Book excerpt: You are having what could be diagnosed as an insane experience, but you know, deep down, that it's actually more real than the façade you are trying to maintain to 'fit in' with what society suggests is normal. Are you really the only one, and can you continue to live a lie? When Katie Mottram, a mental health practitioner whose mother suffered from severe depression, found herself having a breakdown, she suddenly realised that the system in which she worked was getting it all wrong. Nobody could have envisioned the miraculous destination to which her distress would lead her. When you've read Katie's story and her amazing insights, you will: * Understand the messages contained in your emotions * Find out what lies beneath your fears * Discover how you have access to everything your soul desires * Realise that your dream life is not out of reach * Gain the confidence to live as your authentic self. As a consequence of her own spiritual crisis, Katie is now a development group member of the UK Spiritual Crisis Network, and is working to gain recognition for this very natural phenomenon within mainstream psychiatry. She is also involved with an innovative mental health pilot study aiming to 'normalise' mental distress and transform policy within the UK and beyond. Katie is based in Norfolk, England, and can be contacted at: twitter.com/SynchronizeYou

Book excerpt: For anyone who has ever longed for God but always felt like his love was just out of reach; for anyone whose messy story has made them feel like a third-string player on God’s team; for anyone whose soul feels beaten, battered, and in desperate need of some healing, C. S. Lewis just may have a remedy. This collection of essays and memoirs, delivered by an author whose fundamentalist upbringing painted a picture of a God who was simply impossible to please, are written for anyone whose has struggled with their spiritual self-worth. After life threw him a few curveballs, he was convinced that the God whose approval he yearned for, simply had no use for him. Lewis helped to changed that. This story about falling back in love with God takes the reader on a three-year journey in which the author digested just about every word Lewis ever wrote, including many of his classics, his lesser-known writings, and even personal letters he wrote to family, friends, fans, and even children. The memoirs will journey to Lewis’s home and favorite pub in Oxford, his office in Cambridge, his church, his gravesite, and more.

This handbook is the first book which identifies what is happening in different regions of the world to provide different countries and client groups with the opportunity to learn from each other. The book is divided into five sections: Section One examines service user involvement in context exploring theoretical issues which underpin service user involvement. In Section Two we focus on the state of service user involvement in human services education and research across the globe including examples of innovative practice, but also identifying examples of where it is not happening and why. Section Three offers more detailed examination of such involvement in a wide range of professional education learning settings. Section Four focuses on the involvement of service users in research involving a wide range of service user groups and situations. Lastly, Section Five explores future challenges for education and research to ensure involvement remains meaningful. The book includes forty-eight chapters, including seventeen case-studies, from all regions of the world, this is the first book to both highlight the subject’s methodological and theoretical issues and give practical examples in education and research for those wishing to engage in this field. It will be of interest to all service users, scholars and students of social work, nursing, occupational therapy, and other human service subjects.

Book excerpt: To become a competent social worker it is essential to know the perspective of the service users. Therefore, service users are more and more included in field research projects and the instruction of social workers to-be. However, they are usually reduced to the role of informants and not actively taking part as co-partners. For the first time, this anthology gives an overview of courses in which service users and students share their experiences and work together on the same level using gapmending methods. The applications and evaluations of these courses in different European countries are discussed in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Philippines, a dramatic increase in labor migration has created a large population of transnational migrant families. Thousands of children now grow up apart from one or both parents, as the parents are forced to work outside the country in order to send their children to school, give them access to quality health care, or, in some cases, just provide them with enough food. While the issue of transnational families has already generated much interest, this book is the first to offer a close look at the lives of the children in these families. Drawing on in-depth interviews with the family members left behind, the author examines two dimensions of the transnational family. First, she looks at the impact of distance on the intergenerational relationships, specifically from the children’s perspective. She then analyzes gender norms in these families, both their reifications and transgressions in transnational households. Acknowledging that geographical separation unavoidably strains family intimacy, Parreñas argues that the maintenance of traditional gender ideologies exacerbates and sometimes even creates the tensions that plague many Filipino migrant families.
