Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between the Wars saw rapid and far-reaching changes to the character and distribution of the world’s trade. Governments of the world attempted to mould and control their own economies, and economic nationalism grew to unseen levels. This book, first published in 1938, is the comprehensive examination of the European tariffs of the time, and it traces their effects upon the actual course of trade, and in so doing, is one of the few factual studies on the reality of tariffs.

Book Synopsis The Economic History of Central, East and South-East Europe by : Matthias Morys
Download or read book The Economic History of Central, East and South-East Europe written by Matthias Morys and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism in Central, East and South-East Europe (CESEE) led to great hopes for the region and for Europe. A quarter of a century on, the picture is mixed: in many CESEE countries, the transformation process is incomplete, and the economic catch-up has taken longer than anticipated. The current situation has highlighted the need for a better understanding of the long-term political and economic implications of the Central, East and South-East European historical experience. This thematically organised text offers a clear and comprehensive guide to the economic history of CESEE from 1800 to the present day. Bringing together authors from both East and West, the book also draws on the cutting-edge research of a new generation of scholars from the CESEE region. Presenting a thoroughly modern overview of the history of the region, the text will be invaluable to students of economic history and CESEE area studies.

Book Synopsis Social Construction and the Logic of Money by : J. Samuel Barkin
Download or read book Social Construction and the Logic of Money written by J. Samuel Barkin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While other studies of international leadership have looked at a variety of measures to predict behavior, this book demonstrates that the key factor is international finance. J. Samuel Barkin uses an innovative blend of rationalist and constructivist methodologies, approaches to international political economy that normally exist in isolation from one another. Barkin argues that the level of a country's involvement in international finance specifically motivates it to lead. This is particularly relevant today, given the on-going discussions on how to respond to local and global financial crises. Barkin illustrates his theory with an episodic history of international monetary leadership over the last four centuries: Dutch leadership in the seventeenth century; British leadership in the nineteenth; the failure of leadership in the interwar era and Great Depression; and the role of the U.S. in the construction of an international economic infrastructure since World War II.

Book Synopsis What’s In a Name? That Which We Call Capital Controls by : Mr.Atish R. Ghosh
Download or read book What’s In a Name? That Which We Call Capital Controls written by Mr.Atish R. Ghosh and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates why controls on capital inflows have a bad name, and evoke such visceral opposition, by tracing how capital controls have been used and perceived, since the late nineteenth century. While advanced countries often employed capital controls to tame speculative inflows during the last century, we conjecture that several factors undermined their subsequent use as prudential tools. First, it appears that inflow controls became inextricably linked with outflow controls. The latter have typically been more pervasive, more stringent, and more linked to autocratic regimes, failed macroeconomic policies, and financial crisis—inflow controls are thus damned by this “guilt by association.” Second, capital account restrictions often tend to be associated with current account restrictions. As countries aspired to achieve greater trade integration, capital controls came to be viewed as incompatible with free trade. Third, as policy activism of the 1970s gave way to the free market ideology of the 1980s and 1990s, the use of capital controls, even on inflows and for prudential purposes, fell into disrepute.
