B The first edition of this Memoir was compiled in a very few weeks, amid other avocations, and while attending the sick bed of my father, who died shortly before its completion; and owing to this want of preparation, as well as to the difficulty of obtaining materials after the lapse or so many years, and at so great a distance from the scene of Sir Isaac Brock's principal labours, I candidly confess that it did not satisfy my own mind. But its publication having happily drawn forth much valuable matter, which in a few years would otherwise have been lost, it will be seen, from a very cursory perusal of this volume, that it is a great improvement on its predecessor, as several errors, topographical and others, arising from the cause just mentioned, have been corrected - many additional letters from Sir Isaac Brock are introduced, while a few others to him of little interest are omitted - and some new and graphic anecdotes and incidents are interwoven in the course of the narrative. Part of the new matter may, however, appear to the general reader as uninteresting and superfluous; but, conceiving that every detail, relating to the progress of a colony from its infant state, possesses a local and statistical value, I have thought such data worthy of being preserved. Those who have had any experience in househunting know well how many houses which are advertised as ' beautiful, ' 'commodious, ' ' highly desirable, ' or 'charming and enchanting residences' prove upon inspection to be ludicrously unlike these descriptions. Freeman made an article upon the subject about this time in the Saturday Review, a journal in which during the next twenty-two years he gave expression week by week to his thoughts and feelings on a vast variety of subjects. 'The grammar of advertisements, ' he said, 'is perhaps more pitiful than that of any other kind of human composition, unless it be that of addresses on public occasions and of the answers returned to them.' But sins of style were light matters. The chief grievance was that the veracity of an advertisement was about on a level with the veracity of an epitaph. Some child or childlike person, who had looked at all the memorial tablets in a church, once asked where the bad people were buried. So one might ask where the undesirable houses were situated, and the estates which were not attractive. It was too bad when a man was sent to view 'one of the most delightful estates in the western part of the kingdom ' to find a rather mean little house by the roadside. Or when one was told that a house was 'beautifully situated in its own grounds' (and who would expect to find it...
