Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Nottinghamshire The present editor has tried to choose his subjects from a field as varied as possible, and he ventures to think that papers will be found here which will be welcome both on account of the matter to be found in them and because of the novelty of the subject. Nor must it be thought for a moment that the choice of interesting subjects is by any means exhausted. Enough material could easily be found to fill a second and perhaps even a third volume. It only remains for the editor to thank all who by their contributions, helpful advice, and encouragement have made the task of compiling this small tribute to the memory of a great county a pleasure. It is to produce books which, while they do not assume to be detailed historical records of any one county, shall gather together the principal episodes of a county's history, and afford prominence to some of its outstanding characteristics and features. Thus in the present volume, dealing with a part of our land which, by reason of its geographical position, was necessarily the scene of frequent and exciting struggles for supremacy between Briton and Roman, considerable space has been devoted to the fascinating record of those far-off days. Again, the almost unique association of Essex with the Royal Forests of England, of which small fragments now remain, renders such a study of the Forest Records as Dr. Cox contributes of especial interest. And so, too, in regard to such widely different subjects as the Religious Houses of the county and the Monumental Brasses which are still contained within its churches, Essex, with few exceptions, stands at the head of all other counties. In common with other counties, Essex. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Northamptonshire Northamptonshire is so rich in interest, both historically and architecturally, that it has been thought that another book, which does not encroach upon the provinces of the county history or guide-book, but which seeks to illustrate certain objects of interest and historic association, would not be out of place. In considering the subjects, I thought that many people would like to have some of my father's notes on the county. I had intended to include a few that were unpublished, but on further consideration I found they were so incomplete that instead I have reprinted some that were only accessible to a limited number in the pages of the Architectural Societies' Reports. I have endeavoured, by cutting these down, to bring them to a level of more general interest, without impairing the value of the contribution. My thanks are due to all those who have helped with illustrations, but especially to the Writers who have so kindly contributed chapters; also to Mr. J. A. Gotch, Mr. C. A. Markham, Father Gerard, S.J., Mr. Henry Ellis, and others, who have helped me with various notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Cheshire But wide as the range is, it is manifestly impossible in a volume of this size to cover the whole ground. It does not profess to be a complete history, or to give all those memories of the past which ought to be of interest to those of the present day. Perhaps no county is richer in these treasures than the county of Chester, and every corner of it has its own special ones. The city of Chester gives its title to the heir to the Crown, as the Prince of Wales is always Earl of Chester; and that fact in itself gives a dignity and importance to both city and county. Then, as will be pointed out in some of the papers which follow, as a County Palatine, Cheshire had privileges and rights of a peculiar character, and all this has made the task of selection of subjects to be treated of more difficult, and the reader will doubtless sympathise with the Editors, even though he may not altogether approve of the result of their labours, and may lament certain omissions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials to Serve for a History of the Parish of St. Mary, Rotherhithe: In the Country of Surrey and in the Administrative County of London No such History has ever yet been written, although naturally the great Histories of London devote some space to the Parishes which lie outside the limits of the Cities of London and Westminster. Every Rector of an ancient English Parish owes a debt to his Parish to preserve its memorials from being forgotten, and I hereby endeavour to discharge my debt to Rotherhithe. I could not have discharged it in any satisfactory degree, had I not availed myself of the help of many friends, which I hereby gratefully acknowledge. Besides drawing on the ordinary sources of information which are open to all in the great Histories of the County of Surrey and of London, I have invoked the kind assistance of many friends whose personal recollections of by-gone days are incorporated in the following pages; and of these I now gratefully mention, first and foremost, my old Cambridge friend, Dr Bonney, whose chapter on the Geology of the Thames Valley is a most valuable contribution to the pre-historic era of our ancient Parish; next the Reverend Prebendary Wm. Hutchinson, Vicar of Blurton, near stoke-on-trent, who was from 1836 to 1850 the friend and colleague of the Reverend Edward Blick, when he began his great work of Church-building and School-building in Rotherhithe; Mr F. C. Carr-gomm, who has kindly placed at my disposal his interesting volumes on the Manor of Rotherhithe, and on the earlier years of the life of field-marshal Sir Wm. Maynard Gomm, the Reverend Dr Atkinson, Master of Clare College, for valuable extracts from the College records; and Mr Hector Munro Chadwick, Fellow of Clare, for revising the anglo-saxon derivation of the name Rother hithe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Old Buckinghamshire Buckinghamshire has many charms for the Antiquary and the Historian. Few other counties contain more historic seats, or can boast of a longer list of distinguished sons who have left their mark on the pages of our country's annals. Statesmen, poets, patriots, heroes of the sword and of the pen, have made their home amid the hills and dales of this delightful county; and many great events in the history of England have taken place upon its soil. It has been the aim of the authors of these "Memorials" to record the chief objects of interest connected with the county, although they are conscious that they have by no means exhausted the rich stores of historical treasure which Buckinghamshire affords. The Editor desires to express his gratitude to the writers who have so kindly co-operated with him in the preparation of this volume. One gentleman, the representative of one of the oldest families in Buckinghamshire, the Rev. Randolph Pigott, has been called away from earth since his brief chapters on the history of the county which he loved were written. His last composition will have a pathetic interest for his many friends. To the other authors who have contributed to this volume the Editor begs to offer his most grateful thanks, and he trusts that their labours will meet with the approbation of all who reverence antiquity and love the traditions and historical associations of Old Buckinghamshire. All we can say is that the original holding had been a juger of 13 acres with a rent of 15d. And an Obligation of two works a week for forty-eight weeks throughout the year, in all ninety-six works, many Of which might be worked out in various occasional services. By 1411, and probably long before that time, these regular services had altogether ceased, and had made way for the few occasional services mentioned in the list Of that date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recipes and historical trivia included, “this spirited guide is as bracing as that classic combination of rye whiskey, sugar, bitters and orange zest” (Tucson Citizen). American tavern owners caused a sensation in the late eighteenth century when they mixed sugar, water, bitters, and whiskey and served the drink with rooster feather stirrers. The modern version of this “original cocktail,” widely known as the Old Fashioned, is a standard in any bartender’s repertoire and holds the distinction of being the only mixed drink ever to rival the Martini in popularity. In The Old Fashioned, Gourmand Award-winning author Albert W. A. Schmid profiles the many people and places that have contributed to the drink’s legend since its origin. This satisfying book explores the history of the Old Fashioned through its ingredients and accessories—a rocks glass, rye whiskey or bourbon, sugar, bitters, and orange zest to garnish—and details the cocktail’s surprising influence on the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and the Broadway musical scene, as well as its curious connection to the SAT college entrance exam. Schmid also considers the impact of various bourbons on the taste of the drink and reviews the timeless debate about whether to muddle. This entertaining and refreshing read, featuring a handpicked selection of recipes along with delicious details about the particularities that arose with each new variation, is perfect for anyone with a passion for mixology or bourbon.
