Book excerpt: Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as the genealogist's bible."" The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find. ""

Download or read book The Society of the Cincinnati written by Markus Hünemörder and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1783, the officers of the Continental Army created the Society of the Cincinnati. This veterans' organization was to preserve the memory of the revolutionary struggle and pursue the officers' common interest in outstanding pay and pensions. Henry Knox and Frederick Steuben were the society's chief organizers; George Washington himself served as president. Soon, a nationally distributed South Carolina pamphlet accused the Society of treachery; it would lead to the creation of a hereditary nobility in the United States and subvert republicanism into aristocracy; it was a secret government, a puppet of the French monarchy; its charitable fund would be used for bribes. These were only some of the accusations made against the Society. These were, however, unjustified. The author of this book explores why a part of the revolutionary leadership accused another of subversion in the difficult 1780s, and how the political culture of this period predisposed many leading Americans to think of the Cincinnati as a conspiracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolutionary War was nearing its end in early 1783. In his Hudson Highlands stronghold, General Washington kept a wary eye on the British force in New York City, 60 miles away. His army, owed months of back pay, and his officers frustrated by the negotiations over their promised pension, chafed under martial authority. A nationalist faction in Congress seized upon this discontent to instigate the Newburgh Conspiracy, a plot by Continental Army officers to menace civil officials who opposed the Impost, a 5% tax on imports to be collected by the central government, to satisfy the nation's debts. The army--by this time a formidable force of seasoned veterans--was provoked into threatening the very liberties it had fought to defend. This book examines this last major crisis of the Revolution, when Washington stood between his men and the American people.

Download or read book Journal of the Indian Wars Volume 1, Number 2 written by Michael Hughes and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journal of the Indian Wars, or JIW was a quarterly publication on the study of the American Indian Wars. Before JIW, no periodical dedicated exclusively to this fascinating topic was available. JIW's focus was on warfare in the United States, Canada, and the Spanish borderlands from 1492 to 1890. Published articles also include personalities, policy, and military technologies. JIW was designed to satisfy both professional and lay readers with original articles of lasting value and a variety of columns of interest, plus book reviews, all enhanced with maps and illustrations. JIW's lengthy essays of substance are presented in a fresh and entertaining manner. This issue is dedicated to battles and leaders of the early United States east of the Mississippi River. Eastern battles remain the most obscure in the history of the Indian conflicts, and those fought in the "Old Southeast" are the most obscure of all. This issue includes the following topics: Editor's Forward Prelude to Horseshoe's Bend: The Battles of Emuckfaw and Enotochopco "The Carnage was Dreadful": The Battle of Horseshoe Bend The Blackhawk War Reconsidered: A New Interpretation of its Causes and Consequences William Clark's Journal of Maj. Gen. Anthony's Wayne's 1794 Campaign Against the Indians in Ohio "'Fighting the Flames of a Merciless War': Secretary of War Henry Knox and the Indian War in the Old Northwest," 1790-1795 The Battle of Fallen Timbers: An Historical Perspective Interview: A Conversation with Archaeologist G. Michael Pratt Captain Albert Barnitz and the Battle of the Washita: New Documents, New Insights Features: The Tippacanoe Battlefield and Museum The Indian Wars: Organizational, Tribal, and Museum News Thomas Online: A Beginner's Guide to Indian Wars Research on the Web Book Reviews Index

Book Synopsis Observations on the Real Rights of Women and Other Writings by : Hannah Mather Crocker
Download or read book Observations on the Real Rights of Women and Other Writings written by Hannah Mather Crocker and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following in the path of her distinguished Puritan forebears, Hannah Mather Crocker used her skills as a writer primarily to persuade. Unlike those forebears, however, she did not begin her career as a published writer until well into middle age, after the death of her husband, Joseph Crocker, and after having raised ten children. The works collected here include previously unpublished poetry, drama, memoirs, sermons, and essays on American identity, education, and history, as well as the three texts published in her lifetime. This volume is named for her most famous work, Observations on the Real Rights of Women. Originally published in 1818, it is widely considered the first published treatise on women?s rights written by an American woman and serves as a rare example of women?s views of their own roles within the early American republic. This collection also mirrors the many changes that occurred in the United States during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, highlighting the shift in attitude toward women?s rights, education, and other reform movements as well as the American Revolution. Crocker?s writing provides a rare and valuable window into the concerns of women who embodied Enlightenment ideals during the years of the early republic.
