Book Synopsis Foundry Microfabrication of Deformable Mirrors for Adaptive Optics by : William D. Cowan
Download or read book Foundry Microfabrication of Deformable Mirrors for Adaptive Optics written by William D. Cowan and published by . This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is a rapidly emerging field of research in which batch fabrication processes are used to construct miniature devices. MEMS devices are particularly well suited to optical applications. Foundry microfabrication offers a substantial cost advantage for prototype system development. In this research, foundry MEMS processes are used to fabricate low-cost deformable mirror systems (MEM-DMs) for adaptive optics. The challenges and design trades associated with fabrication of continuous and segmented deformable mirrors in foundry processes are examined in detail. Micromirror surface figure is shown to be critically important. Beam steering and optical aberration correction experiments conclusively demonstrate the potential of low-cost MEM-DMs. The prototype MEM-DM systems are approximately 1/ 500th the cost of conventionally manufactured deformable mirrors. An innovative direct digital control scheme further reduces adaptive optic system cost by eliminating the digital to analog converter typically required for each controlled element. In addition to the MEM-DMs, other MEMS devices are shown. The thermally actuated piston micromirrors offer greater deflections for operation at longer optical wavelengths. Other MEMS devices examined include a series of tilting mirrors, pressure gauges, test structures, electrostatic scratch drive actuated rotors, and a new type of electrostatic cantilever motor with lateral motion output.

Book Synopsis Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction with a Mems Micro-Mirror Device by : Shaun Roger Hick
Download or read book Demonstrating Optical Aberration Correction with a Mems Micro-Mirror Device written by Shaun Roger Hick and published by . This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research conducted the first demonstrated use of a micro- electro-mechanical structure (MEMS) mirror array to correct a static optical aberration. A well developed technique in adaptive optics imaging systems uses a deformable mirror to reflect the incident wave front to the imaging stage of the system. By matching the surface of the deformable mirror to the shape of the wave front phase distortion, the reflected wave front will be less aberrated before it is imaged. Typical adaptive optics systems use piezo-electric actuated deformable mirrors. This research used an electrostatically actuated, segmented mirror array, constructed by standard MEMS fabrication techniques, to investigate its performance as a deformable mirror. The relatively cheap cost of MEMS fabrication promises new adaptive optics applications if a suitable design can be found. In the demonstration, the point spread function (PSF) of the corrected and uncorrected aberrated image were compared. A 43 percent improvement in the peak intensity of the PSF was noted in the corrected image.
Download or read book MOEMS written by M. Edward Motamedi and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the exciting and fast-moving field of MOEMS to graduate students, scientists, and engineers by providing a foundation of both micro-optics and MEMS that will enable them to conduct future research in the field. Born from the relatively new fields of MEMS and micro-optics, MOEMS are proving to be an attractive and low-cost solution to a range of device problems requiring high optical functionality and high optical performance. MOEMS solutions include optical devices for telecommunication, sensing, and mobile systems such as v-grooves, gratings, shutters, scanners, filters, micromirrors, switches, alignment aids, lens arrays, and hermetic wafer-scale optical packaging. An international team of leading researchers contributed to this book, and it presents examples and problems employing cutting-edge MOEM devices. It will inspire researchers to further advance the design, fabrication, and analysis of MOEM systems.
Book Synopsis Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine by : Gordon D. Love
Download or read book Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine written by Gordon D. Love and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains state-of-the-art research papers on adaptive optics used outside the usual astronomical and military applications. It is the first book to cover this new area of research. One of the main industrial applications is in the control of laser wavefronts, and the book contains papers on both intra- and extra-laser cavity correction. The measurement and control of ocular aberrations is the major medical application, and the topics are discussed by leading researchers in the field. Papers on adaptive optics components specifically for non-astronomical systems are also presented. Other topics include laser communications, microscopy and low-cost systems.
Book Synopsis MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications by : Robert Osiander
Download or read book MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications written by Robert Osiander and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of MEMS for aerospace applications has been germinating for years, and current advances bring the field to the very cusp of fruition. Reliability is chief among the challenges limiting the deployment of MEMS technologies in space, as the requirement of zero failure during the mission is quite stringent for this burgeoning field. MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications provides all the necessary tools to overcome these obstacles and take MEMS from the lab bench to beyond the exosphere. The book begins with an overview of MEMS development and provides several demonstrations of past and current examples of MEMS in space. From this platform, the discussion builds to fabrication technologies; the effect of space environmental factors on MEMS devices; and micro technologies for space systems, instrumentation, communications, thermal control, guidance navigation and control, and propulsion. Subsequent chapters explore factors common to all of the described systems, such as MEMS packaging, handling and contamination control, material selection for specific applications, reliability practices for design and application, and assurance practices. Edited and contributed by an outstanding team of leading experts from industry, academia, and national laboratories, MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications illuminates the path toward qualifying and integrating MEMS devices and instruments into future space missions and developing innovative satellite systems.
