Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.

Book excerpt: Can a long-forgotten memory of a horrible event suddenly resurface years later? How can we know whether a memory is true or false? Seven spellbinding cases shed light on why it is rare for a reclaimed memory to be wholly false. Here are unforgettable true stories of what happens when people remember what they've tried to forget -- plus one case of genuine false memory. In the best detective-story fashion, using her insights as a psychiatrist and the latest research on the mind and the brain, Lenore Terr helps us separate truth from fiction.

We never used to run to our mother, to kiss or cling about her - very far indeed, at an im measurable distance, was such a, thought from us. She was a handsome lady, dressed in rust ling silks, 'who used to come sometimes into our nursery, sit down, talk to us for a While. And thus, as in memory's bark we shall glide To visit the scenes of our boyhood anew, Though oft we may see, looking down on the tide, The wreck of full many a hope shining through: Yet still, as in fancy we point to the flowers, That once made a garden of all the gay shore, Deceiv'd for the moment, we will still think them ours And breathe the fresh air of life's morning once more Anon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Memories, or Echoes of a Mother's Voice I would be a little more charitable in my way of speak ing if I. Were you, Alice, replied Edith, shortly; I'm sure you never heard mamma call Mrs. Graham either vain or worldly. N said Alice, I never did, and I dare say I ought not to have said so, only I have such a bad way of saying what I think, without stopping to ask whether I ought to say it or not; and do you know, Edith, I don't think papa likes our being so much with Mrs. Graham, and I believe one reason why he sends us away is, that now dear mamma is not with us to take care of us, he cannot prevent our sometimes being with people he does not quite like, if we remain with him in the regiment. Book excerpt: Bringing together a diverse range of writers, The Science of Story is the first book to ask the question: what can contemporary brain science teach us about the art and craft of creative nonfiction writing? Drawing on the latest developments in cognitive neuroscience the book sheds new light on some of the most important elements of the writer's craft, from perspective and truth to emotion and metaphor. The Science of Story explores such questions as: · Why do humans tell stories? · How do we remember and misremember our lives - and what does this mean for storytelling? · What is the value of writing about trauma? · How do stories make us laugh, or cry, make us angry or triumphant? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral history is inherently about memory, and when oral history interviews are used "in public," they invariably both reflect and shape public memories of the past. Oral History and Public Memories is the only book that explores this relationship, in fourteen case studies of oral history's use in a variety of venues and media around the world. Readers will learn, for example, of oral history based efforts to reclaim community memory in post-apartheid Cape Town, South Africa; of the role of personal testimony in changing public understanding of Japanese American history in the American West; of oral history's value in mapping heritage sites important to Australia's Aboriginal population; and of the way an oral history project with homeless people in Cleveland, Ohio became a tool for popular education. Taken together, these original essays link the well established practice of oral history to the burgeoning field of memory studies.
