, or man-machine-man communications in office systems are not enough by themselves. They should be complemented by system features that ensure cooperative behavior of the interfaces, thus reducing the training and usage effort required for successful interaction. In analogy to a human dialog partner, we call an interface cooperative if it does not just accept user requests passively or answer them literally, but actively attempts to understand the users' intentions and to help them solve their applica tion problems. This leads to the central question addressed by this book: What makes an information systems interface cooperative, and how do we provide capabilities leading to cooperative interfaces? Many answers are possible. A first aspect concerns the formulation and accep tance of user requests. Many researchers assume that such requests should be formulated in natural language.

It is to be hoped that this kind of variety will contribute – as Petr Sgall strives to do – to a broader and deeper understanding and cooperation between linguists of various backgrounds. The volume contains sections on I. Semiotics and semantics; II. The Sentence and Its Structure; III. Below the Sentence Structure; IV. Topic and Focus; V. Text and Context; VI. Formal and Computational Methods.

Book excerpt: Lately some important scientific innovations have come from dialogues and discussions between human sciences and the more technically oriented fields of research. This especially applies to the border area of linguistics and artificial intelligence research work. The book gives a representative insight into the state-of-the-art. Still there are very few common ideas between linguistic interests and the challenges of artificial intelligence. Nevertheless numerous communications between linguistic, cognitive, psychological approaches and those of the computer sciences, as well as further single aspects come into sight. The contributions deal with problems belonging to the fields of psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, text linguistics and semantics, semantic representation, knowledge representation and knowledge acquisition, unification theory and unification grammar, construction of parsers and grammar theory, natural language processing, speech analysis and text generating systems, machine translation and the differences between man-man and man-machine communication.

This symposium had two objectives: exemplify enduser systems in the context of usability issues and summarize knowledge about human factors, and proper research methods. The second objective is to identify important open questions, and suggest lines of future research to interested scholars.

The volume focusses on the technology for building natural language unter different complementary perspectives. Besides the foundational aspect concerning system architecture, semantics and the role of natural language in multi-modal interfaces questions of a methodology for constructing and evaluating natural language systems are discussed. A number of applicational studies together with an outlook on the expected impact of a "language technology" provides a view on today's practical state of art and on its future impact.
