Book Synopsis The Passions and the Interests by : Albert O. Hirschman
Download or read book The Passions and the Interests written by Albert O. Hirschman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Albert Hirschman reconstructs the intellectual climate of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to illuminate the intricate ideological transformation that occurred, wherein the pursuit of material interests--so long condemned as the deadly sin of avarice--was assigned the role of containing the unruly and destructive passions of man. Hirschman here offers a new interpretation for the rise of capitalism, one that emphasizes the continuities between old and new, in contrast to the assumption of a sharp break that is a common feature of both Marxian and Weberian thinking. Among the insights presented here is the ironical finding that capitalism was originally supposed to accomplish exactly what was soon denounced as its worst feature: the repression of the passions in favor of the "harmless," if one-dimensional, interests of commercial life. To portray this lengthy ideological change as an endogenous process, Hirschman draws on the writings of a large number of thinkers, including Montesquieu, Sir James Steuart, and Adam Smith. Featuring a new afterword by Jeremy Adelman and a foreword by Amartya Sen, this Princeton Classics edition of The Passions and the Interests sheds light on the intricate ideological transformation from which capitalism emerged triumphant, and reaffirms Hirschman's stature as one of our most influential and provocative thinkers. Book Synopsis Philosophy as Passion by : Karen Vintges
Download or read book Philosophy as Passion written by Karen Vintges and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy as Passion refutes the commonly held view of Simone de Beauvoir as no more than an acolyte of Jean-Paul Sartre. Karen Vintges delineates Beauvoir's independent, original ethics and philosophy, drawing on the moral-philosophical treatises of the 1940s and '50s, The Second Sex, The Mandarins, and her autobiographical works. Vintges shows that Beauvoir's unique notions added an ethical dimension to existentialist philosophy. Drawing on Foucault's concept of ethics as an "art of living," Vintges shows how Beauvoir developed an individual ethic as an intellectual woman. Philosophy as Passion illustrates how closely Beauvoir's life and work were intertwined--how she lived her philosophy and philosophized her life.

Download or read book Love as Passion written by Niklas Luhmann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book Niklas Luhmann - one of the leading social thinkers of the late 20th century - analyses the emergence of ‘love' as the basis of personal relationships in modern societies. He argues that, while family systems remained intact in the transition from traditional to modern societies, a semantics for love developed to accommodate extra-marital relationships; this semantics was then transferred back into marriage and eventually transformed marriage itself. Drawing on a diverse range of historical and literary sources, Luhmann retraces the emergence and evolution of the special semantics of passionate love that has come to form the basis of modern forms of intimacy and personal relationships. This classic book by Luhmann has been widely recognized as a work of major importance. It is an outstanding contribution to social theory and it provides an original and illuminating perspective on the nature of modern marriage and sexuality.

Book Synopsis An Incompatible Passion by : Nigel Patten
Download or read book An Incompatible Passion written by Nigel Patten and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Incompatible Passion tells the dramatized history of the last three months in the life of the controversial poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. In the spring of 1822, Percy and his second wife, Mary Woolstonecroft, the author of the famous novel Frankenstein, along with her half-sister, Claire, rented a villa on the Tuscan coast. They were joined there by Jane and Edward Williams, and later the Cornish adventurer Edward Trelawny. The relationship between Mary and her husband soured after two of their three children died young. Both Mary and Claire shared Percy's affections, which caused tremendous friction, as the poet had a tendency to pursue pretty women. Claire had given birth to illegitimate daughters by both Shelley and Lord Byron, so living together in the same house was not easy for Mary. Trelawny persuaded a friend to construct a yacht for the poet, and while sailing one day with Edward Williams, a sudden squall capsized the boat and both men drowned. The remains of Shelley's body were cremated on the beach in the presence of Byron and Trelawny.

Book Synopsis The Dangerous Passion by : David M. Buss
Download or read book The Dangerous Passion written by David M. Buss and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000-02-14 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do men and women cheat on each other? How do men really feel when their partners have sex with other men? What worries women more -- men who turn to other women for love or men who simply want sexual variety in their lives? Can the jealousy husbands and wives experience over real or imagined infidelities be cured? Should it be? In this surprising and engaging exploration of men's and women's darker passions, David Buss, acclaimed author of The Evolution of Desire, reveals that both men and women are actually designed for jealousy. Drawing on experiments, surveys, and interviews conducted in thirty-seven countries on six continents, as well as insights from recent discoveries in biology, anthropology, and psychology, Buss discovers that the evolutionary origins of our sexual desires still shape our passions today. According to Buss, more men than women want to have sex with multiple partners. Furthermore, women who cheat on their husbands do so when they are most likely to conceive, but have sex with their spouses when they are least likely to conceive. These findings show that evolutionary tendencies to acquire better genes through different partners still lurk beneath modern sexual behavior. To counteract these desires to stray -- and to strengthen the bonds between partners -- jealousy evolved as an early detection system of infidelity in the ancient and mysterious ritual of mating. Buss takes us on a fascinating journey through many cultures, from pre-historic to the present, to show the profound evolutionary effect jealousy has had on all of us. Only with a healthy balance of jealousy and trust can we be certain of a mate's commitment, devotion, and true love.
