Book Synopsis Journey to the United States of North America / Viaje a los Estados Unidos del Norte de Am?rica by : Lorenzo de Zavala
Download or read book Journey to the United States of North America / Viaje a los Estados Unidos del Norte de Am?rica written by Lorenzo de Zavala and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Paris in 1834, Journey to the United States of America / Viaje a los Estados Unidos del Norte América, by Lorenzo de Zavala, is an elegantly written travel narrative that maps de Zavala's journey through the United States during his exile from Mexico in 1830. Embracing U.S., Texas, and Mexican history; early ethnography; geography; and political philosophy, de Zavala outlines the cultural and political institutions of Jacksonian America and post-independence Mexico. de Zavala's commentary rivals Alex de Tocqueville's classic travel narrative, Democracy in America, which was published in Paris one year after de Zavala's. The narrative presents the first account of U.S. political culture from a Mexican point of view and constructs the first comparative political and historical framework for the relationship between Mexico and the United States. In passionate prose, de Zavala argues for the incorporation of the true democratic ideals of the enlightenment in the fledgling Republic of Texas. He hoped Texas would meld the best of both Mexican and American cultures. de Zavala believed that if his colleagues who helped frame the Texas Constitution understood the complexities of democracy and the ideals that their state could achieve through a liberal, federal government that gave equal rights to all of its constituents: Native Americans, Mexicans, Euro-Americans, and free African Americans. The original text is accompanied by eight pages of maps and historical photos, John-Michael Rivera's critical introduction, and an English translation based upon Wallace Woolsey's deft translation, expanded and revised for the purposes of this volume.

Book Synopsis Multiple Experiences of Modernity by : Oliver Kozlarek
Download or read book Multiple Experiences of Modernity written by Oliver Kozlarek and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary theories of modernity recognize the plurality or "multiplicity" of modernities. Often the differences are seen as institutional or cultural differences. Although this sort of research is important it cannot be ignored that it does not provide a clear understanding of the "human consequences". The tradition that today is known under the name of Critical Theory, on the contrary, has been interested always first of all in the human consequences. This book wants to follow this ambition. The question it tries to search answers for is: what are the experiences that human beings are making in and within global modernity? Another question is important: what are the affinities and what are the differences. Also Critical Theory was mainly interested in the Western experiences with and within global modernity. The book will challenge this limited view by looking how modernities is experienced in other parts of the world.

Book Synopsis Los ESTRAFALARIOS VIAJES EN EL TIEMPO de WARBLE McGORKLE by : Blackbird Crow Raven

This book was released on 2012-03-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Assimilation/generation/resurrection by : Ben A. Heller
Download or read book Assimilation/generation/resurrection written by Ben A. Heller and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cuban author Jose Lezama Lima (1910-76) produced some of the most enigmatic and important poetry in the Spanish language. He did this during a turbulent moment in Cuban history - a period of social unrest, radical change in political systems, and attempts at cultural self-definition. While some have argued that his poetry evades these circumstances, Assimilation/Generation/Resurrection adopts a contextual approach and reveals the extent of Lezama's engagement with the defining political and cultural issues of his day. It also lays bare the underlying connection of this poetry to a weave of intertexts - Lezama's productive interaction with several traditions." "Intimidating in its philosophical scope and linguistic complexity, Lezama's poetry has received far less critical attention than his prose. The present study rectifies this critical imbalance, foregrounding the poetry while discussing three issues that link disparate areas of Lezama's literary production. These issues - cultural assimilation, generation, and resurrection - are central elements in Lezama's poetics, yet are also pertinent to wide-ranging debates on Latin American cultural identity. This study reads key poems from each of his published books of poetry, using an interpretive approach forged from diverse yet cohering sources, including Lezama's own theories on reading and writing." "After a brief methodological excursus and a first contextualization of Lezama's poetics vis-a-vis a number of other Cuban writers, this study considers Lezama's early assimilation of a number of initiatory texts as well as his indirect but crucial response to the social concerns of the 1930s." "Assimilation/Generation/Resurrection makes clear that Lezama's poetry owes its existence to an engagement with cultural artifacts and social circumstances more generally. Yet it is far more than a response. It constantly attempts to go beyond, generating the new at the intersection of the old and the as-yet uncreated. The result of this practice is a poetry that claims the power both to translate over distance and to resurrect by virtue of the image."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Un agente en Hollywood le cambió el nombre, Edythe Marreenner, a Susan Hayward, porque Hayward era lo que consideraba más cercano al apellido de la famosa estrella Rita Hayworth.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of State-Sponsored History After 1945 by : Berber Bevernage
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of State-Sponsored History After 1945 written by Berber Bevernage and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides the first systematic integrated analysis of the role that states or state actors play in the construction of history and public memory after 1945. The book focuses on many different forms of state-sponsored history, including memory laws, monuments and memorials, state-archives, science policies, history in schools, truth commissions, historical expert commissions, the use of history in courts and tribunals etc. The handbook contributes to the study of history and public memory by combining elements of state-focused research in separate fields of study. By looking at the state’s memorialising capacities the book introduces an analytical perspective that is not often found in classical studies of the state. The handbook has a broad geographical focus and analyses cases from different regions around the world. The volume mainly tackles democratic contexts, although dictatorial regimes are not excluded.
